Our trip to wonderful Spain is wrapping up. We took our last stroll down the Ramblas this evening and head to the airport early in the mornking for the long flight home. Barcelona is a wonderful, crowded city that is easy to navigate-whether by subway, bus or on foot. Over the weekend it seemed the entire population was out strolling around, enjoying the sights, watching other people and just enjoying life. On Saturday we strolled the entire length of the Ramblas. There were bird markets, flower vendors, a wonderful huge open food market, street artists of every imaginable type and TONS of people. We went to the Picasso Museum. Most of the works were from his early period, but there was a great series of works from his later period. The later works were his interpetations ... read more

We have spent two great days in Granada. Pat and Denise have enjoyed shopping in the bazaar area, faintly reminiscent of the Khan al Kahlil. Today we spent 4 hours at the Alhambra, a thoroughly magnificent moorish palace. The gardens were simply spectacular. The mosaic tiles and carvings were as intricate as they are beautiful. I hope our pictures will be able to capture some of the grandeur we saw today. Warning: I have taken about 1000 pictures so be prepared! Granada is a very relaxed city with friendly people and more good food. Great town for people watching, too. Tomorrow we fly to Barcelona-the last step in or Spanish adventure. ... read more

Another wonderful day of biking through olive groves and white villages. We did about 23 miles and only 900 feet of climbing so the day was much easier on the legs. We had a wonderful organic lunch at a local agriturismo and then pedaled up the mountain to Zuheros. We toured the remains of a Moorish castle that had been built in 700 AD. The views across the valleys to the surrounding mountains showed a sea of olive trees, an almost incomprehenible number of trees. We returned to our hotel for a little siesta, followed by wine tasting led by a local organinc vintner and then another great meal. Sadly, we are done with the cycling portion of our trip and must go our separate ways from our new cycling buddies. We exchanged email addresses so ... read more

Greetings from Zuheros , a white hill town in Andalucia. Tough day on the bike- only 20 miles but we climbed 2100 feet including a 10 percent grade the last mile into town. Today we rode through acres and acres of olive trees-from horizon to horizon. We stopped at an organic olive oil producer, in Baenas, for a wonderful lunch, an olive oil tasting and a tour of the factory. Very interesting and not enough time to tell the whole tale here. More detail on the rest of the day on our next post. Time for some sleep. Best to all and thanks for your comments. Jim & Pat(Mom & Dad)... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Córdoba April 19th 2010

Another great day of touring. No biking today, so we played tourist. First we had a tour by a local guide of the Juderia(Jewish Quarter). She spoke of the Jewish and Islamic philosophers that lived here in the 12th century. Also spoke of the diaspora in 1492. Next we went to the Mezquita, a former Mosque started in the 8th century. It was spectacular inside, with white and marble arches(over 900 of them), impressive carvings, etc. At its largest it held 20,000 for prayer. After the expulsion of the Moors the cathedral chuch of Cordoba was built inside the confines of the mosque and the minaret was covered by a Renaissance tower. After lunch we went to an Arab bath. Quite relaxing with a cold, medium and hot pool, followed by a massage with orange oil. After ... read more

A good day of cycling with rolling hills and many scenic vistas. Rode 30 miles some with a little too much liquid sunshine. Lots of crops ready to be harvested including oranges and asparagus. As Pat says, from now on she will think of Spain when she smells orange blossoms. Had lunch at a large farm(1300 acres) hosted by Senor Antonia. He was very welcoming and he and his family served a wonderful lunch. His family has owned the farm for 5 generations. Every spring when they plow they unearth more Roman pottery. He shared stories on how and why the Romans started the olive oil trade and pottery making. From here they shipped the large amphora of oil to the far reaches of the Roman Empire. Then it was onto Cordoba to our 5 star ... read more

First real day of bike riding. 34.5 miles, 2,200 feet of climb including 500 feet in the first 3 miles-just to get us going. Lots of liquid sunshine and reverse tail-wind, too. The countryside was gorgeous- olive trees, cork trees, orange trees, storks ( yeah, Bethany) A lovely dinner tonight followed by a flamenco erformance at local taberna (tavern). A good Saturday night in Rio del Palma. Onto to Cordoba tomorrow! Jim & Pat/Mom & Dad... read more

We met up with the VBT folks today. 19 on the tour- 13 friends from CA, a couple from MD and the 4 of us. We traveled by bus to a little town about an hour east of Seville. The CA folks are all friendly and have done many trips together. The next two nights our hotel is a former Franciscan monastery, built in 1492. I think the bathrooms have been redone since then. Right outside our window there are orange and lemon trees. We could pick an orange from the window. We did a brief 9 mile warm-up ride, had a lttle siesta, then a welcome reception and a delicious dinner. Most of the group went to a flamenco performance but we took a pass. We have about 35 miles to ride tomorrow, with a ... read more
