Here's to another wild adventure! So, I stay at Dave and Damien's (my St. Paddy's Day friends) place last night in Limerick after taking a flight back to Limerick from Paris, then take a bus this morning to Shannon Airport to fly back to the States. I bid my farewells with little event and manage to make it back to Boston just fine (I'm flying Shannon to Boston to Philly to Raleigh-- convoluted, I know!). Then things get fun. Seems there were some thunderstorms all over the East Coast and like everything was getting cancelled. So I spent the night at the airport-- yes, my first night back in the States and I'm in the Boston Airport. Well, how else should one end such an adventurous semester? Just one more adventure, right? It ended up amusing, ... read more

Met the new tour group the next day - there are 57 people on the new tour so the bus is full - I am thankful that there are 10 people on it for at least the first part of it - less names to remember. The saddest part was saying goodbye to Amy, my friend and partner in crime!! I’m going to miss you Ams!! Boarded the bus and headed for our usual seat and we finally got moving, I was glad to still have Nat with me for this tour. It didn’t take long to figure out that there were some big personalities on this tour… Feels weird to be without the others after so long and I’m definitely glad that there are still 10 of us left off the last tour. Today’s trek ... read more

I've made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare. I'm a bit nervous so I'm trying to occupy my mind by writting. Nedim on the other hand is reading one of the law books that he brought with him, and surprisingly he doesn't look bored, I'd even say he looks amused :-). Why am I nervous you ask? We'll I'm going to places I've never been and where I don't even know the language, I haven't even left the airport and I've already had my first scare, I can't even imagine what it will be like when I can't understand the security guard that's slowly putting on a pair of rubber gloves, taking my bag and asking me to follow him. "Do you have any thing shaaap in your bag?" he asks in ... read more

Entry by Gemma. Well, what a first week. It has been brilliant. My highlights so far have been: * Visit to Salem Witch Museum. * Tram tour around Boston. * Viewing platform on the 50th floor of the prudential centre where you could see the whole of Boston. * Chilling out in Boston Common and the Public Gardens. Such a beautiful open space in the centre of the city. (Great spot for eating ice-cream!) *Going to stay at Sharon and Dans in New Hampshire and playing with their crazy cat Cosmo. *Eating at the Fish Tale Diner for breakfast. The Diner was authentic American, run by five sisters. *Going to visit Donnas mum Mary at the nursing home and her aunt Peggy (Marys sister) and meeting Bertha the oldest person in New Hampshire, aged 110! Mary ... read more

(Dave writes...) Well, we've been in Boston for 6 days and we're having a great time. We're staying with Donna & Joe, Gem's relatives, who have looked after us and treated us to all kinds of lovely food. We went to Salem on Thursday to find some witches. Friday we went to Boston - a beautiful city that I love more than New York. This weekend we went to New Hampshire and stayed with Sharon & Dan (Donna's brother) & Cosmo, their hugely friendly - and it has to be said, slightly insane - kitten. There's a few pictures in this entry: - Donna & Joe outside of the witch museum in Salem. - Fred, the teddy bear donated to us by Gem's school so we can take it on a trip round the world. He ... read more

Discovered the meaning of "catching the red eye" after our overnight flight from LA to Boston - we were knackered. Lack of sleep and a heavy rucksack meant Sara had an afternoon snooze whilst I perused the local area around the university, music school and Fenway Park (home of the currently topnotch Boston Redsocks Baseball team). Hostel left alot to be desired despite the rates for sharing a 6 bedded dorm and skanky showers!! The next day took a tour around Harvard University and went out for Turkish food (recommended by the Zagat and the Lonely Planet). Despite the nice meal I suffered from food poisoning - the effects of which lasted for several days. Memories of other travels to Egypt and being attached to a drip were never far from my mind!! Sara amused herself ... read more

We didn´t have any accommodation booked for the following night, so we played (drove ?) it by ear and ended up in Oatman. Another ´ghost´town, although this one was still inhabited, by a number of locals making a living out of the fact that Clarke Gable stayed there on his honeymoon night, the noon ´gun fight´and the wild donkeys (burro´s) who come and go as they please. Went to Lake Hasavu City, notably only for its fake lake and London Bridge. Gill once again used her persuasion skills and got us into our Las Vegas (Nevada) hotel a night early.... What is there to say about Vegas - any of you who have been there, will understand how bizarre it really is. Everything is fake, from the Eiffel Tower to the Venetian Canals, to the over ... read more

After dropping Gillian off in Denver we pushed on with the last leg of our tour that would include our faithful and strudy Chuck. There are some interesting places en route from Colorado to the Grand Canyon. A brief summary of our impressions of those that we saw.... Pueblo - not as bad as everyone said it would be, however, we arrived in the dark and left early the next morning. We think of it as the Colorado version of Beatty (ie not much apart from a Motel 6 room). Trinidad - yes, Trinidad. Where we had breakfast after leaving Pueblo - right on the Colorado/New Mexico border. An old mining town with its heart and soul kicked out of it. Lovely historic buildings in desperate need of a face lift. Las Vegas, New Mexico - ... read more

Boston - My Third visit ….Its February and still snowing. Having just arrived from Puerto Rico, my body kind of contracts to preserve the warm Puerto Rican sunshine. Good try, one step outside the terminal and the blast chills your lungs. Logan airport has a confusing car park ..so my brother-in-law who lives here is just as confused in locating the floor on which he parked his car. Several elevator switches and 20 minutes of walking through an icy blast we reach the car. The BIG DIG - My b-i-l, Ashim has been excited about this for a while - for a while??? Well, almost a decade. Result, several years of digging cavernous tunnels you have sinuous serpentive roads strangulating the city and confusing the hell out of drivers. So several missed turns later we make ... read more
