Sunday 4th November Didn't realise that the clocks went back today and woke up too early at about 5am. Caught train to New York Penn. Station at 8am. Had a 2 hour wait in New York for the connecting train, which was delayed as usual (don't know if I've said it yet, but Amtrak must be the worst rail company in the world). Finally arrived in Boston, also known as Beantown (back in colonial days, a favorite Boston food was beans baked in molasses), at 12.30am. A loud mouthed taxi driver drove me round for over an hour looking for a hotel with vacancies. He had a really thick Boston accent and must have been half deaf because he didn't talk but shouted instead (I'm talking loud speaker level). Having had no internet availability in Niagara ... read more

The plane was delayed: the start of our adventure. But that was okay, because Nancy and I got some dinner at a surprisingly inexpensive restaurant right next to our departure lounge at Logan. I enjoyed hearing about Nancy's joys, frustrations, and challenges as an English and language arts teacher at John T. Reid Middle School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The late departure made it a little easier to nap on this red-eye flight, but we didn't sleep soundly; we only dozed between visits of the snack cart and play sessions with the high-tech Virgin Atlantic entertainment screens mounted to the seat backs. These included a "Journey" option with which we tracked our flight progress over the Atlantic. We had set our watches ahead at the start of the flight so that time seemed sort-of normal when we ... read more

Days 67-72: Obfuscator writes - Monadnock State Park was fairly pretty in the morning light, but there was little to see without doing a lot more hiking, and we didn't have the time for that. We got moving, and decided how to spend our day before we were due to arrive in Boston. A site in our atlas caught our eyes, which was America's Stonehenge. America's Stonehenge is a large and and fascinating site. Apparently after many years of study, they've figured out that this massive formation of standing stones is about 4000 years old. Theories about its uses vary wildly, but there seems to be strong evidence that it is built with astronomical significance, much like the Incan temples, or the more famous Stonehenge. It also has what could be a sacrificial alter (complete with ... read more

Today Robyn had to return all the clothes she bought yesterday when she was “living it up”. He retail therapy is two pronged, she feels good buying stuff and then again when she returns it and gets her money back! We had breakfast with Gustavo and he toured around Newbury Street with us. Seriously, are there any other streets in Boston? We pocked in and out of art galleries for a while, some really good, some not so good. Then got an apple cider at our favorite Espresso Royal Cafe. We then went back to Faneuil Hall and the Quincy Market because I didn’t feel like I got to see those nostalgic places enough. Oh, then I just had to try the best Boston Cream Pie in town, which was said to be at the Oak ... read more

Today it was cold and rained. We went and Robyn shopped for a while on Newbury St. Then we got a hot apple cider at our favorite cafe, Espresso Royal Cafe! I had wanted to tour the Sam Adam’s factory so we headed up there on the T. We were afraid we weren’t going to make the last tour but to our astonishment we did make it, but they were so booked up that they didn’t have another tour until 4:30PM (a full hour and a half later). So Robyn took my photo in front of some memorabilia in the lobby and we split. We didn’t have time for that shenanigans. We had a show to catch. We grabbed a clam chowder at Legal Seafood because I had read that it was the best in town, ... read more

We walked the famous Boston Freedom Trail today, starting from Boston Common and the Mass State, through P. Revere’s House, the street where the Boston Massacre occurred, to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, then on to the North T Stop. We followed that Red-brick road till our feet hurt. There were also plenty of spooky historic graveyards along the way thanks to Halloween, the devil’s day. Gustavo didn’t have class today, at least that’s what he told us, so he came along too. We got some American sushi along the trail because Robyn’s Mom had marked it in the map. Gustavo likes my camera. He was pretty astonished when I took some paparazzi style shots in a flutter-shutter way - IMPRESSIVE! We were tired so we killed some time going to a movie, and I showed ... read more

Our first day in Boston; Robyn and I made our way on the T to Harvard Square. After a bite at Grendel’s Den, this Beowulf made his way around the beautiful Harvard campus taking photos of the arbors which were positively bursting with colour. Robyn and I got off early and took a walk down Newbury St. We got an ostentatiously tasty apple cider at Espresso Royal Cafe. Then we made our way back to Fenway through one of the parks of the Emerald Necklace. The Boston Redsox won the world series just Sunday and there was much ado around the stadium. Robyn and I stopped by to peer at the players leaving the stadium. A mob of avid fans stood around cheering on the players as they exited the stadium in their big black SUV’s. ... read more

THE LIVIN END Jefferson 42 Oct 25th. Boston, MA Capt. Vitto owner of M/Y "The living End" once more is bringing his boat SOUTH FOR THE WINTER. Every year for the last decade he has spent the summer up north in the East Coast of the US and during winter he returns south to Florida and the Caribbean in his S/V “Volare”. This winter it’s going to be his first time in “The Living End” a 42” twin screw Jefferson that he acquired last May. He posted an online ad looking for crew.
