Ok, forget anything we've already told you about our favorite beers…which basically means we need to delete this entire blog, since our two favorite things to do when traveling are trying local food, and sampling local brews. Evan fell in love in Prague…no, not with another woman…it was another beer, called Kozel. If anyone has heard of, purchased, or even caught a glimpse of this beer outside of the Czech Republic can you please email me ASAP. He is a man obsessed, trying to find this beer in London…he's even emailed the brewery directly. We brought two big bottles back with us, he drank one, and is waiting to drink the second until we find this beer locally…it might be a while. Prague is a beautiful city. It was untouched by the war and the buildings, ... read more

On January 17th we were joined by Evan's mom, dad, Jay, Sara, and Sunit for a 5 day whirlwind tour of London and Paris…we covered so much ground in such a short period of time, we were all pretty exhausted by the end. Or were we exhausted because we were smoking Cuban cigars on the veranda until 2 am? I think that is more likely what did it! On Saturday we took Eurostar to Paris; we had wonderfully mid winter weather, great company, yummy food, and we managed to cram every major landmark into a 24-hour trip…can it get any better than that? We hit the Louvre, Notre Dame, Musée d'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, a boat tour on the Seine, the Champs Elysée, and numerous cafes and eateries…here are the photo highlights…... read more

Dublin and the Guinness Myth

January 11th 2008

So I am a bit behind on my posts. January 11-13 we took a weekend trip to Dublin to taste test the Guinness and settle the debate once and for all: Does the Guinness really taste better in Ireland? We set out to explore this urban legend the minute we landed…and the answer is…it tastes the same. Myth Busted! Although, Evan will say that the pint from the brewery was fresher, for obvious reasons, but if the bartender pours it correctly, and the taps are clean, it tastes the same. The most surprising fact about the taste of the Guinness was that I somehow found myself really enjoying it…and craving it now that we've been back. I guess it was the magical experience of Dublin that won me over. Although we also went to Jameson, and ... read more

So I am going to admit a little ignorance here, but when we were on our way to Munich we were googling what to do on the BlackBerry—I must have missed the history lesson that highlighted Munich as the birthplace of the Nazi Party, but once we made this discovery we did all we could to cram decades of history into 24 hours. Most of what I am going to write is about the history, so if you’ve been to Munich or happen to be a history buff…just look at the photos. Our night began with a walk down the pedestrian shopping street for more sugared almonds, and ended at the Hofbräuhaus, the most famous beer hall in the world (or so they claim). This place is massive, and full of history…there are 6 major breweries ... read more

Our flight out on Sunday was cancelled thanks to the fog at Heathrow and we spent the night at the lovely Sheraton Skyline, right across from the runway. While annoyed that our trip was about 18 hours behind schedule, the Heathrow hotel had the Pats game on satellite, which was a nice bonus. When we went back to the airport on Monday morning, it was total chaos...thousands of people everywhere, many of them slept there overnight...we were lucky to check in in time and make it through to the gate. Our flight had only minor delays, but thankfully we made it to Munich airport by 11:00 am. After picking up our rental car (Evan had a lot of fun with an Audi on the Autobahn) we got to Innsbruck mid-afternoon on Christmas eve, and spent a ... read more

We want to wish you all a very merry Christmas and we are sad that we won't be able to share it with our family and friends this year. The decision to get a tree was a tough one, because 1) we don't have any trimmings, and 2) we are leaving on Sunday to go to Austria and Germany for the week...but then... we got the cutest ornament in the mail from my MIL Jo Ann...so we got a little potted guy and took some pictures... We also had our swanky black tie Christmas party at work this week...oddly I have no pictures of Evan, but my mom does, so when I get hers I'll post one of us together... Merry Christmas Everyone!! My parents came to visit last week and amongst a million other sites they saw, we all took a 90 minute trainride to Bath, England for the weekend. This quaint city, most widely known for Jane Austen novels and the Roman Baths, was such a charming place to visit. The scenery, the buildings, the history, the Christmas backdrop, everything was so picturesque. This post-card-perfect place got even better, when we arrived at our Inn, the Priory Cottage. It could not have been more adorable, and the innkeepers, Martin and Jackie were great...they made us the most amazing "full English" breakfast...baked beans for breakfast seems out of sorts, but trust us, it was sooooo good. We spent most of our time wandering around, alongside the river Avon (which was a must-see since it is the namesake of ... read more

We took the short 45 minute flight to Amsterdam this weekend...it really is a beautiful place. The city is a string of concentric half-circles with canals separating each part...so you are always crossing a bridge...the architecture is really unique; all of the buildings are tall and narrow and have some of the steepest stairs around. We spent most of the weekend shopping and eating...two things we usually do a lot of. We were in a good location, just off of the main square (Dam Square), where there are lots of shopping streets and pubs, and tons of people...I know these countries are smaller than most US states, but they always seem so incredibly crowded...just trying to walk down a busy shopping street on Saturday morning is not easy. Friday night after we arrived we decided to ... read more

It feels like ages ago, but the blog would not be complete without pictures from Cait and Sean's Thanksgiving visit...they arrived just in time for my wonderful Thanksgiving feast...(as you'll see from the attached photos, it was wonderful). Spending the holidays away from the place that actually celebrates them is always strange, until you enter the ex-pat grocery store...this wonderfullly overpriced Whole Foods-esque place near us was cooking Turkey and all of the fixings like you wouldn't belive...it smelled so wonderful in there, it felt like home. Needless to say we ate the turkey for three more meals over the weekend and (this is gross) I actually think I still have some left over! Next night we went to Amy Winehouse, yes, before she cancelled her tour...it was pretty great. She arrived in one piece, sang ... read more

Hola! Did you know they really don't speak Spanish in Barcelona? We didn't...but it was a nice surprise! Barcelona is a part of Catalonia, Spain, where they mainly speak Catalan, not Spanish. Thankfully the signs were in both Catalan and Spanish, but ordering food and taking taxis were surprisingly difficult with our broken Spanish/Spanglish. We got to Spain around 10 am and noticed there were a few football fans on our flight...we didn't think much of it, b/c I knew that Barca was playing a Champions League game since I had tired to get tickets. We took the bus from the airport, which dropped us off in the main square and we had a short walk to the hotel...it was at that point that we realized that the Glasgow Ranger fans had invaded the city and ... read more
