DAY 7 - Sunday, July 3, 2016 Fair Oaks, IN to Indianapolis, IN to Ohio to Hebron, KY Our final day of driving to our main destination - Cincinnati, OH/Hebron, KY!!! The whole reason for this trip - Answers In Genesis’ Creation Museum in Hebron, KY and the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, KY!!! What a blessing to be here! www.answersingenesis.org We took our time at the campground this morning to get cleaned up and have a nice breakfast. As we were leaving Fair Oaks we saw the “Punniest" signs. A huge 10 foot corn on the cob with a sign that read “Glad you visited Ear”. Then a gas station sign with a cow saying, “We have dairy clean bathrooms” And the final one we saw was a big red circle of cheese with a pie ... read more

You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy traveling down the banks of the Tug Fork River, which separates Kentucky and West Virginia, to discover the legends of the most famous family feud ever documented. Traces of the legendary battle between the Hatfield's and the McCoy's remain today as vivid reminders of the struggle that existed amongst these two proud families. Visit their respective grave sites, touch the PawPaw trees where three of the McCoy brothers lost their lives, and stand in the courthouse in downtown Pikeville, Kentucky where the feud officially began. Locals still tell their versions of the legend and the Pikeville and Logan County visitor centers are filled with books and audio tapes that retrace the stories. Movies have been made depicting the feud and the various versions of the story, ... read more

(Ok now. Hmm) We are on the road again. We have 7 hours and 443 miles under our tires. We picked up the kids from school Tuesday at the end of the day. We were hoping for another extra day off Wednesday for Cheerleading Championship win. We didn't get it on Wednesday this year. It is in April sometime. We needed to get on the road as early as possible so we took the chance. Though, I did forget to call Amy McCloud to tell her the kids were going to be ... read more

Geo: 37.4793, -82.5188Having stopped in to visit the home of the Kentucky Derby, we had to have a look at the nearby "Horse Capital of the World", Lexington, KY- it is the heart of the state's Bluegrass region (Bluegrass is not really blue--its green--but in the spring bluegrass produces bluish purple buds that when seen in large fields give a blue cast to the grass). DH's struggle with equines continues with our visit to the Kentucky Horse Park. The Kentucky Horse Park allowed us a chance to see a working horse farm and learn a little more about horses (and perhaps discover why DH has such a tense relationship with horses??). The park has a couple of on-site museums but we were hoping to see the champion Thoroughbreds in action and DH was looking to channel ... read more

Geo: 38.2549, -85.7664A city like Louisville demands a visit when it is home to the self-proclaimed "Greatest Two Minutes in Sports", the self-proclaimed “Greatest” boxer in history, the self-proclaimed “Number 1 Finger Lickin' Good” fried chicken restaurant chain in the world, and the self-proclaimed “world famous” baseball bat maker. And while you might argue with the “greatest two minutes in sports” since it doesn't involve hockey, it would be difficult to dispute the others. First up for us was the Louisville Slugger baseball bat factory.Legend has it that the son of a local woodworking shop owner slipped away from work one afternoon in 1884 to watch Louisville's major league team, the Louisville Eclipse. The team's star, Pete "The Gladiator" Browning, mired in a hitting slump, broke his bat. The... read more

Geo: 37.1831, -86.15So how often do you get to view the World's Largest Underpants without jostling with peak season crowds. We knew we had to take advantage of our re-entry into Kentucky in order to get the priority viewing tickets for this record setting garment (it was an exhibit in the Western Kentucky University Museum and, to be honest, we were the only ones there on the day we went- apparently it's not quite the draw for others as it is for us). It's not the only unusual item here and the first floor even had a surprisingly large tribute to Duncan Hines, a Bowling Green native. Back in the days when we did own a house, DH was never quite sure where the kitchen was so, given that cooking wasn't her thing, it wasn't surprising ... read more

Geo: 37.0333, -88.35In the interests of political correctness I think it's important to note that we had no expectation that Kentucky was populated with hillbillies. But when we saw the sign promoting a 'Hillbilly Garden' shortly after crossing into Kentucky state line, we knew we had to make the detour. The head of the hillbilly clan in question is actually a native Kentuckian, ex-actor from California (he did have a speaking part on General Hospital back in the day). He returned home after a significant piece of Kentucky land was deeded to him after his mother died. Keith Holt had arrived with two truckloads of toys and a dream-he wanted to build a big, old-fashioned, indoor Toyland attraction, featuring an elaborate railroad of model trains. Outside, he envisioned a ride-able miniature railroad as well as fairyland ... read more

There isn't so much to tell about the final two days of this road trip, and I'm rather exhausted after two days of massive amounts of driving (12 hours from start to finish on both days, though not all of that was driving). The two places I stopped along the way were convenient for breaking up the trips, and my overnight in Bowling Green was entirely to see someone I hadn't seen in a few months. But since I spent the most time there in the past two days, I figured that's where I would mark this post. Monday was primarily driving, and often through rain or misty conditions. My only stop was at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR. It's in the northeastern corner of the state, so basically the opposite side from where I ... read more

"He says" : It has been a while; problem is that we spend a lot of time in RV parks or places that have no WiFi... so we experience a lot and take lots of pictures but are unable to do a blog so please be patient with us.....this is actually being written in Alabama but I know you will forgive me if the "story" of our journey is a bit brief and very condensed!!! Leaving Canada and entering the states was exciting; we crossed the border with no problems and we're now in a land that our dollar was worth 75 cents...comforting that not only are we poor but the label of "trailer trash' is appropriate; the tin cup of begging is now very much needed...I wish I could sing and play an instrument rather ... read more
