Today was a very short riding day as it is only about 35 miles from Cave City to Bowling Green. The first stop of the day was the National Corvette Museum which opens at 8:00. That gave us plenty of time to pack up, get a quick breakfast and be on the road by 7:30. It was a nice easy ride through country roads and corn fields. We also planned to visit the Corvette factory just up the road from the museum, but it looked like all the factory tours for the day were already booked up when I looked online. When I checked at the museum, they confirmed that since this was Corvette Homecoming Weekend 2017, all the tours were indeed booked. I should have looked a few days ago and I may have been ... read more

Today was a nice quiet day of cave exploration. We bought the tickets for an 8:30 and a 12:45 tour of Mammoth Cave yesterday, so our only obligation of the day was to show up. For some reason, we both slept well last night, in spite of the bed being a little hard. After a quick breakfast, we headed over to Mammoth Cave National Park around 7:30. We stopped at the entrance to take the obligatory picture, unfortunately we were the only ones around so we couldn't get a picture of both of us together. We had plenty of time, so we did a little hiking over to the Sand Cave on a path right next to the entrance. Then we headed over to the Visitors Center, but it was still a little early as they ... read more

We got up early this morning - Jody because that's what Jody does - and I because I wanted to be certain that my tire pressure issues were finally behind us. So I got up at 6, took a shower and headed down to the bike for what I hoped to be the last time checking tire pressure. The good news is that it was exactly 42psi just as it should be! So I headed back to the room to book a hotel for tonight and tomorrow in Cave City, KY. I had briefly considered the Wigwam Village Inn in Cave City which are hotel cabins made of concrete and shaped like teepees. They're left over from the 30's, and a little small, so we opted for something a little more conventional. By the time we ... read more

We awoke for the last time in California. I took Abcde down to breakfast but decided not to eat downstairs after I noticed that the furniture was leaving paint on my hands. The breakfast area had been roped off when we checked in yesterday but I didn't know why until I found paint on my hands. It looked nice with a fresh coat of paint, wish they had given it enough time to dry before putting it back in service. I reloaded the car and at about 11:15 we were off to return it. We dropped it off and were in the Enterprise shuttle to the terminal by noon. Our boarding passes said terminal 2 but when I went to check our bag and car seat, I was directed to terminal 3. No biggie just a ... read more

Away we go. Spending the night in a hotel beside the airport is the place to be. The first flight we had found was an early morning departure and so wanted to be nearby so Wife could sleep in as late as possible. That would be relative as we would catch the shuttle at 5am and so would have to wake up at 4. Caroline came home from work and we tried to eat the rest of the leftovers out of the fridge. I got the car loaded and at 7:30 we were on our way. Arriving at the hotel i realized that I had forgotten our compact stroller in the other car. Oh well, I will just have to get one there. We settled in as much as we could and by 11pm were in ... read more

Caroline heard about inexpensive tickets to LA direct from Cincinnati and with a little luck we were able to swing cheap tickets, rooms and rental car for a trip to LA. This lets us visit the left coast, introduce Abcde to some friends and me to burn off the last of my vacation days before they expire. I have never been to LA before, and it has been almost 10 years since I visited San Francisco, this trip should be interesting. We are going to be changing hotels every couple of days so hopefully Caroline will pack light. I am working on finding things to do with a 2 year old and Caroline is just thinking about the beach.... read more

We pulled into the drive minutes before the sun began to drop below the horizon. Tyler and I unpacked onto the lawn and dispersed all the baggage to its respectful owners. The take away: 1. Tyler needs a diaper and cranberry juice or pills, too many bathroom stops. 2. Speck needs to wear more sunscreen. 3. Abcde travels like a champ. 4. Wife needs to be the first through the bathroom each morning, not the last. 5. The Boucherie's 12 hour brisket with horseradish and onions was the best thing I ate the whole trip, closely followed by Muriel's goat cheese crepe with crawfish remoulade and Jack Ruby's butter steak sliders img=http://images.travelpod.com/users/thespeck/thumbnail.xlarge.18.1492043631.img_0834.jpg?1492720209Ariel shot of Jackson square . 6. New crew for the French Quarter Festival. Returning from last year are Caroline, Abcde, and Tyler, we are also now joined by my neighbor Vallery and her friend Joyce. Our luggage includes 6 carry on suitcases, 2 coolers, 4 collapsible chairs, Joyce's walker and Abcde's 2nd most compact stroller, my CPAP and Caroline's backpack (which is playing the part of diaper bag/ Mary Poppins purse). Needless to say, we are blessed to have the Ridgeline Saddlebag available to use to tote some of this stuff outside the car cause sure as heck it wasn't all going to fit inside. Vallery, Joyce, Tyler and I also had small Go-Bags with our toiletries and a change of clothes so that at the overnight, not all the bags would have to leave the car. Caroline drove her car to ... read more

Just finished watching the UK/UNC basketball game. What a shame! But we are ready to travel. Finished packing today and all the packs are within the acceptable limits. Obtained our Euros earlier in the week and purchased 72-hour bus passes which covers the first 3 days of our trip including bus from the hotel to the start of our hike in Wicklow Mountain National Park.... read more
