Six days until our new adventure starts. I checked the weather in Ireland and it is....raining. The first 3 days will be in Dublin and then our hike through the Wicklow Nation Park starts. The weather during our hike appears to be....you guessed it...raining. K and I are up to the task though with plenty of experience in the backcountry during our AT hikes. Although the hiking will be a series of day hikes between B&Bs (just make me suffer), we will be taking our backpacks as luggage since we intend to use public transportation throughout the trip. This will involve a lot of walking as well as boarding/exiting buses and cabs so backpacks seem to be a logical option. We have started laying out our gear with the weather in mind. K and I are ... read more

On Saturday, it was officially one month since we departed Port Dover on our year long voyage. In some ways it seems like we have been gone so much longer, amazing how quickly time passes and how natural this way of life has already become for us. While there are long periods of cruising the water, stretches of days where we don’t even step onto firm ground, it seems incredible how many new and interesting experiences we are blessed with every day. A full day trip down a seemingly isolated river brings the challenge of “dodge barge”; imagine a tow boat pushing 7 rows of 5 barges, each 200 feet long and 35 feet wide…that’s 1400 feet by 175 feet of solid steel pushing towards you! But along the way, there are also herons, pelicans, limpkins ... read more

I've made it back home now, after driving over 4500 miles in the past 19 days. I enjoyed the slower pace of the past 48 hours. Once I got to the Cincinnati Reds game on Tuesday night, the trip really became a leisurely affair. Isn't that how vacation should be? I guess we tend to try and pack as much into our off-time as we can, and sometimes that makes us even more exhausted than when we left. I was glad to have the time over the final two days of my trip to wind down and feel a bit more relaxed. Now that I'm back in Athens, I have a lock-in with the youth group tomorrow night from 6PM-8AM and then have to be on call for Sunday School the next day at church. So ... read more

I know that this is not a trip to a Tropical paradise or to a country where I maneuver through the streets in a tuk-tuk or on camelback but it is still a trip to an unexplored location. I was invited to spend a few days in Lexington, KY to visit a horse farm and after my trip, I thought I would visit my good friend Steve who live in Mayfield.... read more

I departed Riley Creek Campground in Kingston TN on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 with a one week stop planned before I hit Bardstown KY. That would be my aunt’s home in White Mills KY, birthplace of my mother. Since I retired in 1998, I stop almost every year on my way to or from Illinois to reconnect with my aunt and a few of several cousins scattered throughout the area. Technically, White Mills is an unincorporated community (with a post office and a zip code), and, technically, my aunt is an aunt by marriage. Does that make her my aunt-in-law? I’ve never heard of such a thing! My only surviving biologic aunt lives in Florida, and I see her regularly as well. The one-week stop I had allocated to White Mills was considerably longer than my ... read more

DAY 8 - July 4, 2016 Hebron, KY - Answers In Genesis CREATION MUSEUM!!! Prepare to Believe! www.creationmuseum.org 2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” You know you’ve made the right vacation choice when your sixteen year old tells you, “It’s nice to be at a museum where you can believe everything they're teaching.” Our whole family was in awe today of the wonderful, solid teaching from God’s Word - from the beginning in the book of Genesis. God made all land animals on Day 6 of Creation - all land animals includes dinosaurs. What we’ve been taught in public schools is just opinion and theory about the earth possibly being ... read more

Two years ago, I would have never dreamed that I would consider traveling across the country by myself, but that is just what I did. My husband had been working in North Dakota for two months and I was working in a small town in central Texas. It was December and I wasn't about to let him spend the Christmas holidays by himself, so I loaded up my car and headed north. It took me three days, but it was so worth it. Not only did I get to see my husband who I missed desperately, but I proved to myself that I could travel alone. Now I would not recommend setting out on your first solo trip in the dead of winter, especially when your destination is Tioga, North Dakota, but traveling alone is something ... read more
