North America » United States » Kentucky » Paducah August 14th 2014

Geo: 37.0857, -88.5959Today was another travel day. We left Topeka at 8:15 and 70 degrees and headed east once again. The drive took us across the rest of Kansas, and Kansas City (Sharon I was thinking about you), through the lower part of Illinois, and into Kentucky. We crossed the Mississippi River in St. Louis when we crossed into Illinois, and a few miles later, the Ohio River, when we crossed from Illinois into Kentucky. The Ohio River continues a short distance further before it dumps into the Mississippi. We landed in Paducah, KY for the night at one of our favorite hotel chains, the Drury. Beamer was quite bored for the second day in a row. He slept all day yesterday, stood guard duty all night and slept all day again today. I guess we ... read more

My very first genuine road trip! Out to Kentucky to spend the 4th with family and then off we went. We hit up Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio and then we headed on down to the Manmouth Caves after spending the afternoon in Lousiville. From there we continued on over to Nashville, Tennessee for some PBRs and country music. The journey to Savannah had us stopping in Swainsboro at the cutest little Bed and Breakfast and some bad Mexican food before making our way to the history filled, ghost ridden town of Savannah. Then it was time to start getting ourselves back home. Not without a pitstop in Charlotte and Richmond however! Oh and why not make our way to Quantico for a short stop on base. Overall I believe we hit up eight states all together ... read more

We started Saturday morning for Houchins Ferry Campground. We put coordinates in GPS which we took from a website and we ended up in middle of nowhere. We went back to visitor center which was 15 miles from that point and took the exact address of the campground and finally we reached there in evening. We were expecting a nice river side camping before we start an adventurous cave trip but we disappointed. Campsites were good but toilets were really dirty and stinky. We had to use visitor center's restrooms which are 20 miles far from the site. Water in the green river flows so slow that it looks still water only and you will see lot of junk and won't think to swim in that. No hiking trails from the camping site is another disadvantage ... read more

Geo: 37.1831, -86.15We had another great road trip day. We left Morehead a little after 8:00 am, went across the time zone into Central Time, and arrived at Mammoth Caves around 11:30 am CT. We drove around Lexington, Kentucky and passed the Keaneland Horse Track, that was surrounded by rolling hills with white fences....definitely what we think of when we think of Kentucky. We we then stopped by Lincoln's birthplace in Hodgenville, Kentucky, before heading on to Mammoth Caves. Mammoth Caves has the distinction of being the longest cave system in the world, with over 400 miles of documented tunnels. We did 2 miles of them. It was pretty impressive. On to St. Louis, MO tomorrow. It is a 6 hour drive but it is supposed to rain tomorrow, so we will see how far we ... read more

Dann nehmen ... read more

Geo: 38.1839, -83.4328We headed out from Blacksburg a little after 10:00 this morning. Drove about 265 miles today; Rt 460 into West Virginia, I-77 N to I-64 W to Morehead, Kentucky. It was a beautiful drive through the mountains, and there was very little traffic. We drove into Daniel Boone National Forest about 8 miles off of I-64 and drove up to the ranger station at Twin Knobs Campground even though the sign at the entrance said the campground was full. The ranger said, "Oh yeah, we have plenty of sites. We just didn't change the sign." We got a great site near the lake. The plan is to head to Mammouth Caves tomorrow.... read more
