After a fond farewell to South America, we arrived in the USA to begin the next chapter of our travels. We flew via Miami (where we had to question whether we had really left Latin America) to Chicago. Our initial impressions of the country are (1) stores are huge and getting bigger. We visited a couple of Walmart and Target stores that were the size of towns in Scotland or Australia. (2) the people are huge and getting bigger.... monstrous portions of junk food are taking their toll. After getting over the moral dilemma we faced from having just left poverty stricken countries where people beg on the streets for food, I decided to get stuck in too.....! My waist line is heading North once again...... We spent a couple of days with the Murphys catching ... read more

I suppose this is the first Travelblog has heard of it, but I've made all the necessary preparations for a motorcycle expedition. Quit my job at Steripro, been doing some preventative maintenance on "Gretchen" my bike, looking around couchsurfing.org for some places to stay on my intended route. So far it looks like I'll be going to Ann Arbor, checking out U of Michigan and the city of Detroit, then continuing to Toronto and the falls, Toronto itself, then Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City. I plan to be in NYC by the beginning of July, then head to DC, bum around there for a bit since it seems like I know about 20 people there, then head back west through TN, Cleveland?, St Louis, Adam's Army Base, then to Colorado and my many fun friends there. Oh ... read more

Well I'm sitting at my kitchen table here in Chicago surrounded by boxes and text books and thinking 1 more week to go. I decided to create this "journal" to keep everyone informed on my life this summer. I'm pretty terrible at emails and keeping in contact so hopefully this will be the easiest way for people to see what I have been doing down in South America. That isn't to say of course that I don't want people to email, because I do. This will just replace mass email sent to everyone (plus it includes pictures if I ever figure out how to up load them). So feel free to check this page out occasionally or shoot me an email. I finally changed from my school address, my new address is: emily.hallberg@gmail.com not too ... read more

It is hard to believe that in less than 48 hours I will be en route to Africa. After a lovely layover in Amsterdam I will be on the ground in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. I am not sure what my internet access will be through the first couple of days although I will do my best to check in. I will spend the first night at the Serena Mountain Lodge, which by all indication should be a lovely place to catch up on sleep. Upon arriving in Arusha I will have a day or so to settle in before I begin my volunteer placement at Meru Peak Day Care Center. The center is located in Akeri Village of Patandi in Tengeru (not too far from where I will be living). The center aims to provide and promote ... read more

This time I was in Chicago visiting my friends M&A. I took a plane in on Saturday and stayed at a hotel out near O'Hare... which, by the way, is much less expensive than in the city... though it is a 45 min. CTA ride (@ $2/trip) to the Loop; extended stay hotels (e.g. Staybridge Suites) are relatively inexpensive out by the airport, though I stayed at the Doubletree with my hotel points). Sunday morning I took the CTA to the Roosevelt stop just south of the Loop. It was then a short walk to the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium (both next to each other and on the south side of Grant Park). The plan was to meet M&A around noon and go to to Shedd Aquarium. However, since this was Memorial Weekend, the line ... read more

What a great way to conclude our train adventure, a visit with (Andy's sister) Ann and George and their family in Chicago! We took a picnic and spent the afternoon at beautiful Millennium Park and went for a bike ride along the Lake Shore Trail. We saw the stage where the Dahli Lama would speak to thousands the next day and enjoyed seeing our reflection in "The Bean." Then came Sunday's big event, a Cubs game at Wrigley Field! It was our first visit to "The Friendly Confines" and what a treat it was! It would have been so no matter what the outcome of the game, but an extra-inning Cubs win made the day even more special. After nearly 6 months away from home, we leave Chicago on Monday, May 7, and head toward ... read more

03/05/07 - 06/05/07 Chicago After our relaxing break in the Amish country we were ready for the hustle and bustle of big city life. Especially were we ready for Chicago Blues. We checked into the House of Blues hotel in the heart of the action and dined in the their blues club restaurant that night to the fantastic sounds of a solo guitarist and then full on bottle-necking blues band - Awesome! The next morning we headed to the museum of contemporary photography to have a nose but the work was just too contemporary for our tastes so we skipped of quickly and headed up the Magnificent Mile to check out the shops and ogle some of Chicago’s archtitecture. Architecture sure is a buzz word in Chicago. It boasts a whole (what is the collective noun ... read more

So now we're in Chicago...but only for a quick stop. We leave for London tomorrow night so we get to spend the day here. Haven't really decided what to do but probably go to Sears Towers or something. I'll tell you more about it later....probably when I'm home. Mexico was great. Lalli and Anel did absolutely everything for us and we were very lucky to get to see the city with them. Saw the Pyramids, in a rainstorm so we didn't get to go to the top but it was great to see them. It's so amazing how the managed to do all these things at the time. We also went to 6 Flags park and tried the rollercoaster among other things, it was a very nice park. We tried two days in a row to ... read more
