Thursday 5 April An early wake up call, and off o the airport for our 7.25am flight to London, with a connecting flight to Chicago. A short taxi ride away with a pleasant and helpful taxi driver, and we were at Tegel Airport. It is a very small airport, and has an unusual concept of checking in right at the gate, then passing straight through Immigrations and Security and directly into the gate lounge. The flight was very full this morning, with a mix of business travellers and families. We settled into seats 3A and B on this Airbus A319, and were on our way after a short delay. They served a traditional hot English breakfast, with fruit and a selection of breads and pastries. After a couple of extra cups of tea, we were ... read more

We went down to the Maxwell Street Market on Sunday. It's a great hispanic market that runs every Sunday from 7:00am - 3:00pm at Canal St. and Roosevelt Rd. We had the most amazing tacos made with real fresh corn tortillas! Mmmm... I've never had such delicious tacos. We also had Chicago style deep dish pizza, both at Lou Malnati's Pizzeria (439 N. Wells St.) and Gino's East of Chicago (633 N. Wells St.) Although both places make fantastic pizza, we both agreed that Lou Malnati's was better. We walked along the waterfront a lot and marvelled at how amazing it is! Chicago really does set an example for how great Toronto could be if we had a good waterfront. The transit is pretty decent, though awfully loud right downtown where it's elevated above the streets. ... read more

We arrived at the Park Hyatt hotel. What a lovely hotel! The staff were all smiling and welcoming, and so efficient. We were checked in quickly, and escorted to a wonderful room, overlooking Michigan Avenue and the lake. It was so large, beautifully furnished and very elegant with a huge marble bathroom with every conceivable convenience. Apparently this is one of Jennifer Aniston’s favourite hotels! After unpacking and showering, Paul went to Walgreens pharmacy across the street from the hotel, for some drinks and snacks. He asked directions for a liquor store from a traffic Warden, who told him of another store called the White Hen nearby, the only problem was that the traffic Warden really had no idea, and Paul ended up at Navy Pier! Later we rested and watched some television before ordering ... read more

This entry got lost (then recovered, duplicated, and deleted so that there's only one) in the August 1st Travelblog.org crash. Thankfully it was (and still is) totally useless. It's only here so that the US gets colored in on my map. But thanks for having a look...... read more

Hey all, Robyn was hosting me to come along with her for a week trip to Chicago. The Windy City wasn't bad at all, in fact, we managed to do some typical tourism activities, such as eating Chicago famous deep dish pizza and climbing up the John Hancock Observatory Deck. Robyn is a very good host, she introduced me to a lot of new friends, and everybody seems to enjoying my presence. I can't wait to join Robyn again later this year to visit upper Michigan. Till next time, -Cy... read more

Last week was my spring break. This past Friday through Sunday, I got to go to Chicago on MegaBus - www.megabus.com. It's amazing! I got a round-trip bus ticket from Minneapolis for $40... even going by car would have been more expensive. And the nice thing is, the bus only made only one half-hour-long stop in Wisconsin for lunch, so the bus ride didn't take any longer than it would have taken to drive in a car. Anyway, the reason I went to Chicago was to visit my roommate who I had in Vienna, Alex, as well as two of my other friends (Robert and Katie) who were in Vienna last semester, who live in Chicago. Here is a summary of the weekend, plus some pictures :) Friday: Bus ride - not very eventful, except ... read more

I've lost track, but I'm certain I have now visited Chicago as often as I have visited Las Vegas. After 6 trips to Chi-town in 2006, I finally made my first trip there for 2007 arriving late Friday evening 3/23 and departing late Monday afternoon 3/26. More recently, my trips to Chicago had been to visit and catch up with my youngest brothers, Justin and Andrew, as well as with my friend, Travis, who happened to be celebrating his birthday this past Sunday. In addition, I had scheduled this trip so that I could run in the LaSalle Bank Shamrock Shuffle 8k race with Justin. My previous March '05 and '06 visits coincided with Chicago's St Patrick's Day weekend, i.e. dyeing the Chicago River green, going on pub crawls, et al. Turns out everyone who ... read more

Due to popular demand (thanks for your support!), I am hammering out this little entry while hubby has very helpfully gone to forage for hot chocolate and croissants! Yum! Chicago is a beautiful city - architecturally, it rivals NY, but it's so brutally cold! We've had to sightsee in sub zero temperatures and even walk home from a fat tomato-topped pizza through a blizzard! Haven't managed to get down to the iceberged lake because of the weather, but it looks lovely. Apparently, it's called the Windy City not because of the blasting cold, but because of hot air & politicians ... We're staying in a hotel in the Loop with wonderful views over the neighbouring skycrapers. Lying in bed looking at the light glinting off their glass is a wonderful experience. I've always wanted an apartment ... read more
