After a late night arrival last night, today is our first full day (and daylight hours) in Kauai. We started the day off with a helicopter ride. We chose the 60 minute Jack Harter doors-off tour. Oddly enough, Danika didn't panic too much when she saw the doors off. Perhaps because she drew the middle seat up front. While we had been hoping for the back seats, the front seats turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The entire front from 12:00 (overhead) to about 5:00 (by our feet) was glass, so we had amazing views. Meanwhile, Brad teetered on the edge (or at least he likes to claim). The flight took off from the Lihue helipad, headed west toward the Waimea Canyon, up north toward the Na Pali coast, then around past Princeville, to ... read more

We left the relative peace, quiet and calm of Maui and flew off to Honolulu. A 30 minute plane ride somehow managed to take up most of the day. Checked into our 'boutique' (read 'all we could afford'!) hotel and hit the mean streets of Waikiki. The contrast to Napili bay couldn't have been more stark. Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Bvlgari, Tiffany.......... and thousands of people walking around, most of them looking like they only had Wal-Mart pockets. The people who could afford them were safely tucked up in the Pink Palace or one of the many other high-end resort hotels. Had a lovely walk down Waikiki beach for sunset, it was really good to do a bit of exercise, we'd been really lazy on Maui, the beach being seconds away from our condo had proved ... read more

We started the last day of Elderhostel thinking we would wear the leis we got at the Polynesian Center. Then we decided to fiddle with the ones we made the night before to wear to breakfast. We took the latter option. We left them for the cleaning staff because they looked pretty good. Breakfast went quickly. Several took pictures of each table. Up to this point our blessed/cursed camera did a lot of things but it did not do small groups inside very well. We'd tried. Susan had done very well keeping all the administration and logistics straight. She had been so intent upon sharing the spectacular and vivid of Hawai'i that she never really gave us a test to see if any of it had sunk in! But we all knew "Aloha" and "Mahalo." "Blessings ... read more

This entry is primarily for the Martin/Doolittle grandchildren and Sarah Merriwether. Today is the first day since we left Los Angeles that you can stick a pin in your world map to show our actual location---a little speck of land in the Pacific Ocean. The next place for a pin will be Samoa, another tiny speck which is 5 days away. Honolulu is the site of Pearl Harbor. Your parents can tell you a lot more about Pearl Harbor, but it was where the Japanese navy attacked the anchored US naval fleet on the morning of December 7th, 1941. (Google) It was the beginning of World War II for the United States. I was only 11 years old then and Granny Lynne was 4!!! However, I remember it like it happened yesterday because I was listening ... read more

Our last full day together was largely a chance to see the north shore of Oahu. We had our camera out ready to take a picture of Diamond Head. We were going to drive right past it along the coast. Before we knew it, it was behind us and indistinguishable from the other segments of rock wall that now stood between us and Honolulu. It is hard to believe that we missed it again. We got to see some of the best beaches in Hawai'i. It surprised us that they were not stacked body upon body. But that kind of overload was wreaking havoc on the beach and coral so the state was restricting access by charging a fee and limiting the number of people who could go down to those beaches. The state also closed ... read more

Our Field trip today started with the Diamond Head lighthouse which we saw from our coach. We drove on to Hanauma Bay Lookout. This is a beautiful bay and beach. One must pay a fee to go down to the beach because the Choral Reef was being damaged and destroyed by too many people. When the specified number of people have paid the fee, the beach is closed for the day. I can see why. The beach is so attractive for swimming. Susan says often there is a line to get into the beach, but when she was a girl, she often snorkeled here. We continued along the windward coast to the North Shore. These beaches are famous for BIG waves - perfect for surffing. This is surfer country and has beautiful scenery. We stoped at ... read more

It's been quite a laid back experience here at Napili Bay. Much laying around on the beach. In between times we did manage to do a few things. Went out whale-watching, took a snorkeling trip and went to see Ozomatli at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. The whale watch was excellent, at this time of year it would be quite hard for it not to be, the waters are absolutely heaving with Humpbacks that have come here to attend to all the necessities of life........... except eat. The females come here to give birth to their calves and the males come, well, because the females are here. While the females are busy nursing their calves and trying to give them a decent start in life, competitive pods of males swarm around trying to convince a ... read more

Today is my sister's birthday and I called her in Yakima WA this morning to wish her HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. It was good to talk with her and say we'll be back in Longview soon. John and I decided not to go on any of the suggested planned excursions. Maybe we're just a little tourista-ed out? Instead, we went to the Ala Moana shopping center on THE BUS for a little "retail therapy". We bought David a T shirt from the Crazy Shirt store and I found some shell earrings at Hilo Hattie's (a store I'd been wanting to check out). Then we had lunch at the Makai Food Court and saw Claudette there. So we ate together. All of us took THE BUS on the makai side back to our hotel. We realized this ... read more

Have I mentioned that I'm penurious, . . . frugal, . . . TIGHT? Ann really wanted to go to the Polynesian Cultural Center. All she had read about it in anticipation of this trip led her to say it was something we should not miss. But it cost . . . a lot. Almost as much for each of us as it was for my helicopter ride. And our savings were shrinking back home. I was just awful uneasy. "When will we be back here?" Ann asked reasonably. My mental calculator quickly showed that to be an unlikely event given our age and the depression we were entering. It was now or . . . not now. When I called in our reservations, the clerk spoke with a bit of an accent and confused me ... read more
