Day 3: Saturday Rajesh had spotted a Hawaiian breakfast place called Perry Smorgy’s and he wanted to check it out for breakfast. So we went there and they served a breakfast buffet, set amidst Hawaiian surroundings with tropical plants, fish ponds etc. The ambience was superb and so was breakfast. We needed more beach time to whet our oceanic appetite and so we headed out to Kamehameha highway again, but this time towards the opposite side to spend some more time in a couple of the deserted beaches. The Kamehameha Highway was named for King Kamehameha the Great, who conquered and unified all the Hawaiian Islands. We stopped at Kiulima cove and spent some time there, kids played in the water, while I read Jefrrey Archer’s latest Novel sitting on the rocks and Rajesh chewed on ... read more

Today after breakfast, we're all packed and in the coach luggage and all. Our first stop is Hawai'i Volcanos National Park. we walk through the rain forest and through an extinct lava tube. Rob & Susan tell us about the many trees, ferns, and blossoms of the rain forest. We drive up to the Jaggar Musem at the top of Kilauea crater. Once again, we couldn't see into the cauldera because of the heavy mist and rain (at least we got to use our rain coats). We had lunch at the Volcano Golf and Country Club. Yes, even in Hawai'i golfers are out playing in the rain. Next we stopped at Black Sand Beach, enjoyed the scenery, and took lots of pictures. It was a long drive to Kailua-Kona but we all dozed along the way. ... read more

Today we travel over the Big Island to Kona. Kona is the region. Kailu'a is the town to which we will move all our worldly goods that we brought along. Ann and I have traveled to wherever our son and daughter-in-law have lived in the Far East, U. S., and now Europe, so we have learned to pack light. We have only one carry-on suitcase and one personal bag apiece. We found the laundry early and used it often in each place we stayed. Unlike many of our group, we came from and return to a warm climate. Florida does not require a heavy coat, gloves, and boots this time of year so we don't have those bulky things to haul along. Everyone was up and eating the buffet breakfast early because we had to be ... read more

Our first free day, a Friday, dawned pleasant and clear. Ann signed up to go to the Tsunami Museum. Her group left around 9:30 and I left for the helicopter ride about 10. We got our breakfast at Uncle Billy's General Store. Ann and her group of ten met Allen Crawford, accountant for the Lyman Museum. He led them through the small tsunami museum in one of the downtown banks. They saw a video showing the before and after scenes related to where the tsunami hit Hilo almost fifty yeas ago. The Hawai'ian Islands are the capitol of the world in many different ways. They have the most endangered species. Hilo is the rain capitol of the world, having the highest average rainfall of any city. They also have more tsunamis than any place in the ... read more

Our "Free Day" just means we have a choice day. Some of our options were Safari Helicoptor tour of Kilauea Volcanic system, Hawai'i Botanical gardens, Astronomy Center, and Tsunami Museum. I chose the Helicopter tour of Kilauea and John chose the Hawai'i Botanical garden. I was able to go to a Weight Watchers meeting to weigh-in. Susan was able to drop me off while taking others to Tsunami Museum and then pick me up on the way back to hotel. Unbelieveable! I lost 2lbs since last weigh-in!! The Sarfari Helicopter people then picked us up and took us to Helioport and got us all oriented for helicpoter ride. The Kilauea tour was great! and my first helicopter ride too! We could see well - a clear day, and I took many pictures. We saw first the ... read more

Day 2: Friday Slept well and woke up refreshed and very hungry. So we headed out to Denny’s for a big breakfast of omelettes, toast and hash browns and fresh pineapple juice. With a full stomach, we set out to do our first adventure for the day - A drive to the North shore to see sharks, hump back whales and dolphins in the deep blue Pacific Ocean. I love the Pacific more than the Atlantic. ABC stores are located every 100 yards in Waikiki, selling everything from water to Hawaiian clothes. We stocked up on some water, snacks and wine and Niki insisted on buying an underwater camera before heading out. We took H1 west and headed out to Kamehameha highway. The drive was so scenic, lush green mountains formed by volcanic eruptions, cliffs and ... read more

Day 1: Thursday Just when I felt the sight of another snow flake would make me scream and another icy winter storm would make me curse, we were all set to go on our much anticipated vacation to Hawaii for a week of sun n’ sand. Hooray!!! Our flight was from Newark and we reached Honolulu, Oahu on Thursday morning. We took our rental car and headed out to our hotel - Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, right across the street from Waikiki beach. Rajesh felt Honolulu reminded him of Singapore - the streets, the walkways, the sights and sounds. When we reached our hotel, the friendly receptionist noted that we were from NY and introduced us to another guy from NY, who asked us if we had heard of what happened in NY and we said no. ... read more

Getting up was a project after such a big day. But the group somehow was nearly all gathered for breakfast when we came down at 7, the official time to begin. Tired as everyone was, we were excited about meeting Pele, Goddess of Fire. We were to wear red if we wanted her to look favorably upon us. We were also supposed to bring gin but that was overlooked in our excitement. Legend has it that those who meet Pele must provide her with a gin offering. At least that is what a gin-imbiber rumored after surviving a lava flow very close to his place. Kalapana is our destination for supper. That village was devastated by lava from Kilaueia a few years ago and the lava is still flowing over there. To prepare us, we spent ... read more
