I had the best honeymoon ever!! We went to Maui. Rented a private condo and jeep for 9 days. The condo complex we stayed at was to die for! It features it's own private beach that has it's own snorkeling cove. No paying to be boated out to Molokini to swim with the sea turtles. We swam with them for free everyday. Not to mention every kind of tropical fish that you would find in the local aquarium. RIGHT THERE!! 200 FEET AWAY FROM YOUR CONDO!! And that was the furthest building from the private beach. There were buildings that were literally 6 feet from the beach. Booking thew trip was a piece of cake, thank goodness, the last thing I needed while planning the wedding was a hassel planning the honeymoon. We used a website ... read more

After a "continental " breakfast, we visit Lahaina - the Whalers Village - by motorcoach. Our first stop is the Lahainaluna School Hale Pa'i Printing Press Museum. We see the importance of the printing press to Hawai'ians. In spite of the fact that many diseases were introduced to the Hawai'ians, Susan says the missonaries did the Hawaiians a favor by introducing the Printing Press. Before the printing press, Hawai'ian history was all verbal, passed from one generation to the next. Our guide gave us a demonstration on the printing press and explained how the press helps to teach the students of today by giving them a view of the past. While we were there, suddenly a siren sounded and then students started coming out of all the classrooms. It was the signal for the changing of ... read more

Maui is made up of two volcanos, a small one to the west up which the 'Iao Valley extends and a large one to the east, Hale'akala. The plain between them provides farm land for cattle and plantations. Through that plain is the highway between the two coasts, between Kahului and Lahaina. The actual narrows is about ten miles and then from there to Lahaina is another twenty miles or so. Our first stop is at the Hale Pa'i o Lahainaluna. That's Hawai'ian for "house of printing" of Lahaina school. I think "luna" means school. John Young impressed King Kamehameha one day by reading to him. Young said that he could share the thoughts of a man who was dead and had lived in Young's homeland, England. Kamehameha thought that was incredible and immediately saw the ... read more

Today we travel(fly) from Kona to Maui - a 20 minute flight. So we become efficient at loading and unloading all the luggage on and off the motorcoaches. The Beauty of 'Iao Valley and Kepaniwai Heritage Garden. After our short flight, we go to the 'Iao Valley which is in a crater and is the site of the battle of Kamehameha and all the other chiefs of Maui. We have a rare moment and get to see this valley under clear sunny skies. We also can see the rain clouds building off in the distance. It is a beautiful lush green valley with a stream flowing out to the sea. Susan tells us about the 'Iao needle and the significance of Kamehameha 's victory over the chiefs of Maui. We check-in at the Maui Beach Hotel ... read more

We awoke pretty early, around 5:30 am, not because we wanted to beat the rest of our group to breakfast but because we wanted to watch the inauguration. Breakfast could wait till 8:30 and our bus to the airport didn't leave until 10:30. So we tuned in to TV and watched the lead up to the big event. Some ultra-right wing commentators had been saying what a tragedy it would be if Obama became President. Some even went so far as to say he should not be allowed, that they hoped he would be assassinated before the inauguration. Friends in rural areas of Wisconsin really believed there would be serious assassination attempts, based on how some of their neighbors were talking. I wasn't holding my breath . . . exactly . . . till 7 a. ... read more

Day 6: Tuesday Today was Obama’s inauguration day as the 44th president of the United States and the streets were full of tourists and locals wearing T-shirts with Obama slogans. By the time we were ready and out, the inauguration was over in Washington DC because of the 5 hour time difference. If we were in NY, watching the ceremony would have been a priority. But we were not at all drawn to the moment in history, as our mind was filled with the beauty of Hawaii. This was the last day of our vacation. We drove over to the North shore to Haleiwa for our Shark adventure cruise. We checked in as suggested in Pier 35 at the harbor and 2 guys - Tim and Scott took us out on their sailboat. It was a ... read more

Day 5: Monday Hanauma bay was recommended to us as the best place to do snorkeling and also to see a large variety of marine life. So that was the first on our agenda for the day. This time, I was determined to snorkel as we were nearing the end of our vacation. We took Kalanianaole highway, another scenic route, and entered Hanauma bay, parked our car and learnt that they limited the number of visitors into the bay each day to protect the fragile marine life. The view of the bay from top was superb. Niki and I couldn’t wait to get into the water. But first, we had to watch a 10 minute video about how the bay was not a beach park for beach sport, but a natural preserve for marine life. We ... read more

Rob had to return to Hilo to lead another shorter Elderhostel so we sadly say "Aloha" and "Mahalo" ("thank you"). Susan and Rob made a great pair during the past week. Both are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced with everything from every kind of work people can do on the islands to the inner workings of the National Park Service! We were grateful to have had him along. After a buffet breakfast (meals at the hotels so far had been generous buffets which fueled our extensive walks), we rode to the Kona Historical Society site. Marty describes this visit very well at http://www.travelblog.org/North-America/United-States/Hawaii/Big-Island/Kailua-Kona/blog-372748.html I would add that during the visit, I usually carried the camera, Ann's purse, and my own bag with binoculars and other stuff. I confess that I felt a real affinity to the "Kona ... read more

This morning we boarded our motorcoach and set out to discover The Vibrant History of Kona. First is The Kona Historical Society's Living History Farm where we meet 2 ladies dressed in long calico dresses - the style of the 1820's. We hear about the early introduction of coffee to Kona by an American missionary in 1828. Kalukalu was the orignal Hawai'ian name when Englishman, Henry Nickolas Greenwell (HNG) purchased a section of land (1850) in the district of South Kona. Native forest and farmland stretched from the coast to the foothills of Mauna Loa. Hawai'ians planted food crops in the shade of the kukui and 'obi'a trees. Grass houses were a common sight and everyone spoke the Hawai'ian language. Young HNG found Hawai'i's fertile soil and mild climate much to his liking. Previous to 1850, ... read more

Alooooha! Here are the Christmas pictures. I know this post is a little out-dated by now, you can thank the black-out, the fact that I had to wait for Andrea T and Ron to upload them and mail me a CD because the files were too big to email, and my own laziness :) Anyway- Hope everyone is enjoying 2009. All is going good on my end. Pretty rainy out here, but can't really complain. Happy MLK day :) Love and miss yas Allison ... read more
