We got to Hawai on super bowl sunday and went straight to a bar for burgers and cheap drinks, we had a bet and clo won a fiver! doh! Waikkiki is pretty built up and we missed our road trip but it was nice to be in one place for the end of the holiday. our hotel was nice although we changed rooms to one over the pool after two nights cos our old one was so noisy, room 1010 was nicer too, different layout and bigger. well worth a five dollar tip! we went to Hanauma bay twice and went up diamond head which is an old volcano, we also went to a rainforest park and got bit to pieces. would love to go back and see more of our island and the others and ... read more

Rebecca and I got married October 18th in Maryland and then promptly headed out to Hawaii for some relaxation. After a stopover in Atlanta, we arrived in Honolulu late Sunday. We explored the city, enjoyed the weather and got some needed rest. On Monday we caught a small plane to Kauai. We stayed at the Marriott Resort for 8 nights. The weather was perfect and the hospitality was just as good. It was a tropical paradise complete with a warm sun, sandy beaches and frozen drinks. It was the perfect compliment to a long month of wedding preparations.... read more

Actually it's not my last day, technically. But it is the last day of fun. Tomorrow is full of taking students to the airport from 5 AM to 6 PM. So... I need to enjoy today! And I did, for the most part. We went up to the Pali lookout, but spent no more than 5 minutes there because it was so windy. Our next stop was at Kailua Beach, which was also shortened because it was so windy which made the air kind of cold. We also went to the Polynesian Culture Center. The PCC was really nice and beautiful, albeit a bit touristy, but we barely spent anytime there... we had about 1 hour to explore the villages and then went on to the grand luau show at the theater. I would have liked ... read more

Today my group took a day-long tour of the west side of the island. Since O'ahu is quite a diverse island, it was a nice break to get outside of Honolulu. While Honolulu and Waikiki are full of attractions and things to do, I felt like I was getting a one-sided view of what O'ahu is really like. Today was my much needed escape. We started out with a hour outside of 'Iolani Palace, which is the only imperial palace on American soil. It was only in use for the last two monarchs of imperial rule of Hawai'i—King Kalakaua and Queen Lili'uokalani—since it was actually the second royal palace to be used in the kingdom of Hawaii. The whole complex was really beautiful looking. We were briefed by our tour guide (aka bus driver) about the ... read more

Hanauma Bay is beautiful. And pristine. And really paradise within a paradise. We got to snorkel in the beautiful nature preserve and work on our suntans. It was really fun. Won't say much more, I think the pictures speak for themselves... ... read more

It's been a busy few days in O'ahu. Even though everything in Hawai'i is relaxed (why hurry in the sun?!), I've been keeping things at a high intensity level with work. Luckily, I've still been able to get in a lot of fun time (definitely perk of working in the leisure industry). Past few days' highlights include: catamaran cruise on the Na Hoku II, surf lesson in Waikiki, fish tacos at Duke's Canoe Club, and Pearl Harbor (in the rain). ... read more

Today was a "travel" day. We woke up in the south shore, spent a little bit of time at our hotel eating and soaking up the sun, then loaded up the car. Our first stop was the Maha'ulepu Beaches. Po'ipu Road takes you to the dirt road that leads back to the beaches. While a 4WD isn't necessary, the road is full of potholes, and if it has been raining, the 4WD might be nice as an insurance plan. After a while of bouncing down the road, we pulled up to the beaches. There were quite a few people back there already, some relaxing on the beach and others walking around to take in all the sights. We chose to walk around and see what was there. What we found was a great view of the ... read more

Aloha from Hawai'i! I'm here on the island of O'ahu, actually on business. I've been here for a few days now, but today is the first time I've been able to actually slow down a bit and take in some of the sights. Since I graduated from the University of Illinois I have been working for a travel agency that specializes in tours for foreign exchange high school students studying in the United States. It's business, but what better place to do business than in Hawai'i... especially if you're from Chicago! I'm having a hard time believing I'm still in America though. Europe seemed more familiar, despite the fact that I didn't need to exchange money and there's only a slight accent here in the Islands. Riding around in our rented van on the highway is ... read more

We woke up today absolutely drained from our big hike yesterday. After a bit of deliberation, we downsized our day's hike from the Po'omau Canyon Ditch Trail and instead opted for the ~4 miles of the Canyon Trail. The grey clouds in the morning kept the drive in Rod, our trusty Wrangler, a bit breezy, but the sky cleared up as we entered Waimea Canyon. As expected, a handful of the island's finest roosters were at the trail head to send us off. It's nice to have little alarm clocks walking around, going off at all times of day. The hike itself was not overly challenging, and the views were nice. The trail winds around some cliffs out over the canyon, so we got some fantastic views of the contrasting greenery and red dirt. Coming around ... read more

After a mere 11 hours of sleep last night, we started our day by throwing on the hiking boots, filling up our water pouches, transferring the trail mix from the big bag to the small, and heading for the jeep. We had picked out a hike in the Waimea Canyon that would take most of the day, so we were headed out early. Our drive out to the Canyon was gorgeous, as we approached both the coast and the canyon at the same time. Everything here is green, but the different shades of green are so impressive. Somehow we missed the first turn, but that allowed us to explore a little more and catch a later turn that got us to the same place. Eventually we found the canyon road and headed up to about 4,000 ... read more
