South Point was next on the trip. I rented a car and drove to South Point to hike to the Green Sand Beach. Unfortunately for me, I was stopped by construction on the road to the beach and was told to come back before 8am the next day so I decided to check out Punalu 'u Beach for the time being. According to the lonely planet guide sea turtles were known for coming on to shore and sun bathing in the black sand, so I saw it as a an opportunity to cuddle with a turtle.. or at least try. When I got there, I parked and roamed around the lava rock. There were little patches of water here and there, looking a little closer there were two turtles looking for food. Once I finally made ... read more

From the gorgeous beaches to the mountains, Hawaii is just as beautiful as I had imagined. I am struck by the brilliance of the colors. Even the rainbows are more vibrant here than ones I've seen at home. Driving along the side of the mountains is incredible, even humbling. Their large scale and abundant foliage are really stunning. The beaches on Oahu are beautiful, of course, and there is a lot to do in the surrounding areas, though I think I have enjoyed Kailua and Lanikai more than Waikiki because they are a bit more remote. The views at these beaches are lovely, and the water is almost emerald in color. If you are ever on Oahu, you must eat at Haleiwa Joe's. I highly recommend it! We went to the location in Kaneohe. Let me start off with American Airlines sucks, especially at 6 ft., it's such a drag. On a lighter note the individual who happened to sit next to me on the plane turned out to be a 3 year old young lad from Sweden named Simon who was reading a book in Swedish and communicating with me in Swedish. According to his mum he allegedly said, "I admire you Dennis, for your display of vigor and tenacity for wearing a cap at this season. For I am not allowed to wear a cap only during the summertime." A surprisingly bright young chap I might add. Hours pass and fatigue kicks in.. I wake up startled and alarmed at the sight my eyes laid upon. Simon was asleep laying horizontally with his feets (mostly his toes) pressed ... read more

Hilo, the true Hawaii... Hilo is 2 hours drive on the other side from the Kona Coast. There is not a single top-resort, it rains here more than anywhere else in Hawaii, and most of the tourists are day-trippers from the Kona Coast. So why do we spend so many days here? Well, thanks to Marty, Chris and their two daughters, we are going to discover the true Hawaii. Marty is one of Ma'ri sisters, so this is also for me my first family visit. Guys you are great, we had an amazing time with you and hope to see you again very soon. Thanks for your warm welcome and to have make us discover your little corner of paradise. As I say Hilo is more rainy than Kona, but this also mean much greener. Over ... read more

The next day I decided to rent a Moped to attempt to make it to the hard to spot Black Sand beaches of Kiholo Bay. Being that I had never driven a moped before I was a bit skeptical about being able to successfully operate it on the Highway, but I figured my training of riding 4 wheelers might help a little. I started out with baby steps, riding around in the parking lots, around Kona and then finally braved the highway (with no helmet I might add). Hawaii doesn't require them so the rental place doesn't provide them either. Before reaching Kiholo I stopped at Kekaha Kai State Park and Beach 69 finally spotting a sea turtle or two. Once back on the road the only indication that I was close to Kiholo Bay was ... read more

The next day I had a 6 am wake up and headed on foot from the hostel to Jacks Diving Locker for my first day of scuba diving. Scuba in California was freezing so I decided to give it another shot in Hawaii. Even before we left the marina I saw a guy pulling out a huge swordfish from his boat to load into the back of his truck, it was crazy. On the way to the dive sites (High Rock and Freeze Face) we saw a bunch of dolphins playing in the water too. There were various skills I had to complete on Dive 1 and 2 for my open water cert. All went well except I ended up with mild barotrauma and had to miss out on day two. But that didn't stop me ... read more

When I arrived in Kona I checked my stuff in at the Koa Wood Hale Inn Hostel in Kailua Kona and decided to go for a walk. I ended up at the Old Kona Airport which is covered in lava rock, coral and awesome little crabs moving around everywhere. There were a few places to snorkel along the way as well. After that, I decided to explore the little town of Kailua Kona, I found some pretty flowers, mugomba seeds, experienced shaved ice, kava at Kanaka Kava and good food. I quickly found my favorite eating spot Lava Java, practically ate there every day while feeding the little birds ... read more

Mokulele Airlines....the name alone says it all! Honolulu is only a short flight from Kona...but once we land, we are in a different place. The lava fields are all over...not the red one for those who don't know, but the lunar landscape is already all over us. Another cool car...this time a little Mustang...we love the sound they do...and ready for our first stop, the Four Seasons Hualalai. Let's say this is pure spoiling. An amazing place...if you take out the guests who arrive there by private jets. Not us, but didn't stop us to enjoy the place. First stop, one of the pool, or should we call it a pond, or even...paradise. A huge salt water lagoon, in which you can snorkel with two white spotted eagle rays. The pics speak for themself. Leslie has a week of holidays for Spring Break...which means a week to head somewhere for three of us. Won't mind it with all the stress of the past few weeks. So here we are in Shanghai, ready for our Japan Airline flights...first to Tokyo than on to Honolulu where we arrive the morning of the 21st....even before we left Shanghai. The last few months and years, when people asked me if I've been there or there...they always end up asking me if I've been to Hawaii...and the answer was always no. But Ma'ri gave me a very good excuse to say yes this time. This will come later. So we spent few miles to get us 3 tickets to Honolulu...I know, it's the crisis... Waikiki...not my dream, but as we were landing in Honolulu, ... read more

Doesn't it sound hardcore? Well, it wasn't so bad... We're alive... and so is the four year old kid we also saw clambering over the cliffs, so no need to worry! The pictures speak for themselves, so we'll let them do most of the talking... To sum it up: it was 25 miles (40kms) of cliff-side hiking through dense jungle, over sheer, rocky cliffs, and to a semi-permanent "hippie-colony" where naked people let it alllll hang out - a great hike, spread over four days. We were a little worried about it - The Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali coast - seeing its 9/10 Sierra Club difficulty ratings, and words used to described it including: treacherous, challenging, grueling, "one mis-step could be your last" etc - but it was not nearly as worrisome as we ... read more
