Today we took a North Shore tour from our youth hostel. Cost per person is $25- and this compared very favourably to the prices of $70-$100- which the tour touts were suggesting as the bargain price along Waikiki. But we could have listened to a presentation only 90minutes long from these super salesmen and then the price magically was reduced to $20-. These presentations were going to be about an all in one "wunderbar" on line travel facility, which of course we would have no obligation to buy off. Hate hate hate these. The North shore trip today was with Jessie our driver, who works as a Jack of all trades at the hostel, currently he is remodelling the bathrooms as well as being a tour driver as needed. It took us from Waikiki up north ... read more

Aloha! Welcome to our blog. It may not look like much yet, but sit back and enjoy; I promise things are about to get interesting. It the eve of our departure from Hawaii- tomorrow night (most likely dark and stormy) at 11 pm we will board a plane to New Zealand where we will explore glow worm caves, travel the North Island, eat lots of mutton, and sing our little hearts out (we're on a concert choir tour). After a week, we will fly to Australia and repeat the whole thing (minus the glow worms, North Island, and sheep... so, mostly just singing). The end of the tour signals our return to Colorado for a period of approximately 8 weeks, 3 days, 22 hours, 15 minutes and 39 seconds, after which we will leave once more, ... read more

My trip to Hawaii has officially started finally. I flew 2hrs30min to Houston, Tx for a 2hr stop and then 8h to Honolulu,Oahu. I had to pay extra for each checked in bag. $35 for first bag and $25 for second. Not so bad considering that I have almost all my gear and its one stop. My checked luggage left yesterday with my original plane. In my 30 lbs carry on I have a spare camera body, optics, strobes, strobe battery packs, a fleece and pretty much anything that I wasn’t going to use during the flight but than needs to be in the compressed cabin. I am glad they didn’t weight it and I could wheel it around. In my backpack I travel every thing that I use: laptop, ipad, iphone, ipod, 2 strobe battery ... read more

... read more

Hi there folks and welcome to our search for sea turtles ashore on a beach.............well we started out at seven this morning and headed out for the North Shore stopping in some and driving through the following towns in an effort to reach our destination......our first point of interest was at the foothills of the Ko'olau Mountains and then on too Chinaman's Hat while driving through Kahaluu...Waiahole...Waikane...and then stopping for a wee stretch where we were lucky enough to find some beautiful birds....(Hey Alvin your Fav's)we then followed the coastline passing through Sweeny Beach Park....with the Crouching Lion Restaurant right across the road....we then moved on to Punaluu where we started looking for turtles but to no avail...we then stopped at Ted's Bakery where two young people told us the pastries were calorie free ...well they ... read more

As travelers, we are always walking a fine line between trying to see and do everything and not looking like a kook tourist. But you also dont want to fall into any tourist traps either. So you go look for your own amazing things and leave the crowds behind. But sometimes something is cool enough to warrant a look... If you find yourself on Oahu, The Polynesian Cultural Center on the East side definitely is a must do. Located next to the Brigham Young University Hawaii, it offers youth from all the islands of Polynesia the chance to come to Oahu and get a college education, who work at the PCC and teach people about their culture. While they gloss over some of the human sacrifice and cannibalism, they do a great job of displaying life ... read more

After a scenic bus ride we took a very quick visit to the famed North Shore. The big waves that the region is known for were not to be seen, as they only roll in during the winter months. The beaches were still as gorgeous as ever and it made us wish that we had allotted more than just the one night to visit. We stayed with a host from Couchsurfing, Sam, who has the pictured view from his back porch .... read more

We spent the fourth day at the Polynesian Cultural Center near the north shore of Oahu. They provided us transportation from our hotel. It is a living museum of the culture of Polynesian islands. This cultural center represents seven islands of the Polynesia: Hawaii, Tonga, Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa, Aotearoa, and Marquesas. Polynesian cultural center is divided into above mentioned villages. All the villages exhibits and conducts activities of respective cultures. They also participate in some common activities like Canoe Pageant “Rainbows of Paradise” and a multicultural show "Horizons: Where the Sea Meets the Sky". There is also an IMAX theater, a lagoon for canoe ride, and an open-air auditorium. There are several options for food and beverages also. In a way, this is like a theme park without rides! But, more entertaining in its own way! ... read more

The Polynesian Cultural Center in Lā'ie is a complicated and totally postmodern experience. Out of the four major lū'aus on O'ahu, the PCC's seemed like a no-brainer. It's not the cheapest, but it isn't the most expensive either, and for the price you get a full day at a 42-acre living museum, a buffet and dinner show, and an evening auditorium show. They showcase six distinct Polynesian cultures in addition to Hawai'ian. When I was a kid, some friends of mine studied Polynesian dance, including Tahitian and Tongan, so I knew this was something I wanted to see and share with LG. Plus, I figured a dinner show would be pretty boring for a 7-year-old and the least we could do is wear her out with a full day of activities first. After settling on PCC's ... read more
