I met my good friend Steve when I moved to Washington DC on business back in the 80s. We built a large sales organization for a direct marketing company. It was about to become profitable when our supplier went bankrupt and put us out of business. After that business failed, we then joined a vacation time-share company marketing a resort in Majorca, Spain. I was the number 1 salesman one month and Steve was the number one salesman the next month. We then convinced the owner of the vacation time-sharing company to change his marketing plan from mail solicitation to direct sales. The reorganized company was on course to be a big success. We performed as promised. The owner then decided that Steve and I would be making too much money if he paid us what ... read more

On the road again Perjantai kello 17.00 – lauantai kello 12.00 matkustettiin New yorkista Atlantan lentokentälle vuokraan autoo. Lisäks ajateltiin, että uudemmissa autoissa kulutus on varma... read more

Here are a few odds and ends from our trip. You might note that one of the "sea things" had a little help from man. These were on the beach at Grand Manon Island. There's one blog yet to come -- the restoration of Cass, the old lumber / railroad town in West Virginia. Paula... read more

The NEW Dali Museum headed the to-do list for this trip to the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. It opened in January 2011. The Dali is located at 1 Dali Boulevard, St. Petersburg, Florida. The Michelin Guide calls it “among the ten buildings to see before you die.” It's worthy of the accolade! Salvador Dali, one of the fathers of the Surrealism art movement and arguably one of the most complex and controversial artists of the 20th century, was born in Spain. The US was his second home. He attributed much of his fame and fortune to America and American themes like exploration and discovery by Columbus crop up frequently in the art. We had experienced Dali’s work in St. Petersburg previously at the "old" Dali Museum. I say “experienced” because, while intriguing, it takes some time (and ... read more

This is an attempt to log my month long study abroad session in The Hague, Netherlands and Lausanne, Switzerland, with hopeful stops in Brussels, Bruges, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Paris, Munich, Zurich, Zermatt, Basel and Lucerne and wherever I end up... I fly out of Tampa on 6/30, with a stop in Canada and then land in Brussels on 7/1 and I leave from Zurich on 8/1... I will attempt to put as much as I can down but with actual class to attend, I do not know how much time I will have between books and travel.... ... read more

St. Petersburg likes to call itself the Sunshine City. It gets quite a lot. In 1910, the St. Petersburg Evening Independent newspaper instituted a famous offer that the paper would be free if it rained that day. In their seventy six years of publishing, they had to make good on the offer 296 times, less than once every three months! For obvious reasons, this city has attracted tourists since it was founded. St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Art St. Petersburg is also known as an arts destination. It has a large number of galleries. It also has two of the better art museums in Florida. These museums were my first targets for the day. The St. Petersbur... read more

(written on a Greyhound going N from St Petersburg to St Augustine while a Democrat/Republican political argument and just about anything else (largely influenced by Mike Moore in the case of one participant) rages across the aisle) My main/only reason for stopping in St Petersburg was to visit the Salvador Dali Museum there. It was only 3 hrs fr. Ft Myers so a relatively short hop. Had a late night on the Net in Ft Myers organising stuff further on, like a hotel in St Petersburg (which tends to be referred to locally as SanPete). Bus left at 11.30am and got there at 2.30pm. The small old style hotel (in the America’s Best range) was within 10 mins of the Greyhound depot which is an essential criteria for me obviously. I do miss those European walk ... read more

We enjoyed our time here and have to say environment wise it was one of our favorite campgrounds. There was a large enough pond for Bob and Chris to take out the Porta Bote and fish and they had BINGO at the recreation center where Chris won a round which he was very excited about and we were excited as well as it gave us laundry money for the week.We had a neighbor from Alaska and another neighbor gave us directions to a manatee viewing center at the Tampa Electric Power Plant I wish that the photos were clearer of the manatees as there were many in view but they only surfaced briefly, afterwards we went to Goodson's strawberry farm for some fantastic strawberry shortcake. While here we also went to Busch Gardens in Tampa we ... read more

I got a phone call from Thomas, my friend and fellow photography enthusiast, the other day. He has had a pet project going for some time. He is documenting the iconic St. Petersburg pier and pavilion. The City Council has, as if they didn’t have other pressing matters to attend to, voted to tear down the structure and replace it with something much cheaper and certainly of less service to the community. Thomas’s project is to save a photo and video record of the pier so that some day in the future others can look back and wonder what it was like in the good old days. He had been filming yesterday; he went on a sight-seeing helicopter ride over the city, the yacht basins and pier. He wanted to reshoot the video segment and wanted ... read more

This is a return trip to Fort Desoto - interestingly this destination has the highest stastitics on the blog by almost 3-1. We love the water front campsites, the great bird watching, the award-winning beach, and the proximity to restaurants and attractions. We made our requisite stop at Billy's Crab House in Tierra Verde, on the access road to Fort Desoto Pinnellas County Park, for stones crabs and scallops. Stone crabs have just come in to season. They take a little work; but are very good - especially when served hot with drawn butter. A birthday party of 40 something fun people joined us at the third floor open air bar for a drink ($1.99 Margaritas) and cool music by a guy our age named Jeff playing and singing songs from our era.
