Beautiful-- the only way to describe Interlaken. Interlaken means between two lakes, and well gosh darn it if that wasn't the most proper name ever, nothing is. Not just any lakes, but lakes that are the brightest blue/green and as clear as gin. However, for as beautiful as the lakes are, the mountains overshadow them. Being poor, we took the more affordable option of the day, and that was to take a funicular (a train that goes up a mountain at an angle) up to a restaurant on the side of a foothill of the swiss alps (mind you we were still some 4000 plus feet up). After lunch, a few of us decided to climb to the top of the peak we were on. The climb was fun and probably only about 2.5 hrs round ... read more

Bern--- 'tell me bout the bears'... Well Bern is a pretty cool city, or cool enough for a day trip. All I knew about Bern was that they had a 'Bear Pit' (as some of you say in the youtube clip)... Well there is so much more. Down their main street they have little fountains that just have a little stream of water coming out of it, but each one has a different them to it (be it from an ogre eating a baby, a bear with a gun, a woman with a sash on her back... there are quite a few). As well on the main drag of Bern there is an impressive clock, which I havent quite figured out yet. It has the standard clock, but as well below the clock is another massive ... read more

Geneva--- lest just say the first 5 hours in Geneva weren't too good. We had to go to the UN and the WTO (world trade organization)... let's just say neither of these was too exciting (not surprising considering we had to get up at 7am to make it there only to miss the train out, then wait at a bus stop forever once we go there). Needless to say many people wanted to go home, but myself, Ryan and Clark decided to stick around, because we could. Once we were able to leave the WTO, we made our way to Lake Geneva (lac leman to the French)... Well its just as beautiful from the Geneva side as the Lausanne side-- except the Geneva side has the worlds largest fountain, which is essentially only a single fountain ... read more

Aww Munich. We arrived at main train station in Munich around 7am. No rest for the weary though. We stopped by our hotel and dropped off our luggage and made our way back to the city center of Munich. Let me explain Munich by telling you what its not. It's not Paris, it doesn't smell and doesn't have a tourist trap or someone trying to sell you something every 30 seconds. However, its an absolutely beautiful city. I once again, can not tell you too much about the city historically; but we went through a couple churches, and saw some quite amazing things. (see the pic's and you'll understand)... In the center of Munich there is a huge city hall dealio, and at 11a.m. it puts on a show. Attached to this city hall is a ... read more

So this is a bit of a dis-jointed blog. We departed the Hague on what could best be described as tropical storm weather; damaging winds and light rain. Needless to say thru some connections here and there, I made it to the station and made it on the overnight train to Munich. Got on the train aroun 9pm, got off around 7am. Munich is beautiful... sadly my camera was dead the first day, so I will have to go back and put that blog in later once i get the pic's from my picture cohort Ryan. Therefore, this blog will mainly focus on Neuschwanstein Castle (apparently it inspired sleeping beauty's castle)... That being said, it was a 2 hour train ride out to Neuschwanstein, but boy was it worth it. We went thru lower Bavaria and ... read more

This blog will just go through the little time we spent in Scheidam and Delft (famous for their delftware china) on Monday (still on no sleep). Our trip to Scheidam was strictly to see the windmills there, after all what would a trip to the Netherlands be without seeing some windmills. Apparently, the windmills are used to help pump water out, due to the fact that most the country is below sea level. There isn't much to be said, for a windmill is a windmill. However, there are several small bridges that cross the canals throughout this country, and we found one that oddly enough is hand cranked up by two men. After letting the boat pass, they get on their bike/ scooter and make their way to the next bridge to allow the vessel to ... read more

The last day in Paris. The plan was to go the cemetery Pere Lachaise, then go to the catacombs, and finally end up at Versailles. Well, the plan went of quite successfully. I got up around 8a.m. and took off for the cemetery. While there may be many famous Frenchies buried here, I was only interested in finding the final resting place of one Jim Morrison. After a few circles through part of the cemetery I found his grave (the most visited in all the cemetery; probably making it 2nd to Napoleon in all of Paris... so I claim). There's nothing too exciting about it, but there is a tree right next to it with hundreds, ney thousands of inscriptions on it; mainly lyrics etc etc.. I did not have a pen so I could not ... read more

Gay Pareeee day 2... To start the day, I headed to the Sacre Coeur, a very Islamic influenced Catholic church. It is on the north side of Paris, and sits a top a hill (recall the last blog) offering a great view of Paris. I got there, and just had to go to the top; and for 8 euros (thanks mom and dad) and a few hundred steps I made it to the top and managed a few good photos of Paris. I can not tell you much about the church other than its beautiful, and there was a guy out in front playing the harp (and he was quite good). After leaving the church, I made my way to the Hotel Invalides (originally a hospital for vet's and wounded soldiers). However, at the metro stop ... read more

Paris. How do I describe it.... After a 6 plus hour bus ride from the Hague, what could I possibly expect. Well, it was a rude awakening at 6a.m. I got in to the metro station, and well it smelled like a sewer leak, first impression, not good. After taking a quick metro ride I decided I had enough and that I would just get out and start looking. I knew kinda where I was and figured I'd walk to Notre Dame, and then maybe see some nearby sites before making it the The L'ouvre. The plan was successful. I got to Notre Dame before any crowds (and before it opened), thus affording me the ability to just take it all in. It is quite an impressive building as the pictures indicate. I never made it ... read more

July 7th 2011

This is a good bit late, but I will chronicle our trip from Brussels to The Hauge. Allegedly, it is a 2 hour-1 train trek; however due to some power outage in The Hague, it took more like 4 hours and 4/5 trains ( I lost count) and a few miles of backtracking to finally make it to The Hague. And, of course, we came in to the train station furthest away from our stay. On our taxi ride though, we were able to see a few things, such as Chinatown (apparently the Hague is known for indochinese food) and the Queens Palace (more of a ceremonial/administrative place). We finally arrived at our destination, the ISS (institute of social studies). Got my key and headed to my room. And boy let me tell you; I was ... read more
