Hello to everyone, This is a preemptive kick off email to what I expect to be a steady stream of crazy and colorful travel stories over the next 3 to 6 months. For those of you who did not yet know, I am setting off on a Latin American adventure at 8:30 a.m. today when I board a plane to Lima,Peru. I plan to explore the country and pay a visit to Machu Picchu during the first few weeks before continuing on into Bolivia where I shall spend some months working at a wildlife refuge in the rainforest. I expect to seek out further work/travel opportunities after that, but don't yet know what to expect. It will be a solo adventure unlike any other I've undertaken. Unpredictable - yes. Eye-opening - I imagine. Crazy/exciting/frightening/liberating/enlightening - unquestionably. ... read more

Hello hello! We are home safe and sound. It was a long day of traveling and I was soo glad to get home! We have snow and it's so Christmas-y and dreamy here. Chris and I are exhausted...and adjusting back to reality. Chris is at work and I'm doing home things (piano, ballet, baths...)....TONIGHT we get our Christmas tree and decorate the house! Yea! Well, I will try to get our pics on here in the next day or so... Love, Gan... read more

The train trip to Denver was a long and arduous one. It was an overnight journey and the guy in the seat across from me insisted on snoring all night. It sounded like a pig being slaughtered. I finally found someone who is a noisier snorer than my Dad. Then he started to fart in his sleep. And finally, to top it off, he decided he was too hot and rolled his shirt up unleashing his giant, flabby belly. As a result of my enforced insomnia I spent most of my first day in Denver catching up on sleep. On the first night I watched the Christmas parade go by my hotel window. They had some huge ballons which were pulled along by people on the ground. Most of the ballons were cartoon characters, such as ... read more

Well... we are on our way! We had our first meeting as a Rocky Mountain region in the form of a Thai dish potluck on Sunday. It was great to meet new folks and see the familiar ones again. We had a great dinner and Juelle led a conversation about what to expect on our trip. What an amazing group we have. We are truely blessed!... read more

Ah, my first real journal entry. I'm not sure how good I'll be at recapping everything I've been up to (or how interesting it'll be to anyone other than myself and my mother) so I'll try to keep this blog updated and succinct. As those of you who ran into me online or on a random street corner over the last few days know, Iwas supposed to deploy to The Ice a few weeks ago but got held back due to medical clearance miscommunications. Long story short, my dentist gave me copies of my x-rays instead of originals and even though I have duplicate originals made and overnight mailed them to Denver, they werent processed in time and thus I was bumped by a week and a half. It was a great week because I got ... read more

070928 Denver, CO After Boise I headed to base dropped off some stuff then drove straight through to Denver. Seaver was at a place called the Ginn Mill. It was a long twelve hour drive and I should have driven faster because apparently the grand opening of the Ginn Mill had free beer until 10 and I showed up just after that! I stayed at Seaver’s parents’ who had an extra room and were really nice. The next day we met up with Neil, yet another co-worker, and headed to Stanley Lake to go wake boarding with some of Seavers friend, Gino and Tom. Bridgette met us at the lake after first showing up on the wrong side then eventually finding us just as we were about to get on the water. Bridgette was…yup, you guessed ... read more

So I woke up early this morning and took one last run down by Glasgow U and Kelvingrove Park before packing up and taking the long walk to Buchanan bus station. All my flights (GLA-EWR-ORD-DEN) were on-time, which really surprised me, especially considering what had happened on the way over. The culture shock is always worse coming back home. This has always been my experience. Being back in the States just messes with your mind in strange ways. Everyone and everything is louder, it seems, and everyone is most definitely about their business and in a hurry to wherever. Probably one of the reasons Ft Collins and Boulder appeal to me so much, is that they are a little more laid-back than some other places in the States I've lived. I didn't get back to my ... read more

On the 28th, we woke up, and piled in the car to get Ruber from the airport in Denver. I was sooooooo happy to see him after 3 weeks away! He was tired (as we were), so we went home to rest & headed to the Boulder farmer's market for some lunch. Tyson drove us up to Flagstaff Mountain for some awesome views over the town and beyond. When we headed down, we packed up the car & went into Denver to a baseball game! Becca had gotten some awesome seats, right behing home base, so it was totally cool to see a game up close. The Denver Rockies were playing the LA Dodgers, and it was a fun game. Tyson was a real star and spent most of the game explaining the rules, techniques & ... read more

Okay, so I realize that I'm still in North America and I'm still in Colorado, in "Denver," and that none of this is very interesting or travel blog worthy. But I leave for India in approximately two weeks, and so I consider myself worthy of writing in this travel blog. Now, an explanation for my blog's name, Olive Face. Well it all began one evening when I was a sophomore in college and I happened to be having a routine insult war with my then-room mate--and one of my favorite people ever--Melissa. You know, typical school night, sitting back-to-back in our room, each on our respective computers, typing mock-insults to each other via AIM. I'd call her a flea-infested jockstrap fungus and she'd call me a writhing sack of worm-loving ingrown toenail clippings and I'd call ... read more
