dr ee Phew! After a long hard slog in London finishing my phd, I am finally on the road for a few months to get a fresh perspective on life before finding a job. This is my blog to keep friends and family updated on my whereabouts, and to share my experiences and photos.

****THANKS to everyone who helped me restore my blog- I think I now have most of the entries & photos back online (although many photos are missing captions, I'll fix them when I have a chance). I'm trying to back everything up now, so hopefully I can restore again easily if i have the problem again!

Hello friends! As those of you have been reading this have probably realised, I have not been on internet very much over the past few weeks, and I am VERY behind on my blog! I didn't quite realise how much "in the middle of nowhere" the south pacific really was before setting out on my journeys. It's literally on the other side of the world from London, and let's just say the lines of communication are not quite what I am used to. Since Wednesday I've been staying with my friends from Oxford- Simon and Jeannine and their lovely children Max [View Full Entry]

I've realised that I haven't been as good about keeping my blog up to date as I was hoping to do. Not only is it difficult to find an internet connection that works in the middle of the South Pacific, but lying in a hammock reading or snorkling among the amazing corals is so much more appealing. However, as I finished up my 10 days in the Mamanuca & Yasawa Islands of Fiji, I've come down with a nasty flu (at least I think that's what it is), so I'm stuck in a rather nice backpackers hostel (clean, air conditioned & [View Full Entry]

On the 28th, we woke up, and piled in the car to get Ruber from the airport in Denver. I was sooooooo happy to see him after 3 weeks away! He was tired (as we were), so we went home to rest & headed to the Boulder farmer's market for some lunch. Tyson drove us up to Flagstaff Mountain for some awesome views over the town and beyond. When we headed down, we packed up the car & went into Denver to a baseball game! Becca had gotten some awesome seats, right behing home base, so it was totally cool to [View Full Entry]

Slothing

North America » United States » Colorado » Boulder
The next few days after my trip with Becca were spent slothing around her apartment & doing emails at the Boulder Public Library. On the 26th, we volunteered again for 5430 Sports, this time for a 3km run through the centre of town. We now had moved up to microchip detachers after the runners crossed the finish line (woo hoo- promotion!). We met a lovely couple who were retirees who live in Staten Island, NY most of the year, but head out to Boulder for their summers. They LOVE sports, and until recently have been avid competitors, but now spend all [View Full Entry]

Wow- after getting back from 3 days in the Rocky Mountains, I was blown away by how pretty they are, and the variety of flora & fauna. Every 30 mins the scenery changes, and you enter a different climate with new animals. It's really amazing, and you get really entranced by driving through it or hiking. Becca & I left Boulder after the triathlon on the 22nd (or rather after our nap after the triathlon), and headed to Estes Park, on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park. The drive there was really nice, but we were both really tired, [View Full Entry]

Becca dragged me awake at 4.45 (WHY did I agree to this??????) so we could head to the Boulder Reservoir and volunteer for a triathlon hosted by 5430 Sports. I am not exactly an early morning person, and definitely not when the reason is to wake up to watch sports, but I thought I'd try to do a good thing & help out. I was rewarded by a beautiful sunrise over the reservoir as we parked the car, which was laden with kayaks & sports kit. Tyson & I headed to the volunteer area & got some spiffy green t-shirts, and [View Full Entry]

We woke up late after a late night drinking session, and had a big brekkie at Becca's place. Becca & Tyson then decided to take me on a hike in the area, which I was sort of nervous about, since they are athletes & have a slightly different take on a "little hike" than I do. Becca's friend recommended a hike nearby, so we drove through the beautiful mountains past Nederland (called Ned by the locals) to the Hesse wilderness area. We parked the car & I got all of my new kit on (new hiking boots, water bottles, binoculars, camera, [View Full Entry]

Wow. Arches National Park is simply amazing. Really stunning. We woke up to a BEAUTIFUL campsite, nestled among the huge red stones of the park. The sun makes everything glow, and you feel like you are on Mars or something. We had some brekkie, and then headed out on an easy hike from the campground. There was a loop which took us to tapestry arch, broken arch & sandstone arch. It was really strange- there were only a few people out there who we ran into, most of the time it was just us in the vast landscape of red rocks [View Full Entry]

Rupert & I hit the road today. Becca drives us to the RV center outside of Denver, and when we get there are informed that we did not call ahead to tell them when we would pick up the RV so have to wait a while until they can get it ready. Which ends up being fine for us, because we needed to head to the store anyway to get some groceries & supplies. Becca as usual is a great sport about it, and comes with us before she has to run back to work. I was sad to say goodbye [View Full Entry]

Becca & I woke up early to head into Denver for a meeting she had. I sat in a cafe & emailed/blogged the morning away, and then met her at noon. Her meeting was in the KMGH Channel 7 studios, and Carrie treated me to a tour of the studios. It was very exciting for me- the first TV studios I've been in. Carrie was great- told me all about how the station & the news operates, and didn't mind me asking lots of questions & taking loads of photos. I even got a few cheeky shots in front of the [View Full Entry]
