So the holiday has not got off to a great start. I'll spare you all the details but just a couple of hours after arriving at the hotel I spent most of the night in the bathroom with my head down the toilet. I felt just awful. Just getting down to hotel reception was a huge effort to ask for help from the Tour Guide. I felt so awful I was starting to panic if I wasn't well by 630am tomorrow how would I manage on a coach. It's at times like these you want to be tucked up in your own bed with some Heinz Tomato Soup! The Tour Operator suggested if I was so bad & couldn't make it to a Pharmacy to go to the hospital. By 11am I felt so ill, I ... read more

On sunday, Regina had to reach Chicago to board the airliner back to Amsterdam. Fortunately, Keith & Dru also had to drive to Chicago to reach their flight to Washington, and they offered to pick up Regina in Manitowoc, a small town on Lake Michigan on their path, and only 20 min flight from Oshkosh. Since most other planes in Oshkosh wanted to depart Sunday morning as well, we decided to leave very early, before the departure rush-hour traffic in Oshkosh started. And so just after sunrise, all camping gear was stowed in the plane, and we taxied towards the long runway. Not much traffic ahead, but many others following us - we were sent by tower to the left side of the runway, next one was behind us in the right side. No talking from ... read more

In the morning we drove back into the Rockies to hike to St Mary's glacier (not a real glacier - more like a permanent snow field - but still pretty exciting to see so much snow in July). Lots of people clambering on the ice and even a few people skiing down. We then drove back into town and had a quick lunch in a Mexican cafe nearby to warm us up for our visit to Texas. The afternoon was spent frantically trying to pack and looking through Peter's pathfinders photos from the early 1980s! Short bus trip to the airport, massively early due to flight nerves, only to find that the flight was delayed. Oh well, we got here eventually.... read more

We had a lovely lazy morning reading books in a park and then visited REI, a local outdoors store which has a climbing wall inside so you can test out their equipment. Matt, I bought you a little camping-related surprise, but don't get too excited... This afternoon we drove up to the top of Mount Evans (one of the 'fourteeners': mountains in the Rockies which are over 14,000ft). Amazing wildlife and amazing views (although pretty cold at the top). The summit is 14,263ft but I didn't get much altitude sickness at all so must be acclimatising! On our way back to Denver we stopped at Idaho Springs, a small mining town which still looks very 'wild west'. We had dinner at a popular restaurant called Beau Jos - see the photos for the 'Colorado pie' pizzas! ... read more

This morning woke and had breakfst whilst more closely admiring the apartment, and in particular the geniuine Picasso and Matisse on the wall. We then headed into town. First stop was the Tattered Cover bookshop, where we pend a while sniggering at the witchcraft/horoscope/spirituality section. A short free bus trip along 16th St mall took us to the Colorado State Capitol Building and surrounding plaza. A very kind tour guide asked if we would need a translator, which was thoughtful, I guess... We also visited Denver Public Library, one of the (if not the) largest free libraries in the USA. On the top floor we located the table used in 1997 G8 summit, still with place names for 'William Clinton' etc. A giant thunderstorm hit during the afternoon so we stayed indoors, and then headed out ... read more

On our last morning in Boulder we decided to cycle out along Boulder 'creek' (more like a raging torrent) to Boulder Canyon. Some pretty exciting cliffs, although I didn't really have much time to appreciate them since once again my lungs were complaining about the altitude. We then did some cycle-based souvenir shopping downtown (I bought some Colorado running socks to add to my new collection, which made me happy). We then got the bus to Denver where we were met by Peter Batty. He works in computing and was a Pathfinder a while ago; he and his parter Paula now live in an amazing apartment above a microbrewery. We played a bit with the robot dog which Rosie had told us about (she stayed with Peter on her trip) and had a power nap before ... read more

Last part of our trip :( Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park, Greeley Rodeo and Carnival, and Boulder. The last 5 days of our trip went out with a bang. We were missing Sydney and Liam and in the end, only 1256 miles straight home and one more night in a Walmart parking lot in Omaha Nebraska. For those who have never driven 26 hours in 2 days through eastern Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, its a wonderful drive as long as you enjoy only farms, corn, cows, 95 degrees and 55 miles an hour on average. Along with the expected 5,524 miles worth of events, we travelled through 2 oil changes, a new set of front tires, an upper radiator hose, an all expense paid trip in a tow truck 40 miles to the ... read more

I was sad this weekend, as I was missing Teresa's wedding back in the UK. It was nice when I got a call from Zoe on Skype from the Reception and I got to talk to several friends and the bride herself though. She had an amazing day which is all I could ask for. I was cheered up at a BBQ we were invited to at Jon's interns house. Nate and his girlfriend Maddie had about 12 of us over at their flat in downtown Denver and we had a great time. Everyone was really interesting and interested in us. We brought Churchy who spent the entire evening trying to hump another really cute dog - Milo. Most of the people were designers and charity workers so it was an interesting mix of people. After ... read more

I'm leaving for Vietnam on Tuesday. I've felt weird saying that the past few days. It looks even weirder in writing. If I had presented the idea of just up and going to Southeast Asia with no plans or itinerary to 17-year-old me, I would have thought I was insane. Why Asia? Going to Ireland, Mexico, and Cuba all made some sort of sense (although some were less thought-out than others). So really, why Asia? I think because it doesn't make sense. I've never been anywhere that I did not speak the language. I don't know much about it, and to be completely honest, the food isn't my favorite. I won't lie, the price is right. To stay there for 6 weeks is completely feasible on a teacher's salary. At least I hope so. Someone ... read more

Saturday 28th May 2011 The day started very early, the alarm set for 6am but we both up and showered by 5.30. A quick breakfast followed and we were off to Central station for the 45 minute trip by Skytrain to the airport. This train is run by private enterprise and it cost us nearly twice as much as the 3 hour trip from Nambour! No problems checking in, the Qantas check-in very helpful and booking our seats right through to Denver, although we do have to collect our bags in Dallas to go through Customs. Once in Sydney we made our way through the security and Customs etc and after getting our Duty Free stuff went straight to the plane.
