And the countdown begins...8 days until departure. Suitcase measured and just squeaks by. Chip is working on his German with his Rosetta Stone Course:) Dog boarding reserved. Next week we go into our final week of preparation musically and watch student presentations on our upcoming travels along with reconnaissance research on "competing" choirs. The ensemble is bonding and sounds better than ever! And by the way, there may be some choral flash mobs on the UNC campus this week... read more

We started out the CT at Waterton Canyon on Friday afternoon. We are spotting cars for as many of the segments that we can and plan to do weekend trips until we get to Breck. Were we plan on taking a few days rest with our good friends! Allow me to add a disclaimer.....WHEN YOU SPOT CARS...remember to bring your keys for the car at your final destination. Not that we forgot them....just a reminder :) So we had a two hour delay....got started at 2pm on Friday. 3 miles in I started to have foot problems. My toes were angry...good thing I hike with a Nurse. He whipped out the medical bag and flew into action. My feet were all tapped up and I began to start the trail again...This time my feet resembled something ... read more

The flight from the UK to Denver was delayed by a couple of hours, so rather than at 6 p.m., we landed at 8 (i.e. about 7 the next morning on my body clock). After the usual delay for US border stuff, I was then the only person taken out of the queue to have my luggage searched. (Something similar had happened when I left the US in 2007 – if not my face, there’s something suspicious about random facial hair that's not in the passport photo). When I finally took possession of my vehicle, I was in a hurry to get to bed, so I set off in one of those 1940s Chrysler retro-vans without trying to shut the window. The next morning I had to go the 30 miles back to the airport (still ... read more

New Year's Day and Bronco's Day!!!!!! Unfortuantely, before I went to the game, I had to do a load of washing. LAME!!! I figured I may as well have put the morning to good use though. We left around 1.30pm for the game. We took the light rail into the stadium, which took about 25 mins. The walk to the stadium was....different. Let's just say it's not like going to the MCG. Firstly, EVERYONE is a Bronco's fan. And they all love o be loud and cheer. God forbid they spotted a Chiefs' fan. Secondly, there are little stalls the whole way from the rail to the stadium (about 1.5km). Guys selling knock off Bronco's gear, home made t-shirts, and then a whole bunch of stands selling burritos, pistachios, water and drinks. Anyway, after we got ... read more

I've just decided that teaching is like tending a fire. I can recognize a glimmer, and know it is not yet a spark. I can see a spark and ignite a flame. I can fan a flame and start a fire. I can step back from the fire and watch it burn. I can add fuel to keep the fire burning. I can silently watch a steady burn and delight in the sparks that fly to light new fires. I can poke a burning log to send up new sparks. I can avoid the too-wet fuel that will dull the fire and the too-small twig that will be consumed before giving off heat. I can breathe life into a quietly smoldering timber. I can spot a dying ember and add fuel to spark it anew. I ... read more

Bit of a quiet day today, but still plenty to do, if that makes sense. Headed off around 11am to Golden. This is a historic little town, but it has one major attraction: Coors Brewery. It is the biggest single site brewery in the world (apparently), and it conducts a free audio tour. It takes you through the process of making beer, and what happens to all the left overs. They say the leftover mash goes towards cattle feed, and the leftover yeast is turned into cat food (yuck). The best part of the tour is you get to sample 3 full sized beers at the end, and you get to choose from about 10 different types. And its still all free! I tried a new brew they are trialling called Batch 19. I only had ... read more
