Greetings from Cambodia! After an excruciatingly long bus ride we made it here. It wasn't long physically, only about 12 hours, but it left at 12:30 at night, was filled with really annoying American bros looking to get wasted all over the world (including our bus), a screaming baby, a 3 hour stop at the border (and let's just say it's not the nicest border crossing ever), and then 5 hours of unpaved roads to Phenom Penh. But we made it. The hotel is nice and the pace is calmer here. The weather even decided to get nicer, it's not nearly as humid. Today we're going to the SIlver Temple (literally made of silver and jewels), and the Cambodian National Museum that has all the artifacts from the Ankor Wat area. Then we bus it up ... read more

OK, so I know it's been a while since I posted and it seems that all my adoring fans are clamoring for more. There's just been a lot going on, and well...I got lazy. Where I left off was leaving Phong Nha farmstay, which I forgot to mention something cool. The mother of Bich is this super old lady who is a decorated war hero for the North Vietnamese. She served as a medic in the most bombed valley in world history and when I got sick there she gave me some weird mystery pills and I got better almost instantly. One time she put a bunch of leaves and oils on a kids stomach and chanted and he got better too. Thought I'd throw that in. Also, we ate some very huge prawns at the ... read more

I know I was impatient to get out of Hue, but BOY I had no idea what was in store for me. Finally, we said goodbye to that hotel in Hue where we stayed for way too long and boarded a bus. This time, not a sleeper like the others, just a little converted minivan where we squeezed in with about 200 Vietnamese people. Before we left we had to sit in this weird bus stop, the first place where no one spoke English, where a woman was so entranced with our wavy brown hair that she just had to sneak up behind us and touch it. The ride was long and stinky. Vietnam is the land of a thousand smells. About 95% of them I could live without, but at one point I swear it ... read more

I've had enough time in Hue. I'm ready to move on to the next leg, staying on a ride paddy. There is a very top-secret farmstay that is not in the guidebooks run by an Aussie guy and his Vietnamese wife and I'm looking forward to a few days away from city life. There isn't much to do here anymore and frankly I'd like to be on the move again. We're supposed to take some ours of the DMZ and Ho Chi Minh trail as well as see one of the earth's biggest caves (think Planet Earth). We will take cooking classes and help them harvest the rice. It should all be very hot and humid, but really how many people get this opportunity? It was complete chance that we ran into a couple who stayed ... read more

I'm still in Hue, which we were thinking would be a drag. There's nothing particularly notable about this place other than it being the former Imperial City of Vietnam. Or so we thought. We stayed in a backpacker hostel the first night and met a few friends. The best part was that at some point in the night, it turned into a pirate party and anyone with pirate gear got free drinks from an Icelandic man. Thanks, TGS flag. We hung out with a Thai guy and one from Honk Kong, both of them studying law in London. There's been quite a bit of meeting ____ person from _____ place traveling for _____ months in SE Asia. It makes for good company though. The second day here (out of like 6) we went on a boat ... read more

Greetings from Hue, the Imperial City! This is the city where the emperor used to live. (Before all the colonists kicked him out). We just got in today, and will be taking tours tomorrow. So far we've been making friends along the way. Dean, an Australian traveling alone and Steph and Andy, a Brit and German respectively. It's very helpful when you meet others who speak English along the way. Not only do they have more information about the places you're going, but they provide some much needed company when it is so easy to feel like a stranger in a strange land. We've seen beautiful beaches so far, but now we're more in the mountains. The weather is cooler up here, but a bit more humid. The skies are pretty much constantly gray, but it's ... read more

I'm one week in to the trip, but it already feels like a month. The traveling itself to Vietnam seemed to take a week. We had no problems from Denver to SanFran. Sitting for 12 hours on the flight to Seoul from there was not as bad as I was expecting, but I was definitely anxious to get out of there by the end of it. The planes were pretty comfortable, and they had a lot of movies. Somehow on that flight, I lost my iPod, which I had just filled with all new music and games to entertain myself. It's been a little tough without it, but I'll survive. RIP Frankie the iPod. :( Seoul to Saigon was tough, at that point we just wanted to be done with the whole thing and be there. ... read more

I'm leaving for Vietnam on Tuesday. I've felt weird saying that the past few days. It looks even weirder in writing. If I had presented the idea of just up and going to Southeast Asia with no plans or itinerary to 17-year-old me, I would have thought I was insane. Why Asia? Going to Ireland, Mexico, and Cuba all made some sort of sense (although some were less thought-out than others). So really, why Asia? I think because it doesn't make sense. I've never been anywhere that I did not speak the language. I don't know much about it, and to be completely honest, the food isn't my favorite. I won't lie, the price is right. To stay there for 6 weeks is completely feasible on a teacher's salary. At least I hope so. Someone ... read more
