UntitledThis morning we went to the Universidad Veracruzana to hear two different lectures. The first was by Dr. Rodríguez who presented on “The Impact of Climate Change in Veracruz”. There were many different aspects presented on the enviornment and how much of a negative effect man has had on the area of Veracruz and the need for conservation. Interestingly most of the research is being done by the U.K. and other European countries. The second lecture was by Dr. Rivera on “Politics and Society in Contemporary Veracruz”. There was a lot information given out, which only touched on some of the issues and successes of Mexico. Some facts are: There are three main political parties in Mexico- PRD (left-wing party); PRI (old regime party); and PAN (right-wing conservative party) that currently holds presidency. Currently 11.5% of ... read more

We continued onto El Panchan, a crunchy, ecotourism hot spot next to the Palenque ruins. We stayed in our own little cabaña called Coco. Sooo we were at the Coco, Coco Cabaña. We saw lizards, chickens, turkeys and Trev almost had his finger bitten off by a spiny pig. Pretty intense. We also met people from around the world, including two Dutch dudes cycling across Central America. They had the brilliant idea of ordering a bottle of tequila for the five of us. Note to selves: If you agree to share a bottle of tequila, you're nooot gonna have a good time. The next day, we woke long after the jungle animals around us and had a later than expected start to see the Mayan ruins at Palenque National Park. I think my español skills are ... read more

North America » Mexico » Oaxaca » Puerto Escondido July 21st 2007

After a week in Distrito Federal and visiting city after city I thought it was time for a change of pace for a bit. I headed for the Oaxaca coast to check out some of the nicest beaches along Mexico's Pacific. In order to reach Puerto Escondido I decided to go to Acapulco first in order to break up what would have been a 12 hour bus ride. Upon arrival to Acapulco I must say I was extremely disappointed. It was this large city with all these high rise edificios, the beaches were small and crowded and the city was very dirty. I was not impressed!! No problem though, I hopped on the earliest bus to Puerto Escondido and found exactly what I was looking for!! I had such a great time in Puerto that I ... read more

Wanna get away...wanna really get away then continue on to Zipolite. Located just one hour from Puerto Escondido via the small town of Pochutla you will find the beauty and tranquility that you have been searching for. The photos may be impressive, but they really don't show the true beauty of this place. You must see for yourself! Upon arrival to Pochutla, we flagged down a taxi and headed to Lola's on Zipolite beach. It is always best to have some idea of how much a taxi is going to cost before you flag one day. The best thing to do is ask the locals on the streets or the people in the bus station or last resort confirm from a travel book, but at times the books are a bit outdated. It is best ... read more

Xalapa from CaliforniaFrom the city of Puebla we headed to Xalapa. (Pronounced HA-LA-PA) On our way we headed went to a childrenx00s orphanage for boys called IPODERAC. Its a great place which serves street children who are runaways or abonded. There are 60 boys that live there, and are sent to school, taught independents life skills, socializing skills, and technical skills. The boys range in age from 6 years-old to 18 years-old. All of them are there by their own choice, and the organization is privately funded. It as started 40 years ago by a woman that through various life tragedies realized the need for a place where children rejected by society could be given a chance. The orphanage also produces goods like cheese, and soap. In fact you can purchase their soaps through their website ... read more

We arrived in San Miguel de Allende on Sunday, 1 July 2007, and heaved a great sigh of relief. Before I get into anything let me tell you about the busses. The bus stations in San Luis de Potosi, Queretoro and San Miguel are very organized and clean. There are first class (these are the express which don't stop, get there faster and cost a bit more, they have TV showing, a/c and a toilet in the back), very comfortable and clean; and second class busses (which stop everywhere), have no a/c but are still okay. Both Upon entering you see all the counters for the different bus lines (and there are many). They have their schedules and prices on the boards behind them. We went there on Saturday to get our tickets but the ... read more

North America » Mexico » Oaxaca » Oaxaca July 20th 2007

Oaxaca is a smallish city situated well south of Mexico City. It lies in the mountains and is reached by good roads. The truck stayed in a trailer camp that was only half there. The Oaxaca Trailer Camp situated at the corner of Violetta and Navel Militare, has been half sold to some one who is building a very large building at that corner. Only the men’s bathroom was open and as follows the rule since arriving in Mexico… paper is not flushed down the toilet. Even number two paper is deposited in a basket… (some with plastic liners…many not…) that stands beside the toilet bowl … at times closer to ones face than comfortable. The place was as usual set up for RV’s so it was dusty and hard ground into which we had to ... read more

Sometimes you just don't know which way life is going to take you. The reason I say this is because certain events in my recent life led me to Mexico and to finally learning another language...something that I always wanted to do. I've tried many times unsuccessfully to pick up another language. But I'm actually getting somewhere with my Spanish and I'm completely stoked about it. I've had a few small conversations with people now which is brilliant. I'm lucky enough to be able to do 4 hours of one-on-one lessons a day with my teacher who is brilliant at explaining things. We have a good laugh in the process too which makes it so much easier. I've mentioned in earlier pages that the surfing here is world class so no need to go into ... read more

From Puebla, we continued our travels through the state of Oaxaca to the capital Oaxaca City, which is approx. 4 hours by bus. The bus travel has been fairly good to us, much better than the bus travel I experienced while traveling in other countries. We always opt for the first class buses though. Typically they are direct as well. Other classes of buses may stop for whoever they see on the side of the road. If you get motion sickness flying may be a better option because every trip is a curvy and winding road up, down and through the mountains. Our "student"id's have definitely been a bonus too. All summer our tickets are half price. Upon arrival to the Cristobal Colon bus terminal, we retrieved our bags and flagged down a taxi. Our ... read more

Our next stop of our travels was to the city of Puebla, which is approx. 2 hours outside of Mexico City. Upon arrival by bus, we took a cab to the apt. we would stay at during our time in Puebla. One of Carlos' friends offered her apt. while we were in Puebla. It was great to have our own apt., which was quite close to the city center, only a few dollar cab ride or a few pesos by local bus. Gracias a Viry!!! Our first day there, we decided to tour around on the tour bus due to the threatening weather. We rode on the top on the red double decker tour bus for the majority of the tour, but the last 30 minutes or so were spent down below inside the tour ... read more
