Having soaked up enough of the ruined culture of Mexico, our stop off in San Cristobal de las Casas gave us an opportunity to sample something a little more current. We arrived in time to catch part of the town's fourth Jazz Festival. A quartet led by Jaime Valle entertained us for a couple of hours with the first live music we've seen in a while. We're not counting the 'traditional Peruvian' bands that assaulted our ears with El Condor Pasa on repeat. From San Cristobal we headed to Oaxaca (5 points to everyone who can guess the pronunciation of that one) to take in another set of ruins at Monte Alban. Once again it was quite a different site from the previous Mayan temples. Not least because Oaxaca is at a slightly higher altitude, so ... read more

Our next day trip was to El Museo de las Tortugas/Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga in Mazunte. The turtle industry was banned in 1990. With the help of government action and community cooperation this former turtle processing factory has been converted into a center for the recovery of Oaxaca's Pacific Sea Turtles. All seven of Mexico's marine turtle species are represented here at the center. This was one of the highlights of the trip, especially for Carlos because of his love of turtles. Carlos has his own turtle here in Mexico. Her name is Cucalaloca and she just got a bigger home today. The center has tremendously helped the Sea Turtle population on the Oaxacan Coast. There were so many problems in the past with turtle poachers that now the since the government has stepped ... read more

What a perfect way to spend the weekend after midterms. We are now half way done with the program and after finishing two days of four hour long testing periods my whole group deserved a rest. This weekend in Guanajuato was a blast. My Sociology professor called this town the Disneyland of Mexico because it is so touristy and he was right, but that did not diminish the beauty and charm of this town. Granted, we could walk down the streets without worrying about cars, since the roads are mostly closed off to autos, all the while being serenaded by roving bands of singers dressed in black velvet outfits who we took to calling the ‘Capulets’. We stayed in a hotel for about six US Dollars per person per night and were able to spend ... read more

Ok guys, My last entry must have been really boring because nobody commented on it. I agree. I just reread it, and it IS really boring. I'll try to spice things up a bit. So this weekend there's a film festival in San Miguel and all of the shows are free to the public! The name of the festival is Expresion en Corto which pretty much sums it up. The films are all very short and it's all about expression and giving struggling filmmakers a place to show their work. On Saturday, I went with my other two housemates to Teatro Angela Peralta (the major theater in town) to see the documentary ¨Lost and Found in Mexico¨by Caren Cross. (Who, incidentally, we met the night before because her daughter runs a summer art camp for Amercian ... read more

The drive into Cancun was dismal. Did not recognize anything from 20years ago. It was definitely much bigger. As per usual we drove around in circles figuratively and actually. Finally made a stop before The Weary Traveller, which apparently was not our hostel. It was stated the name searched for was Mexico Hostels. Turns out they are one and the same. The entrance is tiny. The reception desk small. One TV in the entrance serves all the roomsof which there appear to be about ten. I occupied room four which had a terrific view of the washing machines. The towels cost 5pesos each and were decent; the pillow cases were long in coming; the sheets thin; the bathroom without shower curtain and stifling hot without AC; the bunk beds wobble enough to make one seasick ... read more

We arrived into Cancun late in the afternoon. The immigration processing went smoothly, we then picked up our hire car and we were on our way along Hwy 180 to Chichen Itza. We arrived at our hotel and quickly checked in and walked over to the ruins, as a light show is conducted at night. The show was great but unfortunately our Spanish is not so good so we didn't understand a word of the commentary! The following morning we walked back to tour the ruins. Chichen Itza is quite an imposing place with the large pyramid, El Castillo, the ball court and various other buildings. It was amazing to see such impressive buildings remain almost intact after over one thousand years. The intelligence of these people to design buildings that incorporate the Mayan calendar and ... read more

North America » Mexico » Oaxaca » Puerto Escondido July 22nd 2007

After our tour in the Valley of Oaxaca, it was time for some fun in the sun. We boarded our night bus at approx. 11:00 p.m. for a 9 hour trip to Puerto Escondido. Ironicially, our Italian friends were on the same bus and sitting right behind us. It was an uncomfortable night on the bus, but worth the night bus trip because we didn't want to spend money for a hotel that night nor travel during the day. The night buses are safe for travel as well. Most of the travel books warn against night travel because of past problems, but the security measures in place are good enough for us and we feel safe enough to travel. Entering the gate you have to clear through a metal detector, and typically the guys are ... read more

Ok, I've been really bad lately at keeping my blog updated I know. However I am travelling remote places on the Pacific coast of Mexico. I will update photos at a later date. I wish I could share some of the photos with you now as I am having an excellent time here. Different but an experience to say the least. Started in Puerto Vallerta (PV) which is a tourist destination for the Gringos (Americans) for a few days and then headed North to Sayalita which was gorgeous. No surf there though so after hooking up with Tom (English but not his fault) and Nate (crazy american dude that lives a simple life with his machette and coconuts) we went to San Blas. Got back into surfing there and eaten alive by bugs. I wasn't enjoying ... read more

Empezo a llover muy fuerte ... read more

HIGHLIGHTS: Santa Maria del Tule Teotitlan del Valle Mitla Hierve el Agua Fabrica de Mezcal The city of Oaxaca is loaded with tourist agencies and it really doesn't matter which one you sign up with because they all typically offer the same trips and prices. Carlos was charming enough that we paid less for our trip than the others did. In addition to the same trips and prices, all tours meet up in the morning and typically travel in a caravan. We were picked up at 10:00 a.m. in a white Suburban truck., which is a very comfortable ride in Mexico Two ladies from Germany had already been picked up and it seemed it was just going to be the four of us. Our first stop was to Santa Maria del Tule. You can read the ... read more
