North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Cancun July 25th 2007

I´ve had a couple of responses from people reassuring me because I said I was scared. I´d like to clarify that this refers to the heat only and it is much cooler this morning. There was a thunder storm in the night and it is less humid although I´m sure it will heat up again. It´s 10.17 absolutely fine so far so I´m hoping it will stay the same. I´ll get used to it anyway. I´m not scared about the actual trip, rather I am quite excited and have met some nice people. Rest at ease that I am happy and here in Cancun, I am also very safe and comfortable. I am, however, hungry.... read more

Monte Alban, one of the most spectucular ruined cities among Mesoamerica, is located just outside of Oaxaca City. We took at bus from a local hotel in Oaxaca City with many other tourists, which was the most economical way. It was a 20 minute ride up and over the mountains on a one-lane curvy road. We are still not sure how other buses passed us coming from the other direction. Upon arrival to Monte Alban around 10:00 a.m.the fog was quite thick, but little by little the fog lifted and the sky opened up a bit. We were lucky that we started as early as we did because by the time we finished around 12:30 p.m. there was a severe downpour of rain. Monte Alban was known in ancient times by its Zapotec name, Danni ... read more

Hey all, welcome to our first official travel blog from Mexico!!! You´ll be glad to hear that we arrived safe and sound in Mexico City last night at 2am, after an epic journey of 33 hours, and a lengthy delay courtesy of Delta Airlines in New York! Not impressed. First impressions It certainly is the biggest city in the world. The streets are bustling with traders selling you anything from thongs to shoes laces, to wrestling masks. Its hot, its muggy but it is a beautiful place.... read more

North America » Mexico » Oaxaca » Huatulco July 24th 2007

Our last stop on the Oaxacan Coast was to Las Bahias de Hautulco. Las Bahias de Huaulco is Mexico's newest big coastal development project. This stretch of coast had just one small fishing village until the 1980's, but now within its nine bays, it is thriving. It seems the Mexican government has learned from its other developments on the coasts and this, if all goes according to plan, will be both a tourist and ecological paradise, in addition to employing thousands of local people, when complete by 2020. With the help of Carlos' cousin, Paola, once again, we were fortunate enough again to be able to stay at Las Brisas located in Bahia Tangolunda with a huge discount. Las Brisas is the former Club Med, so you can expect the same excellence from this place. The ... read more

VeracruzThis morning we went to the fortress of San Juan de Ulúa in the port of Veracruz. It was an old Spanish command post situated on the port entrance. When it was used, it served as a home to presidents, military headquarters and prison. Much of the fortress was constructed with coral rock and has bridges that connect different areas. It reminded me of a fortress from 'The Pirates of the Caribbean'. From there we went to a public middle school where we met with teachers and students. It was a great time to tour the school, see it facilities, and learn about a segment of the school system. The best part was that we went to lunch in a city called Boca del Rio, with the teachers and students, and really had chance to talk ... read more

After an incredible and very relaxing time on the coast, we headed back to Oaxaca for a few days. Our best option was to travel during the day because a storm had rolled in, which lasted for a few days. Once again, our timing was perfect as everyday was perfect on the coast for us. It was quite an interesting journey back to Oaxaca though. It was suppose to be a more direct route, meaning not as curvy, but I don't think there are any less curvy routes in Mexico. You have to give these bus drivers a lot of credit in Mexico too, especially when it rains. Not only do they have to navigate the bus through the mountainous terrain, but when it rains it is like an obstacle course with either animals or ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida July 23rd 2007

Catch up time again! I take back everything I've said about the rain in Merida just being big fat drops. It has been pouring here for two weeks. Just an hour or so a day, but sometimes God is PISSED and the thunder and lightening is frightening! Well, to me anyway. No, y'all that have worked with me, no blankie to hide under and you sure can't write procedures with your eyes closed. Phone call update: I've had a couple of friends tell me that nothing shows up on their bill by dialing my Orange, Texas cell number. On my side, the roaming is just under a dollar a minute and I don't mind paying that at all to hear from y'all. Haven't figured out the Mexican cell phone per call yet, but they go fast ... read more

North America » Mexico » Oaxaca » Mazunte July 23rd 2007

We took a day trip to Mazunte, which is only 1 mile/ .62 km from Zipolite. We simple got lost in its beauty though. Our main objective for visiting Mazunte was for the Turtle Museum, which will be the next entry. We won't bore you with the all of the details in this entry. You can simply view the photos and read the captions to get a taste of our experience. We had a late breakfast early lunch of our favorite chiliquilas and fruit with a pitcher of agua de limon and then spent the day just relaxing on the beach. Only a short time of it was spent in the sun because it was so strong. We typically followed the lead of the locals and since they were not in the sun then it ... read more

North America » Mexico » Oaxaca » Puerto Escondido July 23rd 2007

This entry is mainly for surfers...tune out if this one doesn't interest you :) Do you want the good part or the bad part first? OK, we'll start with the bad part. Firstly, Mexican food can be very good but I admit it can, shall we say, unsettle the constitution. Secondly, it has been raining every other day and when it does, it's a truly tropical experience. It comes down hard and doesn't stop until the heavy clouds are empty. Ordinarily I'd consider this blissfull, but here the rain washes everything from the streets straight into the sea. It just so happens that you get these perfect offshore winds during and especially after the rain. So naturally, everyone hits the break after a storm. The downside here is if any water gets in your ears...you ... read more

VeracruzToday was a slower day than usual. After beakfast we headed to the Zempoala's archeological site to see some very interresting ruins. They were not as large as other sites, but still great to see. For one reason or another, we were not allowed to climb on the ruins as you are in other places. Then we went to Chachalacas beach to walk, eat and swim on the beach. Nice to day to reflect on our trip so far.
