Wanna get away...wanna really get away then continue on to Zipolite. Located just one hour from Puerto Escondido via the small town of Pochutla you will find the beauty and tranquility that you have been searching for. The photos may be impressive, but they really don't show the true beauty of this place. You must see for yourself!
Upon arrival to Pochutla, we flagged down a taxi and headed to Lola's on Zipolite beach. It is always best to have some idea of how much a taxi is going to cost before you flag one day. The best thing to do is ask the locals on the streets or the people in the bus station or last resort confirm from a travel book, but at times the books are a bit outdated. It is best to confirm the price you want to pay with your driver before agreeing. There are no meters here in Mexico so you have to make it effort it you want to pay the legit fare. If you think the fare is to high, you can always ask for a lower fare as well
Lola's was a bargain, only $20 US dollars/$200 pesos per
night with a view of a nearby cove, the ocean and the entire beach, hammocks on the beach and even hot water. Could it get any better? Again, here the waves were quite fierce, but with the right timing of the waves you can make it past the breakers and relax in the ocean.
You can try to bargain for anything and everything here in Mexico. If you act like it is too expensive and you walk away most times they will give you the lower price...they need the business. At times they will say ,no, because it's as low as they can go and you can believe them. We didn't have to try to bargain for this hotel because the books both said it was much more expensive.
This 1.5 km beach was lined with small beach hotels, restaurants and bars. Nothing over 2 stories was to be found on the beachfront. Most of the hotels, restaurants and bars have thatched roofs and are all open-air. The ocean front restaurants on this coast are called palapa's. Everything was just magical here...from the sun and the sand to the crashing waves onto the shore.
We liked this
place much more than Puerto Escondido. Puerto Escondido is beautiful as well, but this place was magical. We walked the beach every day and night, stopping along at the different palapa restaurants or bars. We found our favorite two places at the end of the beach: El Alquimista and Shambhala Posada.
El Alquimista is the best place on the beach...just check out the website: www.el-alquimista.com Plus, the photos are much better than what I have and really show the magic and beauty of this beach. If you are planning to go to Zipolite this is the place you want to stay. For a cabana on the beach steps from the ocean, it is only approx. $50 US dollars per night for 2 people. Needless to stay, we spent a great deal of time here from sunning in the morning, to beers and lunch in the afternoon and ending the evening with a candlelight dinner on the beach.
Our other hotel that we stayed in was literally next door perched on a mountain. We had a view of the entire Zipolite beach and coastline. What a way to start your day!!! Shambhala Posado is another must see place and
you should check out the website to see the magic of this place: www.advantagemexico.com/shambhala Check out the history section of the website as well. It is a wonderful and heartfelt story!
While this isn't know for world class surfing like Puerto Escondido, the waves are still just as powerful and everyday morning, afternoon and into the night, there were surfers. In addidtion to the surfers, there were a number of fisherman out in the ocean catching our lunch and dinner.
With the mountains and the jungle at the backdrop of the coast, it is a wildlife haven. All day long Carlos made friends with the crabs in the sea, lizards and iguanas on the shore and in the rocks and he even tried to save one turtle, but it was already dead as it washed up on the shore.
The days just came and went here, but we knew our time to leave was approaching. It was hard to leave, but we knew how lucky we were to have been able to find this magical place.
