Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

It. is. COLD. This month has been a bit ridiculous. Funny, because originally I dreaded coming back to Montreal a little bit, because class just never seemed to be enough to fill up the hours. That, I will most adamantly admit, was dead wrong. Getting the apartment set up, hosting six people, catching up with what seems to be an endless stream of old friends (I still haven't seen everyone), dealing with various dramas, arranging classes, attending classes, the what is an actual endless stream of work: readings, papers, my upcoming midterm (which, coincidentally, is two days after AUC [View Full Entry]

After a short rest yesterday, we took a cab to dinner at the famous Globe Cafe. When we arrived at 6pm, we were the only ones there. Our lovely waitress, Karolyne said most people dine around 7 or 8pm. We started with some French champagne to go with our oysters. They were small, sweet, and very flavorful. We followed that with our main dishes. Sheri had the cod, which was excellent. But I had the duck breast and orange-braised fennel, which might have been the best duck I have had in about ten years. Wow. To top it off, Karolyne suugested [View Full Entry]

Being back sucks much more than expected. Perhaps my expectations were too high? I'm really not wallowing; I'm just stating a fact. However, I've been kept very busy moving in, seeing people, and having hordes of visitors, which has been great. Stacey [View Full Entry]

Waw! Times flies and again, I neglected my blog... So here is the story of the last few weeks, but first, I wish you a happy 2009 with a lot of happy adventures! Mid-December, I was still in Goa, and although I could hear the Christmas music, it really didn't feel like Christmas to me. My trip to Africa was cancelled, and I really had no plans for the rest of the winter, and even though part of me still wanted to be in India, I thought about doing something special for my family for Christmas... I changed my tickets and [View Full Entry]

Hello Again Our last blog was about our first stop on this trip, the city of Boston. We really enjoyed Boston but were itching to get back into Canada, our home for the year back in 2007. Our point of entry in to Canada would be Montreal (well just below it). Montreal is close enough to Boston that its not really worth flying but unfortunately doesn’t have direct access via rail. So that means that the only option is road and not wanting to rent a car in the wintery conditions typical in these parts, it meant we would have to [View Full Entry]

Time has flown since our last trip in September. And while we haven't been traveling, we have both making observations about our surroundings like any good travelers would. Most of our observations have centred around the change of the seasons and the onset of winter. $*#%^!! may be the most common statement as of late. It may have something to do with the onset of winter. You see, it is the Aussie's first real winter, and unfortunately for him, it has been off to a rather cold start. So as the Canuk, it has been my job to get him out [View Full Entry]

Merci de nous avoir suivi ... La suite promet, on vous tient au courant! Nous vous souhaitons pour l'année 2009 de traverser le miroir ... [View Full Entry]
