Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

stulpje 2

I sat through another hellish day in a snowglobe-Montreal, nursing another hangover, recounting my adventures and scratching away glozen days from calender, plotting my final weeks at school and my escape into summer. I put on a play last night--Something I had written in my freshmen year for a girl I had a crush on (naturally, "she couldn't make it")- -A plucky romantic comedy in one act from the early days of my male-female dialogical abstractions phase (still ongoing if you haven't noticed). And I have been too preoccupied with it's preparations to spare some thought to phrasing [View Full Entry]

It is finally time to say au revoir to Montreal. I have loved the city and am sad to leave it behind. On Valentine's Day when I got back from San Francisco, we went to the Opera to see Barber of Seville and sat in a posh box! Since then we have watched a lunar eclipse from a candlelit car, been to a Montreal Canadiens Hockey game, out for an amazing dinner at La Montee de Lait (10 courses!) and to a Quebecois folk music bar. I´m glad I got a chance to listen to some Quebecois music - its amazing [View Full Entry]

Montreal is an island and a city. The Metro is well situated and all 68 stations are beautifully presented with art work in them all. The Metro was completed in 1966 in time for Expo 67 and the centenary of Canadian Confederation. The Olympic site from 1976 is still as breathtaking as ever. The Velodrome has been turned into a Biosphere where you can see and smell penguins ... among other things. In the downtown area can be found a quarter sized replica of Notre Dame. I have only visited this once ...way back when I started to come to Montreal [View Full Entry]

For those of you too lazy to read shit in the heading, I've put almost all my entries private (due to various reasons)...just email or subscribe and ill get you on the list of people who can check out all my shitty writing. ----- In this edition of Spring Training, I will formally introduce the pitchers (pitchers and catchers reported for spring training in the MLB last week, so this seems like the perfect time). Note, none of these are starting pitchers, they all happen to fall under four categories: prospects, failed prospects, retirees and notable pitchers who've helped me in [View Full Entry]

Probably, the most bizarre thing about the last conclusory episode of Volume II of "Memoirs of a Gaijin" is that it lacked a conlusion. Unlike the year before there was no grand sweeping statements to be found to summarize the learning of the adventure, point towards the future and justify my ways to man. Commentary was almost absent entirely. My actions were stated, as barely as I found myself able, and then I left. That was all. Part of the reason for this was, I myself was never able to come to a conclusion as to what exactly it was I [View Full Entry]

Spring Training
Spring Training
Its coming...
Spring is around the corner! And guess what that means…spring training! After an amazing summer, I crashed and burned down the summer homestretch to find myself out of playoff contention. However, though I did ultimately collapse on the surface, dig deeper and you realize I got a loaded farm system with crazy prospects. So this is the championship year, fellows. Last summer of university, and I gots to make it count. To get you up to speed from when I came back from Japan: After easily the best summer of my life, I was looking at another cold (literally and figuratively) [View Full Entry]
