Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

I have found my winter sport. I left Australia all excited to go to Canada, with dreams and plans of learning how to be the world's best skier/snowboarder/any type of winter sports person. I mean, being so close to snow and everything, you kind of just have to do it. No wasted opportunities, et cetera, et cetera. Unfortunately, over the last few weeks I have come to the painful sad and disappointing realisation that I am just not cut out for winter sports, for a number of reasons. One. I hate the stupid shoes. Ice skating, skiing, it doesn't matter, they [View Full Entry]

I have been updating my blog a lot recently and instead of emailing every time I waited until a large chunk was done. There are still some holes that need filling up from my time in Amsterdam but I really wanted to get the pictures from New Orleans up. As a note, you may notice that the name on the blog is now Cornelius Star instead of Seth A____. This is because potential employers, students, and coworkers have access to the net so to protect myself and friends I have changed the name to Cornelius Star. Enjoy!! death by icicle

North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal
Today I almost suffered a sudden death by icicle. I was walking to my exam, happily minding my own business - despite what appeared, and still appears, to be yet another snow storm building up... When suddenly a gush of wind howled past me, the fragilely hung icicles collapsing from the roof tops and hurtling down at unforseeable speeds to the concrete pathway on which I was meandering. It is amazing how such a vicious act of nature sounds like nothing more than tinkling glass as it finally connects with the grey pavement below. Perhaps it is buffered by the foot [View Full Entry]

Montreal We arrvied in Montreal after a 5 hour train journey through snow covered country side. After a solid mission with all our stuff we arrived at our hotel. It was very cutie, but kinda situated in the red light area and was above a sex shop... turns out it had hourly rates... :o) It was probably about -15 or -20 when we got there. Our first day in Montreal was really sunny, and we spent all day walking around checking out the sights, including cruising up to the top of Mont Royal. It was interesting cos there were tonnes of [View Full Entry]

So I suppose the hardest thing about writing a blog after a month of having not is that monumental feeling of not being able to cope updating an entire month's worth of activities, which is more or less what has kept me from writing up until now. In which case I will start at the very end, Julie Andrews forgot to mention that it was also a very good place to start. My friend Dave from Sydney has been staying with me for the last week, after sleeping on people's floors for a few weeks throughout the States (he has upgraded [View Full Entry]

I thought my afternoon out at a University Lumberjack competition probably deserved an entry of its own because it is one of the most uniquely Canadian things I have so far witnessed. We drove out to part of the McGill campus just outside of the main city to see the 'woodsman' events contested by various universities in Eastern Canada and North Eastern US. The log chopping, log sawing, log throwing and log climbing events were joined by axe throwing, chainsawing, snow shoe running and even water boiling. The teams seemed to take it all quite seriously and we had to refrain [View Full Entry]

One of the things I love about myself is my unflinching optimism, and complete refusal to face proven fact and reality. I wouldn't say it's my favourite thing, but it's certainly up there - around about the same level as what I would refer to as my "working knowledge of reasonable personal hygeine." Praise indeed... allow me to explain. Having woken up at 2am in Washington DC, my first train staggered into New York Penn Station at about 6.45am... where upon I moved my caboodle into the station. Obviously by this time, I was planning for the day, but remarkably was [View Full Entry]

After a week of intense training in Washington DC, I flew directly to Montreal. I met up with some friends from Ottawa who came to support me as I shared about my upcoming trip to Rwanda. My Montreal crew organized a great dinner and we enjoyed some dancing later that night. Sunday was spent sharing at two churches in Montreal. It was very humbling to see how interested people, complete strangers, were in the work I would be doing. [View Full Entry]

Well before we went to Montreal, we knew that people in the state of Quebec spoke French, but we didn't think it was the primary language! I have never before been to a country where you can hop on a bus, and get out in that same country, only to find you now don't have a clue what anyone is saying. Fortunately everyone could also speak English, so we managed to get by. We arrived late into the evening, and the first thing that struck us about Montreal was A COLD WIND! We Glaswegians are used to a bit of a [View Full Entry]
