Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

My Indian adventure had begun before I'd even expected it to... I arrived at the airport in Montreal having slept only 2 hours the night before. It was a fairly nice day when I arrived, but only about 30 minutes before my flight, a thick fog rolled in. The flight was delayed indefinitely ... then cancelled. In this day and age, I didn't think something as innocent as fog could cripple an airport. Apparently this only happens once every 5 years or so. (a sign?) Delta helped rebook my flights for the next day with 2 other airlines. However, someone at [View Full Entry]

I spent Christmas and New Year with Jon's family here in Montreal and up in Mont Tremblant. We went to Cirque du Soleil in Montreal and did some of the sights before spending Christmas itself in a chalet in Mont Tremblant. Annoyingly it rained on our way up to Tremblant so some of the excellent conditions were spoilt slightly but we got more snow as the week went on and had fun getting skiing lessons from Jon and Bex. I showed them the sights and the Caribou and there waas plent of dancing on the bar in ski boots from all [View Full Entry]

Skiing in Mont Tremblant is going brilliantly. The snow storms over the last 3 weekends were good news for us because it means that the season has started off really well and there is plenty of fresh snow. They say it is the most snow they have had before Christmas in 30 years. Guess I picked a good season to come :) In fact it has just started snowing heavily again this morning. Yesterday was amazing - blue skies, fresh snow and my first exposure to a -20 degree wind chill. Pretty damn cold on the chair lifts... Staying at the hostel [View Full Entry]

I am standing outside theBonaventure metro station on my way to the train station.
It is 3:37 am on Monday December 17th, and just made it home back from Mtl. What a long ride home!!! My train was delayed 4 hrs due to the nasty winter storm that hit central and eastern Canada today. Mtl had complete white-out conditions today when I took the bus to Bonaventure Terminal. So I told my siblings not to bother dropping me off at the train station because it was useless. I am glad that they agreed. So from mum's place I took the 121 bus to the Cote Vertu metro station. Once I was there, it was ok. [View Full Entry]

So, on Friday morning, I headed to the airport to go from NYC to Montreal. (For some reason, the way I had booked the flights, I had a stopover in Philly...which took extra time, but whatever, I think it was cheaper.) When I got there around 5 pm it was SNOWING and I was incredibly excited. Of course, this meant it took extra time to get into Montreal, but it looked so beautiful I didn't really care. Also, I was amazed upon landing and realizing that this was literally the first time I have ever been to a country where there [View Full Entry]

Montreal is cold....

North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal
I arrived in Montreal on Monday 19th and have spent the week acclimatising to the cold and seeing the city in very different circumstances to the last time i was here. On Tuesday we woke up to the first proper snow of the year and it hasn't really stopped since! Unfortunately I'm not really prepared for the weather yet and my boots are already leaking so my feet turn into blocks of ice whenever we walk anywhere Apart from a bit of shopping, cinema and the odd cheeky karaoke night (Jon's friends must have been under strict instructions to welcome me [View Full Entry]

Hello to you all, writing from a very sunny and summer warm San Francisco ! Started the travelling Monday 2 weeks ago by being picked up at the airport in Montreal and heading for a cottage at Lake Cameron, with my ex-colleagues from Cirque - Patrick, Nathalie and their now 11 month old son Olivier. The place was super relaxing and had a great location by the lake. We went for some trips around the area (great autumn colours of the leaves !) and as Nat & Pat are looking into opening up a Spa in the area we went to [View Full Entry]
