Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

We arrived in Montreal at 6.30am after a 7 hour overnight Greyhound from Boston. The journey involved little sleep, including everyone getting off with their luggage at the boarder for customs at 4.30 in the morning. The driver also left the luggage compartment door open and we were the only ones to spot it before all of the cases were lost somewhere between America and Canada. I had to go down and tell him and all he said was 'Oh Yeah!" Got to hostel at 7am only to be told that we could not check in untill 12.30, so had [View Full Entry]

The best part of living in Toronto is that you are only a few hours from the best Canadian city, or so I think. Montreal is Canada's bit of European culture. It's only a 5 hour drive from Toronto yet so different. The coolest part about this city is that it's an island located just by the mouth of the St. Lawrence river. Although it is located in Canada's French province, knowing Francais is not a necessity since everyone speaks English on the streets and in the stores but ONLY in Montreal (since most of the residents are immigrants, students or [View Full Entry]

much smaller than the other one, but still nice!
Today we ventured out to explore Old Montreal and the port area. This was a few blocks walk from our hotel, but it was a nice day, not too hot or cold. This area of town is pretty, however I have to admit, not nearly as pretty as Quebec. But maybe I should try not to compare! The area is full of pretty old buildings and the port area is a mixture of new and old. The streets are pretty quiet as well, which makes wandering around a breeze. The one really stellar part of Montreal, from the small part [View Full Entry]

Ahoj!!! So since I wrote here last time many things changed. But when was it... well, Wednesday evening, 11th of July. That night I was with Ed and Kris again. We went for really good dinner to a Turkish restaurant, where we joked with a waiter from Bulgaria. It was fun and the food was great. Little bit expansive, but it was all right. Than we went home and I could stay there in their place that night, because their flatmate wasn't at home. I did my journal late in the evening so sorry for the mistakes I definitely did:) [View Full Entry]

Today we finished the last of our admin and we are set to depart early tomorrow morning. This is our last day in Canada after arriving on 17 March 2006. It has been a wonderful 16 months and we have enjoyed it immensely. The work has been very rewarding for Damien and Suzi has been very productive through part time work and study. All the while we experienced as much of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and North America as we could. Now it is time for a different journey and some new experiences. If it is as enjoyable as our time here [View Full Entry]

We had the rental furniture collected today and the carpet cleaner cleaned the carpets in the basement and the kitchen/dining area. Damien also sold the car, although the price wasn't as much as we had hoped. The price of an overseas posting unfortunately! [View Full Entry]

Today the removalists arrived and packed up all our stuff (too much of it!) into boxes and loaded it into a shipping container bound for Australia. They showed us how it is sealed and sent it on its way. We thought they would pack everything on the Monday and load it into the container on the Tuesday, but they got everything done in one day. We then had farewell drinks with our friends Mike and Elizabeth who presented us with t-shirts from the days of the Montreal Expos baseball team - something to treasure, especially since they moved to Washington before [View Full Entry]

UntitledJuly 8th- This morning we were fortunate to meet with the author of 'The Hockey Sweater' Roch Carrier. He has not only written some of the most important literature he is quoted on the Canadian $5 dollar bill. He gave a great talk on culture and identity in Canada and joined us for lunch to continue our discussion. After lunch a few of us climbed Mont Real (Royal Mountain), the mountain which the city is named after. It was a great hike and at the end we found a park with hundreds of people sitting around listening to drummers and [View Full Entry]

UntitledAfter breakfast we took a tour of Old Montreal where we learned the history of a very and architecture of the city. We then had lunch and headed straight to a meeting with local teachers. The meeting was great and a lot of information was shared about the school systems in Montreal. Since Montreal is in the Province of Quebec the school system is the same as Quebec City with the French school system and the English school system. After dinner we had dinner headed straight for the Montreal Jazz Festival. The Jazz Festival is an incredible music ev [View Full Entry]
