Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Montreal II

North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal
So the last place I updated about was Halifax, which I actually visited before Quebes City. The rest of Quebec City I pretty much stayed in a shitty mood, I couldn’t shake it. I guess that happens sometimes. Nothing really impressed me, and it kept raining. It’s a shame, because everyone else who goes there absolutely loves it. Maybe I should go there again in my two years here. After Quebec City it was back to Montreal for the Osheaga Festival. Lisa was going to be there and decided to go to the festival too, so I was excited to see [View Full Entry]

Just after the publication of my last entry I noticed that there is one thing I hadn't taken into consideration: That my "Swedish" siblings Ann-Christine and Mikael are not able to read what I'm writing about. So I have decided to write in English this time, and I'll see how it goes. From now on, some entries might be in English, some in German. I hope that my dear German friends will understand everything, and I apologise in advance for any "funky" grammatical or syntactical errors :-). I'm too much into my English-German-French mixture right now .... The days after my [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

Montreal has a lot of things going for it, the scenery, the old town and a lot of French speaking people. Which is a little strange at first as you're in Canada not France. But it is a nice touch to walk into a shop and be greeted with bonjour hello, as they have an each way bet as to how you're going to answer them back, and there are some shops you just want to keep walking in and out of to hear the accent over and over again. One of the beautiful things about Quebec City though is that [View Full Entry]

Montreal

So we arrived in Montreal at 10:30 on Monday. We were going to attempt to catch the train to the hostel, but with my massive suitcase, shoulder bag, laptop bag & handbag, and Vanessa’s TWO massive suitcases, we didn’t like our chances. We thought a taxi might be the best way to go. Only the taxis didn’t want to take us either, so we had to get a taxi each. My taxi driver was alright, but did the dodgy and didn’t put the meter on for the ride. Vanessa’s driver was less than pleasant. Vanessa had to ride in the back [View Full Entry]

Ah, Montreal. The city that I call home when I travel. We're back in Montreal for the summer, and we're loving it! While Dave and I were running a "chase point" or checkpoint for the Montreal City Chase, we were distracted by a man wearing a clown wig riding on a kid's scooter, chased by a blue bus full of drunk guys, two of which were hanging out of the overhead emergency exit, throwing water balloons at the clown. Meanwhile, the cockroaches and the snakes at our checkpoint wanted to know what the commotion was about. As t [View Full Entry]

Thursday July 17, 2008 - Sunday July 20, 2008 <<Unfortunately, we didn’t take a lot of photos while in Montreal. Seemed the camera always got left behind in the hotel room.>> So Tegan and I headed up to Canada to attend Brian and Ghislaine’s wedding in Montreal. We spent 3 nights in Montreal and 2 nights in Quebec City. What follows is a brief description about our time in each city. Overall I really enjoyed the feel of Montreal. Festivals aplenty, the streets seemed very alive despite the unpredictable showers. A very friendly feel, I don’t [View Full Entry]

Heading to Montreal from Newport, Rhode Island. Approaching the coast of Nova Scotia.
It’s hard to believe how fast time goes living and working on such a ‘small’ boat! Since my last blog, we’ve sailed into Canada and spent a week in Montreal, climbed a few hundred feet in elevation to the fresh waters of Lake Ontario via the St. Lawerence Seaway Lock system, glanced at Quebec City’s mighty castle, pulled along side Pier 4 in downtown Toronto, and visited Niagara Falls. Each passing day has included new lessons learned, new routines, new scenery and landscapes, new pilots, and the constant wonder of what we’re going to see next. We sail [View Full Entry]
