Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

[View Full Entry]

Wow, we’ve made it Montreal and the worst concept of immigration I have encountered in all my travel years. With no facility for Canadians for an express lane made for a long queue and as usual I wasn’t feeling very flash with a mighty headache that was possibly the result of watching movies for nearly 7 hours on the flight. Anyway we split up at the immigration desks and after a slight but not ruthless grilling I was through in a matter of minutes. Jay must have looked more dubious than I as he was grilled and asked to product documentation [View Full Entry]

Hallo!

Montreal as a city has a flavour that I haven’t experienced anywhere else I have travelled. It seems like one of the most European-esque cities in Canada, probably even North America, but it also has that urban concrete jungle feel too it that is common in Canadian cities. I’ve been to Montreal plenty of times, but usually in big groups with school or my dance group. This time it was just my sister, our cousin and I. Our cousin had come from Poland this summer and had been to Canada many times but never outside of Toronto. With Greyhound tickets so [View Full Entry]

•Montreal: Oooooh....SO great to have beer and pizza waiting for you after a long and stressful drive (TO and Montreal in the same day - shudder). And not just any pizza - super delicious pizza from a private little mom & pop’s place and drool-worthy black currant beer (by Montreal’s Ephémère microbrewery) - thank you, Chris!! Ah yes, it’s all about the Montreal eats and sights - thanks for giving us the tour, Chris - and for driving - thank the gods we didn’t have to deal with Montreal traffic! The second day in Montreal found us consuming [View Full Entry]

Salut! Comme talle vous? We're in North America, just an hour away from the US... Americans joke about Canada being "America's Hat", or "America Junior", but at least in Montreal, it feels worlds away. Everything's in French, everyone seems to be out on the street taking leisurely brunch-dinner-drinks (bars and restaurants seemed full at all hours of the day), and people prefer to greet you with bonjour, only grudgingly switching to English if there's no alternative (they're not mean-hearted about it though like in my experiences in France). In short, this feels like Europe, [View Full Entry]

We took the VIA rail train from Toronto to Montreal on Tuesday afternoon, August 18th. The ride was 5 hours long, but we got no sleep as the train was quite bumpy. We arrived after nightfall and walked the 10 blocks to our previously-booked hotel in downtown Montreal. By this time, the realization that we had taken too much has definitely hit as we were having a hard time lugging our laptops and our fully-packed backpacks. Our plan was to make it to Newfoundland and leave our laptops and other "we-thought-it-might-need-it" stuff with my parents, and not take it with us [View Full Entry]
