Just a little more than two weeks to go before I head off to East Africa. I've picked up my ticket and I have all my shots, so now it's time to start packing! I've got a list in progress and it's coming along slowly, but how do you really manage to fit everything into one backpack for 2 months??? I'm going to be trying out something new this time when I travel. Instead of sending off mass e-mails to everyone regularly I'm going to try out this internet blogging site. Using this site will allow me to post updates and pictures that everyone can access. There's a feature that will allow you to sign up to get a message when I post anything new, so it will be just like me sending e-mails but you ... read more

Well here we are .. June already. Exactly 18 days till I leave. I know this blog is for the trip and not the "Karla Show" (however -- how great would that be eh! haha just kidding) but i thought i'd get this travelblog up and running before I leave because using a computer at an internet cafe to try to figure out how this all works does not sound very appealing. so --- i think i'm ALMOST ready for this. I still can't believe it's happening! :) i've been reading all about europe and the different places to go in each country -- maybe too much.. hmm. As the plan goes thus far .. I'll be leaving Canada on the 18th of June and arriving in London, England on the 19th in the morning and ... read more

The last time I was in Ottawa, I was in high school attending the government-sponsored Encounters with Canada program. Funny though, I almost feel like a high school student again as I squint my glasses against the sunshine and its rays reflect off of the metal wire of my retainer. Perhaps karma has come full circle as I had previously pitied adults who had to wear retainers. Now, the retainer gods chose to adorn me with this resin and wire contraption shortly before embarking on my trip. I think to confirm my theory that I bring heavy rains with me each time I head out east, I'll need to come back to Ontario a third time. Last year, in Toronto, the weather seemed nice until I arrived. This time, it's been pouring buckets since I got ... read more

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3... so Leanne and I, Janice, are here in Dunrobin, Ontario, for the month of may while we prep for the big trek. I think my legs have been in a semi-spaghetti state all week getting used to biking everyday! Our date of departure is May 30th to Vancouver with dear papa in tow. He will join us through the mountains until Calgary. This is a trek of a lifetime for us all, Leanne has been dreaming it up since highschool, and we greatly thank anyone who has helped us or will help us along the way. If you wish to support us financially, we would appreciate any donations be made to the Sierra Club of Canada in efforts to help canada along its path to sustainability and environmental awareness and protection. ... read more

Hey, everyone So tonight is my last night in town. Crazy. I was told the weather in Burkina is super hot right now, and I made the mistake of checking online. HOLY CRAP is it ever hot there! The weather for the next couple of days looks something like this: Today: High 43, Low 28 Fri: High 42, Low 30 Sat: High 42, Low 37 You get the idea... I think it's safe to say I'm going to spend the next year in a constant state of SWEATY. Luckily for me, I went out yesterday and bought a whole bunch of gear for the Kilimanjaro climb and just general field stuff. The new pack is FANTASTIC but the real highlight is my very stylish, very "geologist chic" field hat!!!! It's one of those wide-brimmed jobbies in ... read more

Hey, Everybody! Expect a lot of exclamation points in this message because I am REALLY EXCITED right now! It looks like my contract will be signed soon (about ruddy time!) and things with my work overseas are really starting to shape up. I got a report today about a bunch of the activities that are going on over there, and I'm looking forward to being part of them. They've just finished some public awareness campaigning (posters, movies, etc) about HIV/AIDS, and they're starting a new Malaria awareness campaign very soon. That would be a really cool community project to work with! Also, they are doing language training for the staff at the mine site (English for the locals, French for the expats) and I offered to do some teaching if they need me. I think it ... read more

Well, were finally in the home stretch so to speak. It has been a long 5 months of planning, but it seems to be well worth it. We have everything we need and the Visa bills to prove it! This last weekend at home will be spent packing, taping up the seams of our tent, going over the checklist for the 15th time, exchanging money, buying film and spending some quality time with our girls (the dogs). I'm sure we have much more to add to that short list, but I can't think of it all now.... I am very excited and a little scared for this adventure. Mike and I have never been overseas let alone to backpack all by ourselves through foreign countries. Anyone who knows us will attest to the fact that Mike ... read more

Well, all my readers should be very proud of me. I've taken the critical first steps of moving and packed some stuff! It's actually pretty scary to look at the disaster I've made of the apartment... LK is going to be unimpressed when she gets home... You'd think that packing would make the place CLEANER because you're taking stuff out of it, but really it just messes everything up because the stuff you're not packing has nowhere to go. Very dismaying indeed. ... read more

So here we are, two weeks away from my arrival in Ouagadougou. Hard to believe that the time has flown so fast. People keep asking if I'm excited, but to be honest, I'm really not excited yet! I mean, there's just too much about this trip to really comprehend and so much that I know I won't really take in until I get there. Also, I'm really far behind in my preparation (personally, no professionally) such as packing my stuff and getting my passport renewed and other housekeeping. I've had some extra time in town that I hadn't planned on, and I thought I would use it to be productive and get things done, but really I've spent most of it visiting and trying to spend time with people I know I won't get to spend ... read more
