Well, here it is. My first travel blog! I said to myself that I should start my blog once my trip was confirmed, and now that I have a departure date, I think that is all the confirmation I need. So, May 5th 2006 I will start my epic journey to an understanding of African culture, starting with Burkina Faso. I'm very excited and don't seem to be experiencing any trepidation quite yet. I'm sure that will come. :) For now, I thought I'd attach some pics from here, so I remember these faces when I get back! Just kidding... -Brownie... read more

Well we've only got one more sleep to go before taking off. Slowly things are getting finished up such as packing, eating all fresh food in the fridge, and cleaning up the house. Speaking of the fridge, if anyone wants copious amounts of potatoes you have until 8pm tonight to come over and get them. I decided to buy a bag of potatoes about 4 weeks ago and I think we've eaten 4. In case you're wondering where we're actually going, here's a general description of the trip. First we fly to Christchurch, NZ. We fly out at 11am Sunday and arrive Tuesday morning. We actually lose a day crossing the international date line. The first thing we have booked in New Zealand is the Milford Track hike on Feb 28th. Check out this website for ... read more

Things have slowed down alot since last entry in terms of craziness, and for that I'm glad to have a bit of time off to explore and do my own thing. While I love hanging out 24/7 with people, hitting bars and acting like I was back in university, I also appreciate striking off on my own, forging my own path through the urban wilderness. Maybe I'm getting old and senile. Well senile for sure. I spent two more days in Toronto before heading back to Ottawa where I'm currently typing this entry for the world to enjoy. Those last days in Toronto were of course fun filled days spending time with friends both old and new and taking lots of pictures. I shall miss the lovely people at the Canadiana Backpackers Inn and have always ... read more

Ahhh I love it when flights go nice and easy. No little kids next to me on this flight smashing me in the legs! I arrived in late and hightailed it right to the hostel. Spent the rest of the night being lazy and chatting with the 5 other guests in the common room. We also watched a vampire movie which made my night. Sure I've seen Interview With a Vampire like 300 times before and know every line since I'm a vampire junkie, but :D For some reason the girls staying there thought I was from Scotland or Ireland because of my accent. I didn't know I had that bad of an accent, and I'm Canadian! Well us maritimers are messed up anyways ;) The hostel is great as always and I even got the ... read more

Servus!

It's hard to believe that our Australian adventure has come to an end. It's sad in a way, but we're also happy not to be living out of a suitcase anymore! Nathan was excellent the whole way home - I think he's gotten so used to our nomadic lifestyle that nothing phases him anymore. The plane rides were uneventful (which is always good) and fortunately we were able to go to Nancy's house in Vancouver for our five hour layover between flights to sleep, eat and freshen up - that was definitely a lifesaver - thanks Nancy! It was also nice to catch up with her and let her know how the last part of our trip went. As for the last part of our trip, we ended up staying an extra night in Narooma - ... read more

Last day in Ottawa Walked over to Gatineau Took lots of pictures. Another cool one Went to the Museum of Civilization. Kish asked if it would be okay if she could join me for the day. I only had the Museum of Civilization on my list of things to see today. Sure, it'd be nice to have some company. So we took our time having something for breakfast and then went back to our cell to bundle up. In no time we were soon on our way and out the door. We walked through the Byward Market area and past the National Gallery where we snapped a few photos. There's this huge metal spider sculpture that just begs for its picture to be taken! We made a pit stop at a look out over the Ottawa ... read more
