Plan B, it's raining Parliament and museums My legs are all wet. As forecasted by the weather people the rains are here today. But I didn't let that stop me from going out and seeing some of the sights of Ottawa. Good thing for me most attractions in Ottawa are pretty close and are all walkable and the rains really aren't that heavy. First stop in the morning is to the Parliament Buildings and a guided tour. I had to wait about half an hour but that's okay. They had a display on "Your Parliamentarians at Work" and it explained some of the things that happen around Parliament. There was an interesting photo slide show video thing showing all of the Members of Parliament (MP) and Senators from every area. I was looking out for a ... read more

I've landed in Jail! The old jail is a hostel Haunted? I don't know. As predicted, it was a pretty ho hum evening. I was on the internet for a bit and they had a special of buy one hour, get one free so I was on there for a couple of hours which gave me a chance to make a couple of blog entries and to answer a few emails and chat online as well. Today I'm Ottawa bound. It's only about 1 3/4 hours to get to Ottawa from Montréal. So it's pretty much a commuter train and lots of people onboard. Lucky me has an empty seat beside me. Although when I first boarded there was somebody in my seat. He was supposed to be in car three, seat 23. He was in ... read more

Well, we're almost done packing! We started typing up a list of things to bring weeks ago - the two of us have been very good at packing light in the past, but we knew that with a baby the packing could get out of hand very easily! So far, we've kept to our list and have tried to minimize the baby items we're bringing. In the end, we'll have one big backpack (with our camping gear), one big roller suitcase (with our clothes, toileteries, etc.), two small day packs (with stuff for the plane), a MEC backpack (to carry Nathan in), a car seat and a stroller. Hopefully the two of us can carry all of this gear! The adventure begins...... read more

Hi again, So we are now in Ottawa which is the Capital of Canada, as far as capitals go it is so different to Canberra!!! We feel as though there is a section of the city missing - it is so quiet!!! i think the coast has more life to it than Ottawa. Don't get us wrong its nice and all but there is hardly any people wondering around, and noise its so quiet. A cool thing that ottawa has is this lock system in the canal for all the boats to use to get up and down. This was built way back before Ottawa was the capital and since the top of the canal is about 100m above the level of the river this cool little lock system was developed. We watched for at least ... read more

At long last we are back home again. We ended our road trip, right where it started, in the garage! No road was travelled twice... one big loop through five provinces and ten states. We spent our last two days driving from Madison Wisconsin to Yale Michigan and then on to Home. We got a good start out of Madison, thinking that hitting Chicago around noon would be good for traffic. I guess there is no good time to hit Chicago as there are far too many people there with cars. Between the usual congestion and the summer construction season it took awhile to get through. The I-90 goes straight through so when you're stuck in traffic, at least you've got plenty to look around at. I think next time, I'll fly though and avoid the ... read more

Ok, so, I freakin love Canada! Although... we were at a market and I needed a bank, so I asked some chalk artist where the bank was... he says in French that he doesn't speak English... so I try (in my bad French) asking where the bank was... while I was walking away he says (in English) "Stupid American" good times... good times.... read more

Day two saw us travel over 900 kms, 40 of them in the wrong direction. Once we got that sorted out we were doing much better! Stopped for coffee and driver shift change, checked the map and realized we had wandered a little further off the beaten path than we thought. A quick revisit to familiar territory and we found the right road.... a gravel, logging road nonetheless. A rough ride on that route for about 60 kms until we saw paved road again and finally more traffic. Saw eagles, a wolf, the giant goose of Wawa, a major truck fire on the Trans Canada which had us stopped on the highway for half an hour. We fared much better than some who had been there for an hour and a half before we showed up. ... read more

First 2% of driving is now behind us! We've arrived in the grand metropolis of Sudbury, safe and sound. No incidents (meaning no speeding tickets) to report. Saw our first wildlife just three hours into the trip. Had to slow down on the TransCanada to let a very slow, majestic, confused Moose find his way to the other side. (Not sure what he could find there that he did not have where he started from.) Traffic was very light, at some points it felt like we were the only ones on the road. Guess everyone else was at the cottage. Sightseeing limited to trees, rock, more trees, some open water and swamps! Saw lots of roadside advertising for the Giant Goose of Wawa. Something tells us that they are overselling it! We'll let you know. Plan ... read more

We left Vancouver via the airport bound for Toronto at 5:30am. The flight was at 7:00 but customs and security checks take time. Unfortunately we had to go the long way around again, so our flight path took us to Dallas and Chicargo before touching down in Toronto 12 hrs later. We caught the bus to our hotel and slept. Toronto is a very big city, so has it's problems with smog, traffic congestion and homeless people. We took a tour on a double decker bus over 2 days and saw plenty. We took a closer look at Casa Loma - a very opulent homestead built in 1910 by the then owner of the Hydro. As you might imagine he was very wealthy and the 96 room house is a testiment to that wealth. At the ... read more
