It's been a while since you heard from us, but cheap and affordable internet has been hard to come by. We are now in Salzburg, but must tell you about our trip to St Petersburg first. We flew from London, Heathrow direct to St Pburg with BA. A short trip, about 3.5hrs. The airport at St Pburg is a bit like landing at a country strip in the 70's, but none the less has all the functional bits required. No dramas at passport control, so off to get the bags and meet our driver. Maree is a young university graduate who studied languages and ancient history - hence an excellent tour guide. Her english is very good and her knowledge of all things Russian (and indeed greater Europe) is exceptional. We were dropped off at our ... read more

We arrived in England on June 26 for a week and then headed to Italy. The Italy chapter you have already read, so now we have to back-track a little and tell you about England. We imposed ourselves on cousin Liz Parsons for several weeks. Our first outing was to a local pub for a taste of typical English fare. It may well appeal to the English but did nothing for Craig and I. Very simple, very bland and very expensive. Our first adventure on the trains took us to Bath. This is a lovely little town where every single building is the old sandstone from the local quarry. It is beautifully maintained and we both liked it a lot. What I did not like was the rude bombing from the local pidgeons. As we walked ... read more

We left Liz's place at 4 AM for Heathrow airport by taxi. The journey took around 30min. Taxi was the only option at that hour of the morning (the train left at 230AM!). We joined the cue for checkin and this took around 2.5 hours because we had to wait for the Alitalia staff to open the checkin and then get to other flights checked before ours. We made the flight at 6:30 and arrived in Roma 3hrs later. The train from the airport to central station was straight forward - one train and one track. At Roma Termini however, there were 30 tracks and trains and alot of confusion. It took us around an hour to find someone who could help direct us to our train. We finally boarded bound for Perugia with a change ... read more

We arrived in NY NY at 1:30pm Saturday 26th June via JFK airport and had an abrupt introduction to traffic at it's worst. JFK is only 30k from Manhattan but the trip to our hotel took 3 hours!!! It was amazing and I think the only road rule is 'don't stop'! The Quality Hotel on Broadway is a misnomer - aka is there is NO quality. (Robyn don't be offended, just don't recommend it to anyone else). Two nights later we checked into the HI hostel 10 blocks North on Amsterdam Avenue. It was very clean and comfortable, just lacked a kitchen for us to prepare meals. So we ate out for every meal, mostly Sushi and fruit. Day 2, Sunday was brunch and some fine Jazz at the Blue Note restaurant and jazz bar in ... read more

We left Vancouver via the airport bound for Toronto at 5:30am. The flight was at 7:00 but customs and security checks take time. Unfortunately we had to go the long way around again, so our flight path took us to Dallas and Chicargo before touching down in Toronto 12 hrs later. We caught the bus to our hotel and slept. Toronto is a very big city, so has it's problems with smog, traffic congestion and homeless people. We took a tour on a double decker bus over 2 days and saw plenty. We took a closer look at Casa Loma - a very opulent homestead built in 1910 by the then owner of the Hydro. As you might imagine he was very wealthy and the 96 room house is a testiment to that wealth. At the ... read more

I hope everyone is well back in Aussie. Pity about the freezing conditions plaguing many parts of Tasmania. It's a real tragedy that Moira and I are missing all of that! We finally experienced some absolute scorchers here, mainly when we revisited Merritt in the interior. 35 degrees plus, we could do nothing but find some shade and consume some nice cold Smirnoffs by the cart. Jeez, this is a tough life we lead. Thats enough of making you all jealous. I hope you still continue to read about our adventures. It must be entertaining a few of you, particularly the last one re. Calgary and its famous traffic. I have been told that it is sometimes confusing when a different author bobs up so I have decided that my type will be standard like this, ... read more

Well, I did think before we left Australian shores, that our holiday wasn't going to be all beer and skittles. However I didn't think that our campervan would possibly feature in the World's Worst Driving T.V. show, or should that be called: Most Embarassing Driving Moment!! I'll now jump back a few days and resume from where we were staying in Jaspar. No peeking further down the page. Keep reading from here, otherwise you will be cursed (I've picked up a few things from the Natives!). Certainly the drive to Lake Margine from Jasper which also included Medicine Lake was spectacular. Fortunately the weather picked up and we got stunning views of huge grey slabs of rock along the highway. I just had to sit down alone on the grass overlooking Medicine Lake, mesmerised by the ... read more

We are now in rainy Jasper. Since we last wrote to you from Vancouver we have explored far and wide. We picked up our campervan on the 5th of May and I bravely headed out into the traffic - on the wrong side of the road and car of course! It was manic, 4 lanes and then 5 all going around 100k/h heading who knows where in such a hurry. We made it to the ferry terminal at Twassen about 40 minutes later - nerves completely shattered. We took the ferry to Vancouver Is, about 2 hours. We drove from the terminal to the Butchart Gardens. These were established 101 years ago and are absolutley fantastic. The best bit is the Japanese section, some of which is over 75 years. I also liked the revamped quarry. ... read more

Hope everyone is well! Well, we finally crashed on our Seattle hotel bed at 11pm after a 30 hour flight including short stopovers. We can't complain too much as there weren't too many delays, and the Pacific crossover wasn't as painful as feared. We certainly caught up with a number of recent movies missed due to all the planning for the wedding and holiday!! Though you can only handle so much in that time frame. You would have been in your element Michelle! The long haul flight got off to a bad start with our Jumbo having to divert from Melbourne to Sydney for refueling (due to upgrades to the runway and building of new terminal). Besides the added flight time, we had to disembark and undergo a second more rigorous security check at the Sydney ... read more
