Well we have just returned from a stay at the Danat Resort at Jebel Dhanna for Eid.Our arrival was not the most auspicious as we were overlooked by the check in staff initially and were not served a welcome beverage as other guests were that we observed. And then further on into our stay we had the misfortune of a couple of bad encounters with other staff members. Chelle had booked herself in for a spa treatment and when she presented myself at the spa at the appointed time she was informed that the room that they would be using for my treatment had been given over to a massage and could I please come back again later on for my treatment. She was most surprised at this as she had booked my treatment 6 hours ... read more

To day is the last day of Ramadan. Depending on which country you follow. Duabair follow Saudi Arabia while some others follow Iran. Even in Dubai there are people who believe Ramadan ends tomorrow. Eid starts tomorrow. Everyone is busy cooking and buying new clothes. We went out tonight to finished shopping and the streets are filled with prople everywhere. Men getting there hair cut and shaves. Every barber shop is filled. People buying new shoes, new clothes, presents. People just wait for the news when Eid starts and then everyone goes shopping at the same time. We started Eid with the Eid prayer at about 8:00 am. If you have ever visited a Middle Eastern country or heard the Adan called by a mu'addin. The call for Eid prayer is different than the Adan and ... read more

Ya, thats a new word Kavita came up with when she heard some noise from the backpack she was carrying up the hill two nights ago. We are still trying to place what the sound was! Went for a overnighter to Jebel Hafeet for some barbecued chicken, rough sleeping in tents and awesome morinng views. Missed tea big time though since the fire was a lil' bit on the dying side due to winds. Went star spotting, fire gazing, rock-top contemplating, fossil hunting, climbing (falling sometimes :) hey gravity works there too!) The hot springs were closed so no dip in the allegedly healing waters of Green Mubazzara. To kill time we had to hit Al Ain zoo which was a big mistake. Well maintained but almost all the animals were in a sad state. Especially ... read more

We are coming to the end of Ramadan. It has been very interesting being in a Muslim country during this time. The whole country is on a schedule. Food places, with the exception of groceries, are closed. They all begin to open around 5:50. The whole country eats dinner a the same time. We are getting ready for Eid al Fitr. THis is the end of Ramandan and last for three days. Most business are closed and everyone celebrates. Now the shops are busy with peple buying new clothes and presents for friends and family. We are very excited to spend Eid here.... read more

For those of you who are not already aware it is Ramadan at the moment. This means that all the muslims in the country are fasting ( not eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset) and that it is illegal to eat and drink in public for everyone (and that does mean everyone). However at sunset the muslims break their fast with something called Ifthar and we had the pleasure on Saturday night of attending an ifthar buffet at Bab Al Shams. It was truely wonderful. We had noticed the fantastic pools the last time that we went out to Bab Al Shams and had decided that the next time that we went that we would have to take our togs. So this time we did and we had a fantastic swim before our buffet. The ... read more

On Thursday night Chelle and J joined up with their usual partners in crime to visit a Spanish Tapas bar at Wadi city. The weather has finally cooled down enough that it is pleasant to sit outside with the mercury only reaching a balmy 36 degrees. ( who would have ever thought in a million years that we would consider 36 degrees balmy and actually verging on cool). Anyway this tapas bar was situated at the Wafi City complex as part of the Pyramids area. So Jeremy can now say that he has seen the pyramids :) We enjoyed a beautiful selection of tapas at the restaurant however the best part of the evening has to be playing with the cat that lurked around our table hoping for tidbits (needless to say that I couldn't resist). ... read more

After my Sydney- Christchurch trip I have had 5 days off!! What to do in Dubai??? Me and my friends tend to get a bit bored in Dubai as sometimes everyone is away and you never fancy doing things alone. My friend Kim had never been to the Souks before. There are many types of Souks over here….. Gold, old, spice, textile, you can also pick up fake bags here although they are hidden behind secret walls in the shops or apartments kitted up like a shops as it is very illegal to sell over here………… Souks are basically like little shops that also extend onto the street like stalls. Its just another word for shop really. I took Kim to the Old Souks which sells cushions , traditional gifts and souvenirs. We got a taxi ... read more

We are enjoying our time here. We have gotten used to the weather, somewhat. It is something that you have to feel in order to really appreciate it. :) If you turn on your shower and let the bathroom get steamy and then turn on your heater to about 90. Stand in the bathroom for a while that is what it feels like here. It is still Ramadan here so most of the city closes during the day. The malls stay open but the restraunts are closed and do not open until the evening. There is a large grocery store in the malls called CarreFour. It is French, it is like the Fred Meyers with a grocery Store. There are many Europeans and Asian people here. So there is a lot of variety in the store. ... read more
