Geo: 25.006, 55.1953After 5 weeks at home and shipping 68 boxes to Oz and also hooking up with 68 friends and associated offspring we finally leave for Oz amid many tears from me. (And in the months of this whole trip since March, 6 new people arrived in our realm so we say congrats to the parents of: Jasmine P-E, Rebecca C, Daria Ross, Alex F, Coco D & Louis A (pronounced Louie)). 7.5 hour flight to Dubai ok apart from screaming demon child who deserves an asbo (you could see people all around slowly losing it, this kid screamed for 4 straight hours!) Aer Lingus are just gone so cheapo it's shocking, 1 tv screen per section and crap earphones so sorta saw 'Ocean's 13'. Dubai time 3 hours ahead of Ireland (in summer). Grand ... read more

after a long journey from Sydney.... I was greeted by warm dusty weather and also truly warm people of dubai (actually 80% of the population is immigrants from all over the world) must say from the airport you see the construction labor work force standing in ques for their visas and job contracts... only place in the planet where you can see the merging of the cultures... I would say after doing the touristy must dos such as the desert safari and the city tour of the gold souq which is in Deaira region and a museum in Bur-dubai region.... I get down to business with some serious jewellery shopping!!! I head to the deira goldsouq which would have around 200 plus odd stores small to medium sized keeping stocks that would blind any women! I ... read more

Hello friends, family and other people with spare time. As shown by those of you who track dates, it has been quite a while since I have made a blog entry. My sincere apologies. Unfortunatly I have lost my camera right before setting out on my trip. While I am in process of buying another, I have been able to take some shots of some trips. So I hope these will start to give an idea of what life is like here. As I begin to think of how to describe this area, I am baffled as to of where to start. This being my first time over seas, where should I start? The food, ahh yes, and the drinks. The food is quite good! What is great about Dubai is that it is a very ... read more

Hi all, sorry for the long gap, but life here is a lot more fun and have certainly had a lot more work to do... but in a good way. I'm still working on the 08 budget for the Al Bustan, something which I would not even have layed eyes on in The Palace. The trust factor here is fantastic. Had a couple of mates over the other week from South Molle. Pierre & Caroline were on their way home with a stop over in Dubai so we had a great 2 days frantically roaming around Dubai & AD. A huge fan of The Burj Al Arab hotel, just another level up again from the Palace but in a different, modern way. Stunning none the less. Keep in touch all, see ya. Scott... read more

August 28, 2007 We arrived yesterday in Dubai at about 5:30 in the morning and were greeted with 38degree weather. Whew it was hot and humid. Neither Mark nor I could sleep on the plane which left Singapore at 12:30am. The plane originally left from Jakarta and they were spraying people who came from there. I have no idea with what or why, but it was strange. Mark and I had heard wonderful things about Emirates Air, and maybe we just had a bad plane but the Quantas flight was much better we thought. Anyways, we arrived at the hotel and were happy with our choice. We are staying at the Dubai Marine Resort and Spa. It is a very nice hotel, but then almost all the hotels in Dubai are really nice. It is amazing ... read more

the worst leg of my journey starts here. late night flight to Dubai, arriving 2am, and 92 degrees of hot air blowing in your face. Awake enough for my 4 hour city tour which was really just an orientation tour (pointing out things from a bus) and visits to places not allowed to enter or take photos. Finally a trip to the Gold Souk (market) where I was completely uninterested. Blah. Dubai has been called the city of the future. Glass and steel highrises tall enough to touch clouds. A place where many nationalities live together, and do business. blah blah..this place has no soul. Straight back to the airport to catch my flight to Delhi. Delhi airport is a disgusting nightmare you cannot awake from. After digging through change (euros, dollars, turkish lire, take your ... read more

Ive only been to Dubai two times, this is my most recent to the Emirates. Dubai is not for the budget conscious backpacker. I stayed at the Le Royal Meridien Dubai Hotel, which was appx. usd $200 a night. Took a taxi out to the Al Jumeirah resort and Beaches. The Al Jumeirah is an AWESOME sight, that hotel is HUGE to put it mildly (and you cannot go onto the grounds unless your either a guest or you are dressed in proper attire) guards are checking! The homes in Dubai are grand Im guessing OIL wealth. Anyway I bought a bargain first class ticket on Emirates Airlines from Kuala Lumpur to Johannesburg with a stopover in Dubai for usd $1400. I have included several pictures and if you have any questions just ask.... read more

Yes, at long last I have made it to the real desert. Well, this is actually a bit more of the tourist desert, for I actually make it to the real real desert later on. Any way, this was a nice introduction to the desert that makes all tourists feel like they're seeing the desert. What goes on here is pretty cool though, but please don't generalize and think that this is the reality out here. From what I've seen in my few trips to the real desert, the people are very nice, very humble and pleasant. This place is kind of like the Disneyland of the Middle East. All right, that being said and done, here's what we got. First we rode out a couple of hours from Dubai to get to the desert. Once ... read more

With the departure of my guests on Thursday morning and Shez still being in the UK, it's given me the opportunity to catch up on the latest crop of zombie/horror films. Shez doesn't like them, but I do, and Prakash down at "Mona Lisa Video Rentals" has always got a good stock of DVDs. At less than 40p a rental I am not too worried if the odd movie is a bit of a dud. When watching these films where people are in peril, I can't help thinking that most of the time it is their own fault that they are in the predicament in they are in, and in many cases they could have prevented a great deal of pain and emotional stress by taking a different course of action or even basic preparation. I ... read more
