My goal as with any place I visit is to make the most to capture the best overall picture given the short amount of time and (particularly in this case) the unfortunate weather conditions. It was a good start to my trip on the scheduled stop in Moffat that I'd settled on a keyring ending my quest of finding the smallest set of bagpipes and as a distinguished looking bairn of our 18-strong coach clan, half of the group followed my leader and almost boarded the coach bound for home!! It escaped my mind upon booking that the Isles of Scotland can only be reached by ferry and the colour drains from my face at the mere thought of the mode of transport that agrees with me least. A tense thirty minutes one-way from the mainland ... read more

4:50am DC woke before his alarm for 5:00am and ANTON the guide stud dog we have hates me as After my shower put my motorcycle jeans, and slumped back int his bed. It's grey gloomy dawn 7degrees C yuk, roll on Spanish sunshine. Received text from Goode 5:10am hoping all the team are awake and playing music like the dam busters theme, Neil texted him back with "Thought we were going tomorrow" it's a worry!! Then the trip starts with senior moments !! 1, Ken rides halfway to Kenilworth start location, but checking his breast pocket at the "gibbet hill" traffic lights realises he has left his wallet at home. About turn and catch up. 2, DC loads his top box dresses for the off and the bike won't start, calls goode to get him with ... read more

The map says we are in the Cornish coastal village of Veryan. The bike computer says we have biked 42.05 miles. Of course that doesn't include two ferry rides; one of them in a driving rain in an open 25-foot boat with six passengers, four bikes and the captain. And, fortunately for us, it does not distinguish between miles pedaled and miles pushed. Hubris has no place in the hills of Cornwall and any pride I had in the strength of my legs was left by the roadside hours ago. Mathew, our hostel host, snears at the idea that the hills of Scotland can hold a candle to Cornwall. We deeply hope he is right as Kathy and I have concluded the number of hills we have walked up as too many to count. There are ... read more

Friday 15thMarch Last day of work for 8 months! Was duty, so kept pretty busy – but still time for cakes for the few that were in. Its red nose day and cakes were being sold in CID – ‘fraid the chocolate muffins weren’t as good as they looked – unlucky Sarah! Weird to say goodbye, hugs all round. Both children and respective partners turned up for planned evening out, with a meal down at the Ox, Ashley Cross. Lovely to have them all there and had a lovely meal, followed by a complete surprise of a gathering of friends at the Brickies. What lovely children we have! Organised everyone to be there and had a really special evening – thanks go to everyone who made it, we really didn’t have a clue, and it was ... read more

The days are full, but mostly revolve around watching every move and gurgle she makes, and we can't say we're that busy exactly. Tom has gone shopping with a long list of stuff for Martha as well as mundane food items for us. we await his return with interest.... read more

Well, after bemoaning the lack of photos on the blog you'll be delighted to know that on looking at the full iPhoto file there are about 3500 pics! So to make life a tad less soporific I'm in the process of deleting vast swathes of seriously awful shots. Me in the tent, me and the bike, me cooking pasta and ragout for the zillionth time and a lot of other rubbish shots. I hope to post a couple of dozen exquisitely composed works of photographic art to encapsulate the glories and futilities of peddling 19800km. Don't hold your breath. It'll take a minute or two to create. Meanwhile, apart from some readjustment to single figure temperatures, wearing socks and shoes, saying 'Yes dear' to almost all Lins suggestions, getting the hang of grandfatherhood, life is continuing ... read more

I arrived via the train between Edinburgh and Aberdeen on a Sunday. For some reason my reserved seat was occupied by an obstinate woman who couldn’t seem to understand why she wasn’t allowed to sit with her family. Instead of arguing the merits of “reserved seating” I decided to find a different coach and deal with the substantially more appealing option of sitting next to someone other than this woman’s husband, daughter, and mother-in-law. After all, I was sick and in no mood to listen to a family bicker. This illustrates the importance of two critical perspectives when traveling: remain flexible; always look on the bright side. The train ride itself was pleasant enough and had some great scenery. I am very impressed with the amount of stone walls. I expected the tradition of stone walls ... read more
