September 21 Thursday Toronto Pearson Airport Gate 33 There was a moment when I thought I would have to tell Sherry this trip was cancelled ...luckily I could still walk with my wonky knee...but just barely. The drive down from Sudbury was uneventful except for the fact that I spilled the ice water which had been cooling my engorged left knee, all over the back seat of a brand new VW. No idea why that happened ...the seal on the ziplock bag seemed secure....what a birthday present ...hitting a big zero and falling apart immediately. The wonky knee must have happened when I was shutting down the summer house for winter. I did do the work of two days in one because of an unexpected delightful visit to a friends garage where all kinds of goodies ... read more

This morning we caught the Metro (light rail) into Manchester. Well, I say morning, but after sleeping in and generally being pretty slow getting ready to go out we barely made it into Manchester before noon! We were still dithering around at Kath and Albert’s when Colin and Lucy came up. They warned us that we should get going because City (Manchester City) was playing at home and supporters would be using the Metro to travel to Etihad Stadium. OK, off we went in the car to Ashton Moss where there is a big free car park near the Metro line. We purchased travel cards and boarded the next train/tram thingy along with ONE solitary City supporter. Phew, probably still a bit early for the masses to be travelling to the game. We alighted at Piccadilly ... read more

As I stood in the church aisle I was astounded at where the last year has gone to. It was this time last year that I stood in the same place and admired the quilts and the artwork that adorned the walls and the aisle . I had called in a few days earlier hoping to meet a friend . A work colleague I used to work with. Too long ago to remember . Sadly he was not around although I was told he would be in later hanging his paintings up for the exhibition . The ladies were extremely busy bring in wooden structures on which to hand their paintings . The put up a sign outside to advertise that the Wrexham Art Group and the local Quilters Association were using the church for the ... read more

This morning we packed our bags again to head back to Stalybridge. But, of course, we had sussed out another National Trust property that we could visit on the way! We headed down the A19 heading for Middlesbrough. As we drove south along the A19 we could see hills in the distance. I am 99 percent certain that the distinctive half-cone shaped one was Roseberry Topping that is near Great Ayton and was a popular childhood haunt of a young James Cook. If there had been anywhere suitable to stop, I would have had Bernie take a panorama of its Matterhorn-like profile! All too often there are fantastic views here, but nowhere to stop for a photograph. When we left South Shields this morning, we were bemused at some of Syri’s pronunciation. We noticed it yesterday ... read more

So, this morning we looked at the places of interest that we still had on our list. We could go north along the coast to Seaton Delaval Hall (NT), St Mary’s Lighthouse and Tynemouth Priory (EH) OR we could go west to Aydon Castle (EH), Cherryburn (NT) and Prudhoe Castle (EH). To avoid using the Tyne Tunnel again and having to faff around paying the toll online we decided to … Go West! The SatNav was set for Aydon Castle. Syri directed us south westerly to pick up the A1 heading north. Ooh, déjà vu, as we flew past the Angel of the North again before taking the exit onto the A69 to start heading west. We only travelled a couple of miles on the A69 before we were heading off onto the B roads again. ... read more

This blog entry was delayed not just by my COVID experience but by the sad news on our last day in London that my younger sister, Jane, died unexpectedly in Victoria. On our return to Victoria, we managed to have a few days with the family which involved a lot of sadness but also a lot of happiness as we remembered what a great person she was. But we must complete the trip, so here goes…. Brighton We have watched many English TV shows where Brighton was shown to be a famous holiday resort. We have family members who think it is a terrible place to go. So, we thought since we are in the neighbourhood, we should go and find out for ourselves. Two nights gives us one full day in town. The first afternoon ... read more

Today we tried to break a record for the most English Heritage/National Trust properties visited in one day! After we settled up for breakfast – same breakfast, third different price in three days (at least the price was going down not up!) – we packed up all of our gear and programmed the SatNav for Edlingham Castle which is administered by English Heritage. Edlingham Castle was built in about 1300 by Sir William Felton at a time when Northumberland was relatively peaceful. The best-preserved part of the castle that remains today is the solar tower that was added in 1340-50 by William’s son. With the advent of Anglo-Scottish hostilities William (junior) also strengthened the defences with a gate tower and stone curtain wall. After passing to the Hastings and Swinburne families the castle was abandoned in ... read more

Oh, no, we wet the bed! So, our teeny, tiny room has a teeny, tiny skylight window which we have been opening as wide as we can to try to let some air into our stuffy, windowless room. We had it open all night without any problem and headed down to breakfast leaving it open. While we were at breakfast, we were looking out the window at the deteriorating weather bemoaning the fact that it looked like we would be wearing our raincoats again when we headed out. We finished breakfast and I headed up to our room while Bernie stayed behind to settle up our bill. I walked into the room and straight away I could hear it … drip, drip, drip. What’s dripping? OMG, the rain is coming in the skylight window and dripping ... read more

What is it with English pillows … and showers? Actually, the pillow thing is not just English, it’s European. Everywhere that we have stayed while we have been away the pillows look lofty but, as soon as you put your head on them, they squish down to nothing. Haven’t they heard of memory foam in Europe?! So, after yet another night on a flat pillow I was looking forward to a decent shower this morning. Um, no, that was not to be. In addition to the smallest room award The Plough earns the distinction of offering the absolute WORST SHOWER OF THE HOLIDAY!! Honestly, we could have got wetter being spat on by a butterfly. And, of course, I needed to wash my hair today. Should have done it yesterday! Breakfast is not included in the ... read more
