Today we didn’t set and alarm! We had nothing in particular planned for the day and we could make our own breakfast whenever we wanted it so … no need to be woken by an alarm. Lovely! After a sleep-in and a late breakfast, we had a very lazy day. A VERY lazy day. After lunch we drove Kath and Albert over to Morrison’s (supermarket) in Dukinfield. They don’t drive over there much these days finding it easier to shop at the Tesco or the Aldi in Stalybridge. They were able to buy a few supplies that they prefer to get from Morrison’s and we purchased some ingredients to make dinner tonight. I spotted the Festival Gateaux and picked one up and placed it in the trolley. Kath and Albert couldn’t believe it, they say they ... read more

Today our cruise ship stopped at South Queensferry in Edinburgh. After getting off the ship we had to take a shuttle into Edinburgh. I booked tickets in advance to see Edinburgh Castle but somehow could not find the tickets online. So instead, Renata and I decided to walk the Royal Mile. The Royal Mile The Royal Mile is a street that runs between two significant locations (Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse). Along the Royal Mile, we 1. Took some pictures with Owls 2. Stopped by the Writers Museum, 3. Entered St. Giles Cathedral 4. Passed Tolbooth Tavern (Now a Scottish Pub. The building used to be a toll collection station, a Council Chamber, a Police Court and a Prison.) 5. Visited Bakehouse Close (the site of Alexander Malcom’s print shop and where Jamie and ... read more

Had a shocking sleep and up early 6am … Down to breakfast in the Hotel, a comprehensive spread and ate far too much (but it did see me right through to dinner !!!). Got our day packs and TUBE Map and set off … found the Underground and tried to get the hang of it … everybody so helpful here and just come up to see if you need help … you don’t have to ask !!! We got through to the station near Buckingham Palace and lined up along the gates to watch the changing of the guard lots of marching shouting and a brass band demo of James Bond tunes… the incoming troops complete with horses and music too … will have to do some research on what we were witnessing exactly ….wandered around ... read more

This morning we left the Cotswolds behind us to head north, but not before one final stop at Gloucester Cathedral. We were going to drive into Gloucester yesterday afternoon but Bernie checked their opening times before we left only to discover that much of the cathedral was going to be closed from 4.00pm. We decided that we could fit a quick visit in on our way this morning when we would be able to explore more of the the cathedral. A place of worship on or near this site dates as far back as Osric, King of the Hwicce, when he established a minster, Gloucester Abbey, in around 679. In approximately 1058 a new abbey was built and construction of the present building commenced in 1089 following a devastating fire the previous year. This marked a ... read more

Today Renata and I set out on a Best of the Highlands tour with Expedia Cruises. Beauly Priory The First stop was Beauly Priory. Beauly Priory was an interesting historical ruin and was used as a filming location for the hit TV show Outlander in which Renata and I are fans. The main character, Claire, meets the seer Maisri here. Urquhart Castle The next stop after the Priory was Urquhart Castle. Urquhart Castle is a ruined castle that sits beside Loch Ness. It was an interesting place with various hidden areas to explore. I would have liked more time exploring the castle but alas we needed to go searching for the Loch Ness monster on our cruise around Loch Ness. We were unfortunately unable to find the Loch Ness Monster. I think he was shy from ... read more

Hebridean Way Day 1 Vatersay to Barra Ferry Terminal 32km (includes lost bits and backtracking), up 798m, down 805m. Dawn drops me at the Vatersay Community Hall overlooking 2 lovely white sand beaches. First hurdle- finding start point… Got slightly waylaid by a cake box- little cupboards filled with cakes and slices and an honesty money box. Oh OK- a big fat slice of victoria sponge doesn’t weigh much… Start walking, it’s on the road to Barras main village-Castlebay, past a 1944 plane crash site. The wreck is still there. Lots of sheep. Generally good walking conditions- sunny and windy. Overcast and windy. Rainy and windy. Rainbowy and windy. Just windy. Terrain pretty flat. Approaching the first causeway was a small fishing operation and a marked change in views. 8km down and I’m on Barra- island ... read more

Today we decided that we would spend some time having a look around Cirencester. It was probably good that we had already made this decision as the weather was a bit gloomy when we woke this morning. We had to break out our umbrellas to walk into the centre of town to arrive at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist in time for the 10.30am tour. St John’s is often mistaken for a cathedral because it is a particularly large and beautiful parish church. In fact, it is one of the largest parish churches in the country, built, repaired, renovated and extended with wool money as Cirencester was renowned for its successful and lucrative wool trade. There has been a church on this site since the earliest years of the Christian era, with the ... read more

Boy, did it ever feel good to get out of our stateroom, nice as it was. Even though the day after Dianne’s visit to Newcastle was an “at sea” day, at least I got to walk around the ship, visit the library/games room and stop at the ice cream stand. I was glad to have this day to rebuild my energy. It is amazing how tiring doing nothing can be. Portland One of the things I found strange was that even though the ship often docked in a port so we didn’t have to tender to shore, we often had to get on shuttle buses to get away from the ship because these are active port areas and they don’t want people milling about. There is a free shuttle bus that takes you to The Castle ... read more

Well, I crashed into bed at about 8.30pm last night and slept just about straight through until the alarm went off at 7.25am this morning. Ah, sleep, it is a truly wondrous thing that enables the body to rest and repair itself. I felt so much better after a good night’s sleep. Apart from suffering something of a moral crisis that is. Bernie has been quite prepared to ignore the fact that he has had respiratory symptoms and just carry on regardless. This morning I am in a moral dilemma, should I go downstairs and confess to Kathleen that I have respiratory symptoms and ask her if she would prefer to put our breakfast on a tray for us to eat in our room??? I checked the UK’s COVID website. Hmn, it seems that under the ... read more
