Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Words can't describe how stupidly excited I am about this Summer. The tickets have been booked, the general route planned and my clothes are laid out in neat piles on the spare bed. I wrestled long and hard over whether to take a travel hairdryer and came to the conclusion that it was a necessity i could not do without, so in it went along with my survival bag, first aid kit and whistle. (All precautions taken as promised mum!) And yes i promise to take my aspirin and drink lots of water on the flight. The list of things I [View Full Entry]

We are off so soon and I can't wait. Yesterday we were talking about all the things that we need last time, renting a bike in Penang and zooming around the island, heading to the war museum and then up to Kek Lok Si Temple. I can't wait to do it all over again. We have most of the required stuff, off for jap enceph injections in a couple of weeks, applying for thai visas now, also have the essentials from last year, backpack, mosquito net. Does anyone know if walking sandles will be sufficient for a jungle trek? wooo [View Full Entry]

PARTY TIME!!! How's it like to celebrate your birthday many miles away from home for the FIRST time in more than thirty years? Very interesting indeed! This time my celebrations were different in many ways.. The environment, my new friends, type of food, my wonderful classmates and the fact that the party was at my tiny little flat (what a torture that was...). But it's interesting to see what people can do in such a small space when excited! Really amazing!! Some of us are like oranges. We produce only when squeezed!! I want to thank all my friends, colleagues and [View Full Entry]

(All photos are from Corynne Mulcahy! Thanks Corynne!) I've now been in Cardiff for a day, and I must say that I think I've seen everything! Of course the best part about Wales is the beautiful countryside, and I haven't made it out of the city at all... I met up with Corynne and Lindsey when they got home from the lab around 8pm last night, before that I did some shopping in the center and then sat around chatting with fellow hostellers - there are an amazing number of Americans here! Normally the only American accents you meet belong [View Full Entry]

With our four year anniversary rolling round, Ange took the forethought and organised a weekend away in Cardiff, Wales for the weekend. Our plan was to do very little - we had two days and planned to make the most of the hotel and enjoy our trip to one of Cardiff's finest restaurants. We took the bus from London to Cardiff - the trip only taking 3 hours. We arrived in the centre of town and made the trek through town out towards Cardiff Bay where our hotel was situated. With the weather clearing up for the afternoon (after showers [View Full Entry]

Cardiff Church Town House June 14, 2007 We’ve now been a few days in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Our first impressions out of the train station were that this was a gritty city full of busy, working people, certainly not the showcase and leisure destination that was Bath. Several of the male students predicted they would like it here and that they would meet people they could relate to. I have yet to hear reports on that. The new and impressive Millennium stadium, home to the Wales rugby team, dominates the downtown skyline, its large supporting arches mixing with [View Full Entry]

Since moving into our new home we’ve been much more comfortable, although we ended up moving the mattress down from the bunk on to the floor and using the bunk for storage as it was a nightmare climbing up each night. We’ve been exploring some of the local area on our weekends which inevitably means castles. Our first expedition was to Castle Coch which is a 19th century replica of a 13th century castle and looks a lot like something Mr Disney might have dreamt up. It, along with Cardiff Castle in the centre of town (which has parts of various [View Full Entry]

What a way to spend an afternoon - loving the sunshine out at Cosmestan Lakes..
Who would've thought that it could be June so quickly? I have finally found a wonderful church, called All Nations, that is totally blowing my hair back! The first time I went in there, they were celebrating what God has been doing in the church, and how he's bringing so many nations together - that despite being from many different backgrounds, cultures etc - we are all part of God's family, and so brothers and sisters in christ. They showed a DVD (not quite Matty's standard!), letting the rest of the church know a bit more about who is in [View Full Entry]
