Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Winter in Cardiff Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Heavy snowfall is unusual in Cardiff. This year it just occured twice. Bute Park has been covered by a thick blanket of snows. Submerged in this endless snow white, you will forget who you are and be busy playing snowflakes! I had a very wonderful time in Bute Park with my brother, Amith and his friend, Sankalp. Despite the camp hand gesture, pink cocktail and dodgy writing we insisted be placed on for us, I still think I look kind of manly...right..?!
Well here it is, after a good couple of years dreaming and wishing that I could get away again and see more of the world, and a few months of not so detailed planning, its now just over 3 weeks until I depart! There won't be much information in this blog, its mainly just an excuse for me to get the hang of posting blogs and adding the pictures etc, but I like the timing of this as now my fully story can be charted from before the trip right up until the (hopefully not so) bitter end! I oficially leave [View Full Entry]

K so it took me 2 weeks to write this up here... my bad. slack ass. Left work in Edinburgh on Friday morning to catch the bus down to London. 9 Hours later found myself being greeted by Travis and Michael. Travis was happy... dunno if that was down to the beers he had while we waited for my bus to come in. You never know with that boy. Went back to his house where all the boys were already. Gareth and Chris were flying home the following monday, so this would be the last time I saw them. Out of [View Full Entry]

My Class Xmas Dinner Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
This was our class Xmas dinner at a very nice restaurant at Cardiff Bay called Porta Tunisia. We had hoped all MSc students would attend but many actually managed to come out yet it was extremely cold particularly on that night. Nonetheless, we had a great time and got the opportunity to mingle, socialize and make new friends within the group! A very worthwhile experience. I certainly looked forward to such a gathering because most of us never actually meet outside the class - and there's a lot to share especially since we come from different cultural and academic backgrounds.. My 3rd weekend on the trot out of London, and I was supposed to be staying there now. But this event was pre planned a long time ago. Beth and I caught a coach to Cardiff on Thursday evening and were staying with our gracious host from home Laurence. We started our first rally day nice and early only to hit our first road block - the hire car place we had booked with wouldn't let us take a car without proof of address. Despite pleading and explaining we were from NZ they wouldn't have a bar of it so we [View Full Entry]

Go the All Blacks!!! Clean Sweep of Europe :) The trip was pretty cool. I went with my Cousin who came back from France with us. But the day didn’t exactly start off too well. I had been out the night before for a “couple” (well that was the plan) and ended up having a fairly large night. So getting up at 7am to catch a 8:15am bus was none too pleasant. The London Tube lived up to its name and once again was delayed, so we made it only just in time. Sitting on the bus as we left London [View Full Entry]

Having just recovered from our weekend away in Paris (and my first week working in months) it was time to set off to Cardiff to watch the final game of the tour - AB's v Wales. This time we (me, Lou, and Mark) drove down and the good old Tom Tom lead us straight to the doors of our hotel in Cardiff. We then grabbed a taxi into town. The city centre streets were all closes and there were rugby fans everywhere. It seems that Wales enjoys its rugby as much as we do. There was almost a carnival like [View Full Entry]
