Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Pancakes
Pancakes
The trip began on Friday night, when we were denied from the bus to Cardiff because it was full. So we flung pancakes out the window instead...
We went to Cardiff while the Wales - Scotland rugby match of the 6 Nations Cup (England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, Ireland) was being held there, and came back dirty, tired, and not wanting to leave Aber again for a while. These photos probably won't do our trip any justice, but I hope it gives a glimpse into the many things that happened between the evenings of Friday, 2/8 and Sunday, 2/10. [View Full Entry]

other thoughts: has anyone ever seen welsh in print? its quite funny. they have everything here posted in both welsh and english, sort of like in Canada, though I think they take it a little more seriously, although maybe i notice it more because it looks so foreign to me. I'll give you an example (justsomething I see around me): CARDIFF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS UNION - UNDEB MYFYRWYR PRIFYSGOL CAERDYDD. funny eh? uh, what else, theres a big castle here, but we were three minutes after the last tour and they wouldn't let us on, but we'll do it another day. The Big Story Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Those of you who’ve been keeping in touch with me over the phone already know the story of my little adventure. But for those of you who’ve neglected to call me, never fear - through the wonders of the internet, the details of the story can be yours! I should just mention before I begin that some of the themes are a little adult (or maybe just childish) but if you’re feeling prudish, you may as well read this entry another day, or after a strong drink. I thought about not including this story at all, or censoring it, but I [View Full Entry]

First Entry: We arrived in England four days ago. We've been staying in the small town of Goudhurst. When people talk about small town England, they're not just talking about the number of people in the town, they're also refering to the diminutive size of all of the towns structures. It's hilarious, ducking your head to enter someone's house, or walking past a shop whose eavestroph only reaches to your shoulder. We've just arrived in Cardiff, Wales - the South-West side of the UK. It's very beautiful, and a university town to boot, so we'll be sure to have some fun [View Full Entry]

Crazy Tim and his mate Dangerous Dave have recently moved over from NZ. Tim went to Uni with my flatmates Lisa and Andre. Anyway Tim has a car and decided it was high time for a boys trip. So on Friday after work Andre, Tim, Dave and I started off for Cardiff. We had a couple of trays of beers, some tunes and plenty of excitement. Two and a half hours later after talk of cars, rugby and other bloke things we were in Cardiff. We biffed our bags in our rooms, put on our man rags (glad rags sounds to [View Full Entry]

January Trip to Cardiff, Wales My short trip to Wales began January 13, 2008 after the Delta TransAtlantic flight, Atlanta-London. It was the start of a month in Europe with two friends from China, Dai Lejuan and Linell Davis. Dai is doing research for her Ph.D. at Cardiff University in Wales. Linell is on her long winter vacation (the Lunar New Year break) from her job as a professor in Nanjing. We have been planning this trip for about six months, when we learned that Dai would be in Europe. We are all meeting in London on January 15. Since I’m [View Full Entry]

Seasons Greetings Although rather ominous the title of this blog best represents what is going on at the moment, as this is our first winter in the UK we were a bit unprepared for the lack of sunlight and the daylight hours only lasting from 8:30am till 4pm. This sort of weather definately has an effect on peoples mood and you can see it on days when it is sunny that people are happier. The change of seasons over here is also very dramatic with all the trees losing there leaves leaving just branches. in places like the park it gives [View Full Entry]

Hello there all Well here we are again in Wales-sun is shining and the sky is clear so although cold it will be fresh and crisp and clear. We had a great time exploring England, stopped in Weymouth which was quiet, except for 'Elvis' in the pub. We walked along the waterfront - punch and judy have been put away for the winter. Then on to Falmouth through lovely scenery, stopping in Ivybridge for lunch. Lovely sea bass in the local fish and chips shop. On to Padstow for a meal in Rick Stein's restaurant - not good value for money. [View Full Entry]

With Heather appearing a bit confused about who to support
The months of September and October saw the Rugby World Cup being hosted in France (with some help from Wales and Scotland - who co-bid with France to stop England getting the hosting gig). Of course, I had to get a piece of the action! Way back in November last year I purchased tickets to the Australia v Wales game in Cardiff and quarter-finals for the winner of Australia's pool (a leap of faith at the time, because the Wallabies were not performing that well!!) Finally, September 15 rolled around, and a group of 16 Aussie mates (among many, many other [View Full Entry]
