Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

A couple of hours before kick off
Firstly, sorry about no blog entries, but we didn't hear any complaints. However, we thought a quick update after a weekend in Cardiff might be in order. We arrived in Cardiff late Friday night after a week of camping around south east England and checked into the lovely Novotel. We didn't have tickets for the game as it was sold out and they were 300 pounds on eBay, but we thought being there would be the next best thing (You can stop laughing). The Dangleberries had picked up a new member - Roy "Peter" Orbison, bringing the band up to three. [View Full Entry]

Our European Adventure  Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Well what an adventure! We're only three days into our European escapade (aka Rugby World Cup tour) and we've so far encountered a flight delay in Bangkok (a seven hour layover allowing for three hours kip at the Bangkok Airport Novotel), the great Belarusian transit visa challenge (we wrangled a 48 hour visa in less than two), cold showers at our London hotel (thankfully we weren't paying the 150GBP tariff advertised in reception) and a fairly mean hangover for some of the group - they're working on a second as we go to print. Catching up with friends and family at [View Full Entry]

Hello there all Well we have arrived in sunny Wales after a great time in Ireland. Interesting adventure - great food - bacon and cabbage, Irish Stew and too many big Irish full breakfasts! It was quite an experience, Guinness and Smithwicks for the males with cider rather refreshing as well. Rolling fields bordered by hedgerows with sheep and cows. We met family in Tullemore and had a great night in their local pub with a lot of chatty Irish folk. The Irish were friendly-got invited to spend the night with one couple! The B&Bs were all run by very capable [View Full Entry]

Kylie and I up on the Great Orme where we camped for a night watching dark fall over the city
We have been up to a fair bit over the past couple of weeks, and have travelled a fair way during that time. Last update, we were heading to the Peak District to do some hiking for two nights but not exactly what we expected. We thought when hearing the 'Peak' word that there could be at least a couple of mountains around the place but, nothing at all really. The area was still nice though and very green with rolling hills, so that made the walking nice and easy. Once again we were camping each night in a paddock, which [View Full Entry]

In Cardiff Bay
"I'm sorry ma'am but you can't get to Cardiff today. The roads are all flooded out". Shanna stared wide-eyed at the man behind the counter who had just punched up this information on his computer 'thingy'. She couldn't believe what she had just heard. Walking back to Vibert, she related the bad news. Several parts of the UK were experiencing the worst flooding ever and apparently Cardiff was one of those places. British Airways had deposited us on time from Barbados and it took just about 30 minutes to clear immigration and customs and guide ourselves thru the city-sized Gatwick Intern [View Full Entry]

Castles in Wales Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
From childhood, Jay and I have always wanted to see a real castle - not the sort where Queen Elizabeth lives - where you pay a lot of money to see silk and velvet draperies, numerous portraits of royal ancestors and a fortune in antique furniture and crystal. No! We wanted to see a stone fortress where you could really imagine the Normans raining arrows through narrow stone slits and pouring boiling oil down on the invading armies - a place where you could envision chain mail clad invaders catapulting boulders over the crenelated towers and trying to scale the rough [View Full Entry]

Me and a few friends decided to hire a car for the weekend and hit the open road. So on Thursday we found ourselves a nice Holden Vectra and took off straight after work on Friday. We wanted to go to Wales but that’s as much as we knew. We didn’t book any accommodation anywhere coz we didn’t know where we were going to end up. We knew we were heading in the right direction at least when we approached the England/Wales toll bridge and all the roadsigns turned into the Welsh language which we had a fun time trying to [View Full Entry]

Me amoungst the ruins

This will definitely be a night to remember! The following day was going to be our friend, Alex's birthday. So, she and a few other friends decided to celebrate this in a different, or rather unusual fashion. We went out clubbing (yeah me clubbing...) and also managed to visit the newly opened club in the city centre - which was rocking! The music was great, exotic interior and a very attractive environment! Later we moved to Club Philarmonic downtown. There are two dance floors in this club, and I just love the music in the basement. We hung out there until [View Full Entry]

Okay... now that's too close.

The last class dinner for Msc Marketing Class was held at Spice Route, Cardiff Bay, on 3rd August, 2007. We enjoyed the great food in Indian & Asian buffet restuarant and had a great time there. Since this was the last class gathering, we said goodbye, gave blessings, big hugs and kisses to one another. How was a touching moment! Some of the classmates have left UK for good in the next couple of days. [View Full Entry]
