Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Castling in Wales Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Wales seems to be the last place each conquering group went when they came to england- no real reason to go to wales other than to be able to say that you've got the whole island. The word Welsch litterally means 'foreigner' and this is why the welsch don't consider themselves welsch at all- they are cymru (pron. Kumree) or commrade. The pictures really do most of the explaination.. Caerleon - Roman settlement- the only thing of note is that they used a communal sponge soaked in vinegar to wipe their butts/ Caerphilly Castle- anyone who has seen braveheart actually knows [View Full Entry]

The Cardiff Business School invited all MSc and PhD students to the Post Graduate Dinner on the 15th February 2007. What a splendid and fabulous event! It was good to see classmates, lecturers and university Professors dressed up. Although the guest speaker's speech was somewhat boring and irrelevant, we got an opportunity to laugh (and him to laugh at himself) - which, I think was a lot of fun. We also managed to mingle, socialise and interact with lecturers and classmates at a social level. Certainly, that made us get to know one another better. I thoroughly enjoyed the food and [View Full Entry]

Calling all Salsero's Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Its taken 3 weeks, but finally i've discovered the salsa scene in Cardiff, and whats more, have found a friend to tag along! Lisa had never seen salsa before, but thought it sounded fun - little did she know that it was that and so much more! We found out about a Valentines Salsa party on friday, so went to check out the vibes! We had such fun pottering around lisa's little attic room getting ourselves ready - tryng very hard to convince Amy... but havent been too successful just yet! Lisa was great - and with blond hair, blue eyes [View Full Entry]

Nels, Lisa and me walking through the city park, heading towards Roath Park and lake
Having spent most of last night dancing the night - and this morning - away, we somehow managed to get to church on time.. just! However by the time it was over, the worms were calling. thank goodness for subway round the corner. So Nels, Lis and I armed ourselves with the most delicious samies in the world (except for mom's of course) and headed down to Roath Park where there's a huge lake, with swans, ducks and loads of people out making the most of the sunshine and slight increase in temperature - provided you're wearing a thick coat, beany, [View Full Entry]

This is the first time I visited Wales since Sept 2003 when I first came to England to study. And in fact, I'm going to graduate next year. So I thought, I must at least go to Wales once before I leave UK for good. Since we just finished our examination, we decided to spend our weekend at Cardiff. We started with 7 ppl who 'registered' their interest, but due to different reasons, we only left with three when we set off at 7.30 a.m on 10th Feb. Two days before we travelled, it was snowing like crazy in Wales and [View Full Entry]

SNOW!! Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Front of apartments
Front of apartments
This was the view when i walked out the apartments on thursday... exquisite!
What an amazing experience for this little south african! On wednesday night we had so much snow that only 3 of the 9 OT's were able to make it into work - and 2 of those live on the property - one being me! 31 of the surgery staff called in to say it was taking them 3 hours to get into work, so they werent bothering and were just going to go home! Friday was just the same and driving was hysterical! Bit like bumper cars - you go straight, and when trying to turn a corner, just keep going [View Full Entry]

...have to be friends!!! He has blessed me out of my socks in the way He has provided me with some incredible woman who love God, to be friends. I attended Mack Church in Cardiff on the first sunday i arrived. Its only a small church, but I was totally blown away with the hospitality, love and kindness that the people showed. A week later all the students (yip, I became a student!) were invited back to a couple's home for sunday lunch - WOW - and it was there that I met a little angel called lisa, who from the [View Full Entry]

Llandough Hospital
Llandough Hospital
Nestled on the Llandough Hill in Cardiff
After a wonderful 6 week break in sunny south africa, i returned to begin Adventure Part 2. Spent some lovely days with Johnny and Helen in Grateley, gathering my thoughts an belongings, before retrieving my bike from Chester, and heading onto Cardiff. Llandough Hospital has an awesome hand therapy department with the most fantastic opportunities to learn and grow. My colleagues are wonderful girls and together they make up a really tight and efficient team. The accomodation is nice - my flatmates tend to come and go, and at the moment am living with a psychiatrist, paediatrician, an A [View Full Entry]

According to the locals, THE thing to do in Cardiff is see Cardiff Castle. The last time I was here, the sole and soul goal was to make it to the Howell's sales. (Howell's being Cardiff's equivalent of London's Harrods.) Upon this return visit, I grew embarrassed at my unabashed consumerism and lack of want for Welsh culture. Cardiff Castle now topped my list of necessary sites of seeing. The locals I speak of are friends of Sarah's, one of who lived in Victoria, BC for a year. They have graciously opened their lush three-bedroom apartment to us for the two [View Full Entry]
