After the noise of London, Barbara's house in the country is gloriously quiet and we all slept in today. After breakfast, we pointed the GPS for Stonehenge and set off. Much of the route took us along small country roads and through some of the small villages including Sheffield, where my brother Richard went to school when he lived with Barbara and Victor. After the small roads we got on the highway and drove for some distance before rounding the top of a hill and finding ourselves facing Stonehenge, just a short distance off the highway. After parking and buying a family ticket, we picked up electronic tour guide units and took the tunnel under the road to the site. Seeing the site with your own eyes is quite impressive, though because of the size it ... read more

Last weekend I just stayed in Bangor. Friends from home came to visit others here, so we just spent time with them. I didn’t go anywhere, but I got a lot of work done on my essays and journals, so the weekend here really was worth it. During OP on Tuesday, we went sailing on the Menai Strait! It was a lot of fun and something very new to me. It was an absolutely gorgeous day but there was one problem: no wind. Wind is pretty essential to sailing, so we were stuck out in the strait without a paddle! We were actually being towed around by the motor boats more than we were sailing. But we did get a gush of wind for about 5 minutes and learned to sail, so that was fun. Sara ... read more

Day163 Taking full advantage of Carly’s recent 25th Birthday we decided to hire a small car for the trip to Bath and Stonehenge. We also picked up an additional passenger, in Kara from Ballarat that works with Carly for the trip. We set off early Saturday morning with the best weather we have had in weeks. Stonehenge, has it’s beginnings almost five thousand years ago. Some huge pieces of rock weighing more than 40 tonnes or the equivalent of 7 elephants. The stones stand around 6 meters high above the ground. Unfortunately we were not allowed to get within 50 meters of the stones. It was an awesome experience to see something that big and old. However, after this the experience of Bath was not so grand. Firstly the mighty saints got shat on by the ... read more

So I've been pretty slack about updating my blog since I've been back, mainly due to lack of travel, fatigue and just plain laziness. Windsor Castle So I started off by myself at 8am and got on a Evan Evans tour out to Windsor Castle. Going on another tour proved to be a weird experience as the people on the tour were slightly uh... more "aged" then Contiki (18-35). Basically I wasn't going to get a tour where everyone was drinking and making immature jokes..instead what I had was an "Eccentric" lady who would rave on about her husband, her dog and all the other generic crap no-one really gave a flying fuck about. When we were getting on the bus, it wouldn't be the laid back "I'll sit wherever I feel like with whoever I ... read more

This morning we left really early to make the long journey to Stonehenge. We arrived at Salisbury at about 10:40am, but it took us a while to figure out which bus to take, and where to catch it. By the time we figured it out, we had just missed a bus, so we decided to visit Salisbury Cathedral first. This cathedral is so beautiful. It only took 38 years to build, and most medieval cathedrals take at least 200 years. It also has the tallest spire in all of England. This spire is actually leaning 29 inches to one side. When they were renovating it, the spire couldn't support the extra weight they were going to add, so it started to lean. They have since reinforced it, but if you look really closely, you can kind ... read more

STONEHENGE is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire county. Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. The iconic stone monument was erected around 2300BC. The function of STONEHENGE remains unknown, it is believed that its role was that of an astronomical observatory. It is not denied the possibility of having been used by Druids for worship and to have functioned as a religious site. Despite the fact that the weather was unkind to us, I really enjoyed standing face to face with this monumental site that I had only seen and read about in books. It felt almost mystical walking the paths that go round the stones, admiring the huge rocks and listening to stories- in fact mere speculations- concerning the erection of this unmatched monument. We also enjoyed a ... read more

In the last few weeks of my England stay, I'm trying to do as many things a possible. Upon asking anyone if they wanted to go to Stonehenge, Krystel informed me that they were going in two weeks for the Summer Solstice. This sounded like a good plan, so I signed up for the trip. Meeting up after work at Shaun and Krystel's house, the tree of us, and Matt and Gill headed to the famous stones in our stylish Mercedes-Benz. With a little help from Jane, our friendly TomTom (sat nav) voice, we were on our way and cruising... until we hit road works where two out of three lanes were closed, adding an hour to our trip. But on our way again, it wasn't long before we got our first glimpse of the Stones. ... read more

This weekend we decided to hire a car and take off on a day trip with our friend Kathleen. Our first destination was the historic, Roman city of Bath. Bath is famous for its hot springs, Roman period baths, Medieval heritage and stately Georgian architecture. The drive to Bath took approximately 2 hours. We made our way to a car park and then wandered the streets and visited the Roman baths. The baths were built by the Romans about 2000 years ago and were later rediscovered by the Victorians. The baths are fueled by England's only mineral hot springs. The hot springs were sacred to the Celtic goddess Sulis, whom the Romans later identified with the goddess Minerva. After we toured the Roman baths we were given a complimentary glass of 'spa water'. We thought that ... read more

Last week was reading week at UCL. I regret to admit that I didn't do very much reading, but did enjoy not having classes. I worked a lot over the weekends and did some touring during the week, including Tate Modern, Stonehenge and Bath. I went to Tate Modern with my flatmate Martin and his friend from Brno in the Czech Republic who was visiting London for a few days. We started downstairs where there is a crack in the concrete at one end, which gets bigger and bigger and by the end of the room is a crevice that you could fit your foot into. The museum was quite interesting, although I'm not hugely into modern art, so I zipped through a little faster than my Czech companions. My favourite part was a room which ... read more
