Today we took a bunch of jumbled up trains from Portsmouth and eventually wound up in Salisbury where we caught a bus to Stonehenge. Stonehenge was very interesting and while you can't get right up to the stones you can certainly get close enough to see them quite well. I took tons of pictures and it was all very good. They have a free audio tour which came with admission and told us all kinds of neat information. Definitely worth the hassle and expense of getting here. Onwards from Salisbury back to London we went. A long, expensive, tiring process. Eventually, however, we made it back to Dan's house and sleep came quickly. ~ Dan... read more

Since we arrived in London, it has been unseasonably cold and rainy. I was exhilarating to see a blue sunny sky on the day we traveled through country roads to see the famous Stonehenge. I read about this prehistoric monument in books. I watched it on the Discovery channel. Finally, I saw the Stonehenge with my own eyes. Situated in a vast plain, Stonehenge was truly impressive! I was awed by these massive, 5000 year-old stones. Some of the largest and heaviest stones where shipped from Wales, at least 100 miles away. Who build the Stonehenge? How did they do it? Why did they build it? A burial sit? A place for worship? Regardless its original purpose, this is a place for magic and mystery, a place for imagination and a glimpse to the ancient history. ... read more

Day 11: Tues, May 8th We had to leave our wonderful B&B today. :( We were the only guests this morning, and they made us such a great breakfast. I could totally get use to this kind of living, someone else to cook for you all the time. Tim would say I already have that, hehe….We drove onwards to Bath today. We got to Bath at about noon, and I immediately liked it. It really is a charming Georgian town with a calming river running through, and cute medieval streets. First thing we headed to were, The Roman Baths. These were so fascinating and I loved it. It’s set up really well, and has some super interesting artifacts. Because the main Bath is in its original structure, it’s very easy to imagine the Romans walking around ... read more

Well, it's been a while since Ive made a blog now, and a few things have happened. My buddy justin celebrated his 21st birthday. For some reason here thats a big deal. The legal age is 18... so why the 21st is a big deal doesn't quite faze me... but none the less it was a shit fest. I met up with the guy at 8:00pm and he was already pissed. We started pub hopping, having a drink, and continuing onto the next. Got real sloppy, I have a couple pics of it. Some are of him trying to give a speech with a rose that I bought him in his hand (funny shit) guy almost fell out the window behind him. Then I have a few of his brother and some people I work ... read more

Salisbury: Water Meadows, Cathedral, Poultry Cross, but No Steak We arrive at Waterloo Station with 15 minutes to spare to grab some baguette sandwiches and withdraw yet more money from the ATM. Who can live in London? We’ve seen one show and are broke again, and even with a student concession, this London Walks trip is about to run us £42 apiece. Our guide Chris has no problems raising her voice, so I’m guaranteed not to miss anything today even though the group is 30 big. The train ride southwest to Salisbury is about 80 minutes long and the English countryside is serene and picturesque - just as it is in every movie you’ve seen set in rural England. I only looked for a few minutes at the green fields, the yellow canola plots, and the ... read more

I spent my 25th birthday wandering around Stonehenge and Salisbury. I was fully ready for the tourism that is Stonehenge, and the ropes and fees and restrictions that come along with it. So being fully prepared, I wasn't at all disappointed. I thought it was nice, and still has pretty good vibes. Like all things in England, it was a ridiculously expensive ($50 roundtrip train, $14 for a 25 minute bus ride, $14 admission to stand a good thirty feet from the megalith...) but I don't regret it. There was a cheaper bus from London to Salisbury but it left at 4 in the afternoon from London, and Stonehenge closes at 4:30. It was easy day trip from London. I took the bus from the neighborhood I'm staying in Islington to Waterloo station. It was ... read more

So the other day this lady came into the pub and wasn't sure what to ask for in 'English terms', she wanted a lager and lime (even I knew this, catching on I tell you!). So she is about to pay, takes out her wallet and I see a good ol' Ontario licence. So we get talking about where we're from. I then tell her I worked at CT on Younge and Church and she was like oh! then you know Sidney! As it turns out, I do. My world just shrunk. Then change comes at the White Hart. I shared a room with Sharon who moved out and headed for Glasgow, enjoyed a week of having the room to myself and in moved Karla. These Aussies, they just keep coming... Consider Stonehenge checked off the list of "Places to see before you die". We toured the giant tourist stones in the rain, which Im learning is not actually typical of England. The audiotour left me unsatisfied...still no answers to "Who moved these 45 tonne stones?" Why did they do it? And even more importantly, "how in the world did they get them here?" The audiotour only provided the answer of "giant rafts" and "probably for the sun god". The amazing thing is that one-third of these rocks are buried beneath the ground, and the concentric circles were probably erected hundreds of years apart from each other. We need more answers. More impressive to me than Stonehenge was the Salisbury Cathedral, voted England's second most beautiful cathedral. I havent seen the first, but Ill have to ... read more

Geo: 51.2107, -1.25208Well yeah, im really rushing these entries atm just to get stuff down. cos yeah its a race against costs here.. about $5au just to use this for an hour here.. terrible. next part of my tour yesterday was to Stonehenge. This place was everybit as intriguing as i hoped for. It was really surreal to actually be there next to the Stones, which are upto 5000 years old. The whole area surrounding Stonehenge feels ancient, and mysterious. Sucked, cos nowadays you arent allowed to go up and touch the stones of the main circle, cos apparently tourists were going there and chipping off souvenirs for themselves!!! There was an audio tour of it too which informed me more about the monument. There was a fallen stone which you were allowed to touch. its ... read more
